On paper, this looks like a good matchup fro the Yanks
Joba starting. Manny out. And they’ve pummeled Wakefield in recent years.
BTW, it looks like Sabathia is now headed for the Brewers.
This move now puts some pressure on the Cubs to do something.
I can’t imagine they will sign him to a long-term deal so the Yanks have a good a shot as anyone to land him if Cashman decides to pull the trigger. No guarantee that will happen, though.
that's game
no way the Yankees score a second run. All the red sox have to do is wait until they can push across another run.

Did I miss
A trip to the mound by the pitching coach or “The Captain” to get this Kid’s head on straight? Seriously, he’s essentially a rookie, help him out!
Memo to Joba:
PLEASE STOP BLOCKING THE PLATE.
I don’t want to see the best arm in the organization on the DL because some base runner took out your knees at home plate.
maybe that'll start another winning streak
the ump has been killing us all night

Just stumbled home from the bar
This ump has had one of the worst strike zones I have seen in forever.

Gardner just scored
did he get a hit?

Sweet
I’m really worried about him leading off regularly. He was a high walk/strike out hitter in the minors because he’d work deep in counts and take advantage of the wildness of minor league pitchers, and I’m worried that his wait for a good pitch approach won’t work in the bigs.
He’ll have to get his share of hits.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Bad baseball
You can’t throw a 3-2 breaking ball to Ellsbury with the way Pedroia is swinging. Joba shaking his catchers off on a regular basis is annoying. He’s been in the league 5 minutes, they’ve been around forever. Trust them. That was the biggest moment of the game.
Jeter can’t get doubled off second there. Arod was on deck. He’s gotta wait for that ball to go through and stop at 3rd if it did.
Jeter has to be smart enough to eat that ground ball up the middle with Lugo running, and Giambi has to get his fat ass off the bag and play first base like a goalie there. He didn’t even move. It would be nice if he removed his head from his ass and started playing well again.
Dave Robertson can’t give up an RBI double to the backup catcher.
Such an annoying team to watch this year.
"Well, that kind of puts a damper on even a Yankees win."

I agree
on Joba shaking off the catchers.
Miller actually made a good point, that the way Joba was shaking off Molina was ‘tipping’ fastball to the hitter, because he’d nod yes to pitch and again to location. He needs a second signal.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
That's the first time
the Yanks have scored a 3rd run this week.
I understand the feeling.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
He would be my choice
but I bet it’s going to be Farnsworth against the heart of the Red Sox order. And I bet Manny comes in to PH for Casey.
Waldman
says that “the team has confidence in Farnsworth”.
55,000 people in Yankee Stadium tonight, 25 of them have confidence in Farnsworth.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I've got a bad feeling
I never like Mo coming into a tie game like this. A scoreless frame and an A-Rod walkoff would be spiffy.
I think it's a great move
These aren’t hitters who have a ton of experience with Mo.
And before I can finish typing there’s a single.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Check it out
Over at Gaslamp Ball we always complain when they bring Hoffman in the game in non-save situations because we think he is worse. So we did some statistics on Hoffman and Rivera in non-save situations to see if the two best closers of all time actually ARE worse in non-save situations. Click above to see the results. Basically:
We’re pretty confident that Mariano gives up earned and unearned runs at a greater rate during non-save situations
Mariano doesn’t appear to give up home runs or strike people out at a rate that’s statistically significant
We’re pretty sure that Mariano hits people at a greater rate when he’s in the middle of a save situation
Can we be saved? Has the damage all been done?
Is it too late to reverse what we've become?

What would be more difficult
is to look at those numbers in more context.
There’s 1000 AB difference between Mo in save and non-save situations. Is the 9% rise in opponent OBP within a standard deviation? Said another way, if you gave Mo another 1000 ABs in non-save situations, would his numbers regress to the mean?
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Good Question
I guess there really isn’t a good way of doing that. I guess that’s why we qualify it with “pretty sure” or “pretty confident”. I think he says 85% confident.

the struggling lefty to pitch to Arod?

The Yanks have had many opportunities to win this game. Lots of gifts all the way around.
now they're bringing on okajima to face a-rod

Hmm
So I hear cloning is legal in certain countries…
Maybe we should be invest our draft money in that.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
You only have to clone
his arm. Then graft it onto willing volunteers. I’ll be at the front of the line.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Mo's pretty smart and the best ahtlete on the team
You might want the whole package. A great arm is worthless with a ten-cent head. Look at Farnsworth.
You think Farnsy
is a whole ten cent head? Maybe allowing for the higher city prices, but I still think he’s a 6 or 7 cent guy.

Melky hits one out and ends this. Mark it down.

I don't
pretend to like this move at all.
Molina is a very good situational hitter.
WB is not a contact hitter- he slugs mistakes. So they put him in against one of the toughest guys to hit in the league and ask him to make contact.
Great strategy.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Wait
Crazy AL rules. Do they lose the DH now if the Yankees don’t score here?

No
Only if they put Posada in the field.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
So long as the DH
stays at DH, everything else works just like a standard pinch-hit.

Chad Moeller?
Haven’t heard his name in awhile.

He's been buried on our roster
for month now because they’re not ready to commit to Posada’s balky shoulder.
I’d like to see Jorge spend the rest of the season spending time at first and DH.

yeah
you gotta love how he just battled… two strikes on him, and he does his best johnny damon impression. hopefully he can parlay this into some more hits… get that guy on base and he’s on second… love his speed.
The Jayfiss Report ...one fan's rants
that's shocking
Given how poorly they’ve played at times this season, that’s almost mind-boggling. With all that’s gone on, if a couple of guys turn it around at the plate in the second half, and they can develop at least a reliable fourth starter, playoffs is still a possibility.
by long time listener on Jul 6, 2008 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions
The only problem....
is that the Yanks will have to beat out either BOS or TB to make the postseason.
In all honesty, I’m not confident that this team can overcome either of them unless they really turn it on and start playing like the Yanks for an extended period of time.
agreed
There are a lot of “ifs” involved. Jeter, Cano, and Abreu have to hit more. Posada needs to hit for power. Matsui and Damon need to come back strong, or they need to find another outfielder. Mussina and Pettitte can’t show their age. They need a reliable fourth starter. Having said all that, if (there’s that word again) they can hang around, who knows.

Not impressed
with Boston all that much.
They are beyond horrible on the road, they have a ton of outs in their everyday lineup, their bridge to Papelbon sucks, and they are over-reliant on rookies in their starting rotation who I think/hope will soon have MLB catch up to them.
I don’t think Boston can get too much better than what they are right now, especially if Ortiz doesn’t come back at full strength.
They can be caught.
