a Sterling announcer?

What do you guys think about Sterling and Waldman?

Sterling's long pauses late in games kill me. I feel that despite him being the "voice of the Yankees", his time might have passed him by. Late in the games he seems to tire and hurts the overall play by play. He also seems to call the homeruns too early, I know that is his style but I am not big on it.

I haven't been much of a fan of Waldman and wish they would get some else. She is too much of a cheerleader for the players, don't make me mention the "OH, MY GOD, CLEMEN'S IS BACK" speech. Damn, I just mentioned it!

I think those pauses

in the ninth are Sterling not knowing what to say- normal pauses that seem worse because Waldman is out of the booth to be ready for the onfield postgame interviews.

2 of the worst

I find the whole pompous-cheerleader shtick to be tiring. I can only listen to those 2 knuckleheads for a short time before I have to flip them off. Waldman offers nothing you can’t find in the box score, and Sterling doesn’t really call the game, he manufactures drama so that his voice can be in the spotlight. Waldman also repeats herself about 1,000 times a game.

I much prefer Howie Rose and the new guy on the Mets side. But, really, anyone would be better than the 2 pompous idiots the Yanks have in the booth.

More long pauses

would be nice.
After listening to Sterling do this for the past (Can it really be?) 15 years, every game sounds the same. HIs schtick is tired.

an embarrassment

I remember once I was driving through the city on my way to Connecticut with a college friend of mine. He is a huge Phillies fan and we were listening to the Yankee game on the radio and I was SO EMBARRASSED by John Sterling and my friend kept commenting on how bad our radio guy was. When the Yankees finally won, he did his stupid “Thuh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh Yankees wiiiiiinng” thing and my friend just burst out laughing. It was a low point in my life. I always knew John Sterling sucked, but at that point two years ago, it dawned on me how much of an embarrassment he is to the Yankees. Fire Sterling and bring back Charlie Steiner!!!!!!

Long pauses ...

are great because it’s time that he’s not speaking. Personally, I always found those pauses to be kind of ill-timed—like he was having a stroke, or getting a hand-job from Suzy. But I digress.

Call me old-school, but I miss Bill White, Frank Messer and Phil.

NOW THAT YOU GET TO HEAR XM RADIO BASEBALL

You realize how good-and-bad some announcers are in the league. Noone will ever touch Vin Scully (where I live in LA as an ex-pat Yankee fan). He can call a whole game by himself with an interesting story on every player and can keep the game exciting without the funny banter with a sidekick.
John Sterling embarrasses the Yankees. If I hear one more “It is high, it is far, it is….caught” I will scream. He is out-of-touch and his anecdotes are worthless and usually have little to do with the game. They often involve a reference to some 50 year old Broadway show.
Waldman basically repeats what he says but says it 5 more times. And oh, boy, when she cracks herself up with a thought that is mildly amusing at most and can’t help but chuckle through her whole delivery it’s likes nails on the chalkboard. Unfortunately I have to listen to them because I want to know what’s going on with the game.
The blessing of XM Radio is Yankee away games are called by the home team. That’s where you hear what a Yankee game COULD be called like.
I officially BEG the Yankees to start the new stadium with a new team. You can afford to have Al Pacino and Brad Pitt call the game if you really wanted. Please just get someone to give the broadcasts a new lease on life.

Hall of Fame

This won’t be popular, but I think they are wonderful. Sterling has a unique style that might take getting used to, but it is his and it is endearing. As far as Susan goes, she is VERY knowledgeable and is a true Yankees FAN who also happens to be a capable announcer. I am happy I have had them to share the broadcasts with and enjoy their “company” in my office where I often listen to the game.

For those of us who remember:

Sterling is no match for the master:
Ya gotta be old to remember this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Foul by the length of a White Owl”
“It’s a Ballentine Blast”
“Hello there everybody”
“Joltin Joe is Back”
“Old Reliable has done it again”
“The Superchief has no hit the Red Sox and their .301 team batting average”
“Here comes that GOOOOD HITTING PITCHER, Tommy Byrne”

Waldman is a Red Sawx fan

Mondak, Waldman is actually a Red Sox fan. She’s spoken about her childhood in the Boston area and going to Fenway with her dad many, many times on the air. She’s a Yankee cheerleader out of job-security necessity, but she’s actually a Sawx fan. She still has a bit of a Boston accent, actually.

Secondly, how anyone could think Waldman is knowledgeable is beyond me. She’s consistently wrong about the facts she relays, and her opinions change based on whether or not a given situation is helping or hurting the Yankees. She adds nothing to a broadcast except a person to read live copy so Sterling can save his voice for his dramatic calls of pop flies just beyond the infield.

We should start a fire Sterling/Waldman petition.
