Bye Bye Manny

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Manny Ramirez has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-way deal that sends Jason Bay to the Red Sox:
Manny Ramirez has been traded to the Dodgers in a three-team blockbuster, pending the approval of the commissioner's office, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Brandon Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will pay all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez's contract.
The biggest Yankee-killer of the last 20 years is now off the LA and Boston is unquestionably a weaker team without him.
Jason Bay is a very good player. But he is no Manny Ramirez and never will be.
It's time for Yankee fans to rejoice and waive bye bye.
UPDATE @ 5:15 pm:
From Over the Monster:
Red Sox receive:
Jason Bay (from PIT)
Dodgers receive:
Manny Ramirez (from BOS)
Pirates receive:
Craig Hansen (from BOS)
Brandon Moss (from BOS)
Andy LaRoche (from LAD)
Bryan Morris (from LAD)
It sure looks to me like the Red Sox got absolutely fleeced in this deal.
They essentially give up Manny, Hanson, Moss and $7M for Jason Bay???
Wow.

Jiminy Cricket,
does it get any better than this? This is, without a doubt, the best trading deadline in my memory.

Looks like Boston got ...
Majorly screwed.
They give up a Hall of Fame outfielder, a outfield prospect, and a reliever, and all that they get in the deal is Jason Bay? Don’t get me wrong, Jason Bay is a great player, but he is no Manny. Even a one-for-one trade would have been skewed completely in favor of the Dogders and Pirates here, let alone Boston sending two OTHER players away as well.
Looks like the Pirates made out with the best haul of prospects and players here, though the Dodgers should roll over the rest of the weak NL West with Manny in their lineup.
This looks to be a simple “Dump Manny” trade, as Boston obviously didn’t get anywhere close to equal value back. Good riddance anyway, I won’t miss the guy.
Agreed with LateInningRelief, too. This was an excellent trading deadline for the Yanks overall.

I could not have said it any better myself:
From OverTheMonster (http://www.overthemonster.com/2008/7/31/583909/edes-manny-ramirez-deal-ha#comments):
I could be completely off the mark here, but it seems like Boston got shafted.
They way it reads now they gave up, 7 mil, Manny, Moss, and Hansen for Bay.
Bay, a guy hitting .190 agiasnt lefties this year, and hasnt been doing too well since the all star break/

Marginally....
Bay is not a great defender, but he’s probably better than Manny. But Manny knew how to play that monster better than anyone.

wow
i thought, after all the years of getting close to trading Manny but never doing it, it’d never happen.
boston gave up a helluva lot for jason bay.

Not so fast.
There is no question that this makes Boston weaker this year but I think they believe that their team is good enough to win with Bay in left field instead of Manny. Then they get Bay at $7.5 million next year leaving them over $12 million to improve elsewhere. They are unquestionably a better team in 2009 now. That said, I share everyone’s relief at never seeing Manny in a Sox uniform again.

Not sure about that
Bay is a very good player. Nobody is denying that. But Jason Bay is not – and never will be – Manny Ramirez.
He doesn’t have anywhere near that same presence in the lineup. Bay hits good pitching, but Manny hits great pitching and is unquestionably one of the best pure hitters of our generation.
You can’t replace a guy like that. He also made David Ortiz what he is today.
I don’t really buy the money argument, though because it’s not like Boston was on a budget anyways. They can spend as much money as they want regardless of what they might say about the Yankee payroll.
Boston is anything but poor or a small market, so that $12M they will save from Manny’s contract next season is irrelevant if you ask me.

front office egos
never hit a home run
but they think they are the most important guys
idiocy, but given the personalities, hard to imagine a different outcome when front office refused to pick up next year’s option in the spring
bound to wear on Manny, and lead to friction
pissed away a chance to be champs this year
take a long long time to forgive this one

I'm fascinated by this
So does RSN blame the front office more than Manny himself?
In my opinion, the Red Sox organization are as much to blame for letting Manny being Manny as much as anyone. They let him do whatever he wanted and it just got out of control.
But in this instance, all the front office wanted Manny to do is come to the park every day and play hard. It doesn’t seem like that’s asking a lot of anyone.
I get that Manny was probably pissed about the front office announcing that they weren’t going to pick up his option, but Manny could have said fine and just mash all season playing for a new contract and go somewhere else next season.
Players do that all the time, but Manny decided to be Manny and made himself look like a fool by his antics and destroyed a lot of goodwill he had with the fans.
I really am fascinated by this coming from Yankeeland, so I’d be curious to hear what RSN really thinks about the whole situation.

Manny is a good guy
sweet, fun-loving, but sensitive
the sensitive part is real, and good management would deal with it. not the same approach for all players, see Bill Parcells
he DOES work hard
and he focuses like a laser beam in the clutch; he has no fear when most very good major leaguers are self-doubting and distracted
the difference between a good team and the champs is small; you need the intangible guys
Manny was, and is, one of maybe 10 guys in the league like that. no one I would rather have up in the clutch—for past 15 years, even when he was with the Indians
Hansen is a head case; Moss is a good guy, but AAAA talent; both were expendible

Jason Bay
Don’t dis Jason Bay just yet. He still is in his prime and the Sox will probally sign him for many years to come. Also if his numbers dont look like much, hes been hitting unmotivated in a poor Pirates lineup so u could expect those stats to go up a little with an improved lineup and the motivation of the playoff race, then agian he could be affected by the changing of leagues…..
Unlike Manny, Jason does have some speed but his knee injury can also hit at any time, u nvr know.
Overall nice trade in a Yankee Fan’s perspective, and the Sox screwed themselves by giving up needed bullpen help.(Hanson)

Nobody is dissing Jason Bay
It’s that we recognize the immense greatness (as much as we hate to admit it) of Manny Ramirez.
A similar parallel will happen in a couple of years when Mariano Rivera decides to hang up his cleats and retires. I don’t care who his replacement is – he’ll never be Mariano Rivera and that will make the Yankees a bit weaker as a result.
Manny had that aura about him and scares the hell out of every AL pitcher. Mo has a very similar aura about him to opposing hitters when he jogs in from the outfield to the roars of the crowd and Metallica blasting away.
There’s also a clutch and October greatness about both Manny and Mo that few players have achieved over the last decade.
That’s why the Red Sox are a weaker team with Jason Bay as opposed to Manny Ramirez.
Listen, I loathe the Red Sox with every bone in my body and I hated Manny as well. But there’s no denying how great of a hitter he is and how much he meant to that team.

Red Sox nation is just alittle weaker now
Suddenly I no longer fear “The Nation”.
Not knocking Jason Bay (heck, I was calling for him in pinstripes), but he’s no Manny. I’m frankly shocked the Sox gave up so much to get him out the door. I guess those 5.7+ home to first times sent a clear message to Sox brass that Manny would be a cancer to the team and they had to jettison him asap.
If I could, I’d buy Manny a beer. Mike Mussina could, and should. In fact, Yankee fans around the globe should be celebrating.
Well, done you dred-locked, man-child slugger extraordinaire. YOU ARE THE MAN!
I hope you hit .390 and crack 25 homes between now and the end of the season for Mr. Torre.

Manny/Bay
I understand how Manny scares the hell outa pitchers and so on, but are u sure that u aren’t celebrating Mannys leave, for a possible greater evil?(Jason Bays arrival) I’m sorry to play Mr. Negitive here, but taking account for age and defense Jason Bay is probally better than Manny is now and will be with the Sox for years to come. Also Manny was gone after this season anyway. I still think that the trade was bad on the Sox side because they gave up so much, but my point is that Jason Bay will probally help the Sox more than Manny would, if Manny was still on the team. I’m just wondering on this im not really sure.
