Yanks Acquire Pudge

According to Buster Olney, the Yankees have acquired Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers, possibly for Kyle Farnsworth. More news as the story unfolds, I'm sure.

This isn't the 1998 version of Rodriguez, but Pudge is still a decent hitter for a catcher, though his defense and throwing have deteriorated considerably and he rarely walks. Still, if all the Yankees had to trade was Farnsworth I'd say this was a decent deal for the Bombers.

Good deal

Farnsworth has been good this season, but our entire bullpen’s been great, so losing Farnsworth to greatly upgrade our offense at the catcher’s spot sounds good to me.

I-Rod

is a better hitter than Molina.

The Farnsworth Era Ends! YES!!!

I don’t care how well he is pitching. The other night in Boston shows how what he is really made of. If we can’t count on him in a big spot, why waste the roster spot?

This

is an awesome trade. It costs the Yankees the difference in the final 2 months of their salaries (Farnsy’s 5 vs Pudge’s 13, pro-rated), which we all know is nothing to the Yanks.
Meanwhile, it improves our greatest weakness in the lineup, adding another decent righty. Maybe Giambi can play against lefties some so we can see less of Sexson.

I guarantee that we sign farnsy after the season ends

I sure hope not

They’ve got Marte to take over the 8th inning role and Melancon and Humberto Sanchez to compete for bullpen roles.

I don’t think that’s going to happen. And if it does, I’ll go find Cashman myself and punch him dead in the face.

i agree with you

although pete abe mused about the same thing today..

Give the big guy credit, he cared. He also listened to Dave Eiland and made himself better. Wouldn’t it be something if they tried to sign him back as a free agent?

sort of a ha-ha-please-god-no!!!

Re: Farnsy

Any good will Cashman has earned the last few days would be flushed right down the toilet if he decided to bring Farnsworth back.

I”m a big fan of Sweeny Murti’s blog because he always provides excellent insight on all things Yankees. He certainly nailed this one today about the Farnsworth trade:

Go figure. Just when Yankee fans begin to tolerate Kyle Farnsworth the Yanks send him packing. There are some who wonder if the Yanks gambled on breaking up what’s been an unexpected strength—the bullpen. But tell me if you really felt comfortable watching Kyle Farnsworth come into meaningful games the last two months, no matter how well he’s pitched lately. He’s still a 2-run homer away from getting booed off the mound.

Funny stuff and 100% accurate. I emphasized the word “tolerate” because I noticed he didn’t use the word “trust.” No Yankee fan ever trusted Farnsworth in a pressure-packed situation no matter how great of a stretch he was having. There’s no question about it. He’s always a straight 99 MPH away from turning a lead into a tie or loss.

I’m just shocked that Cashman was able to pull this one off. He got a very useful everyday player to fill an extremely vulnerable position for a guy nobody trusted.

good stuff..

but why does WFAN’s website look like it was created by 19-year old on his computer in his parent’s basement?
