PREGAME NOTES:

  • Brett Gardner is out of the lineup tonight against the left-hander, but Melky Cabrera and his 0-for-19 slide with horrific NL pitcher-like numbers against lefties (.196 / .296 / .293) is back in.  Sigh, that makes sense.
  • Pete Abe reports that Hideki Matsui has not responded well to physical therapy and will certainly be out until after the All-Star Break, if not longer.  He's also expected to need surgery at some point.
  • Jon Lester is a lifetime 0-0, 17.18 ERA, 3.00 WHIP in one start against the Yanks.  He is 2-2, 4.66 ERA, 1.55 WHIP in 9 starts on the road this season.
  • Andy Pettitte is a lifetime 15-6, 3.45 ERA, 1.34 WHIP in 29 games (27 starts) against the Red Sox.  He is 4-0, 1.00 ERA, 0.96 WHIP over his last 4 starts.
  • Red Sox' hitters vs. Pettitte can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Lester can be viewed here.
  • BTW, Ian Kennedy makes his return to Scranton tonight and will start against Lehigh Valley (Phillies).  He will be limited to about 90 pitches.

Wow...

Jeter gave them a gift run there. Horrible throw.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:15 PM EDT   0 recs

Ramirez

...yankee killer even with a sure DP. I don’t get it. Of all the sox I do respect the man’s work ethic tho.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 7:16 PM EDT   0 recs

That error by Jeter really sucked

It turns a scoreless game into a 2-0 game and a 12-pitch inning into a 25-pitch inning.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:20 PM EDT   0 recs

I Still

...don’t understang why he had the night off against the Rangers. Was that an injury thing? Seems like it takes him days to come back from a day off. What is that all about?

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 7:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Jeter has played every day since his quad injury in April

Girardi just decided to rest him for one night.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Perfect Bunt

situation.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 7:24 PM EDT   0 recs

I hope not

I wouldn’t do it in the 1st inning. 9th inning? Certainly.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Girardi's too

...predictable. He need’s to mix it up. Especially when you can’t count in 18 runs every night and you go 3-1 in the first real run against American league leaders.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 7:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he's mixed it up too much

and trying too hard to outsmart people. That’s one of my biggest problems with him.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Disagree

...played the percentages too much. Watch when Moose goes against Martinez again. I guarantee he’ll prove my point; unless he’s learnd from the last two burns.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 7:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's Girardi's problem

he’s plays the percentages too much.

The old adage is you don’t change anything in your lineup the night after you score 18 runs – especially when this team has had so many problems scoring runs.

But he has Melky out there tonight because he’s a switch-hitter (in name only) and benches Gardner.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Girardi did it the other day as well

when he rested Abreu, Cano, and Giambi against Oliver Perez.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

that

was a disgrace. Its not like this guy is Seattle era Randy Johnson.

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 7:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

...he plays the percentages (not a bad thing in baseball) too much. But he’s become predictable. I’m not talking lineup. I’m talking basic baseball.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 7:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I dont agree with the bunt in most situations to begin with

but down 2 in the 1st does not make any sense.

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 7:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I would

...have based on that throw and the unfortunate swing. He’s not 100%.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 7:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

??

Then he shouldnt be in the lineup. If you are going to sacrifice his at bats-in the first inning-because hes not 100% he shouldnt be playing.

Even if he scores, theyre still down one run and at least one out.

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 7:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sigh....

Unreal.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 7:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Ok, it's time for that offense

we saw last night to show up.

by bronxbound on Jul 3, 2008 7:47 PM EDT   0 recs

When

...Hank speaks, they play. He needs to take the lead. He’s got his dad’s heart.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No offense - but that's BS

Hank’s words have zero effect on this team. The players roll their eyes just like we do when he makes an ass out of himself.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Kennedy is doing so-so in Scranton

2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER 2 BB, 0 K – 48 pitches – 27 strikes, 21 balls

They are now in a rain delay.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Sabathia was

...the key this year. Mistake.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Are you saying Santana was the mistake or Sabathia?

Either way, I was against both moves. The old Steinbrenner Yankees of quick fixes and bloated payrolls has to end sooner or later.

I’m glad the transition is taking place now.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he was

referring to the failed Santana negotiations. Which I was against as well.

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 8:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Jeter is having such a horrible season

It’s actually pretty sad to watch every day.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:08 PM EDT   0 recs

Could be

...he’s insecure in this spot, but he’s hasn’t from day one utilized the hand he’s been dealt. Dumb baseball.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think

anyone knows what the hell you’re talking about.

Put the whiskey bottle down.

by matthaggs on Jul 3, 2008 8:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Watch and

..learn, as Girardi will. We will not make the playoffs this year.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

takes a lot of guts

to make that bold prediction when the team is 7.5 games out of first…

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 8:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Are you watching?

The season started this week (Before the allstar break). And we are whorfully inadequate.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Honestly

The way these boys are playing, we will be 12 games out by the break. Sucks, but true. And it’s Girardi. Period.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Exageration

to be sure, but we’ve got this series (-8.5) tonight. Tampa (-10.5), Pitsburgh”s a win (-9.5), and Toronto which in my opinion is an even match – So 10 games out by the break..

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

What does Girardi have to do with it?

It’s the players who are sucking right now.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

you mean Girardi has had nothing to do with Jeter's

horrible season? or Melky’s slump? or Hughes’ injury? or IPK’s ineffectiveness? or Kay’s annoying home run calls?

from everybody’s bitching and moaning, i thought all of that was Girardi’s fault.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 3, 2008 8:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, something like that

Girardi wasn’t my first choice to be the manager. But they hired him and he’s going to be there for awhile.

I’m trying really hard to like Girardi and always give him the benefit of the doubt. But I catch myself shaking my head a lot with some of his strategic moves and overall logic.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

dumb baseball

is not bunting 6 pitches into the first inning apparently.

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 8:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't buy that

I liked Torre but he wasn’t the reason why they won.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Neither was

...Steinbrenner.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

can you say

effective starting pitching and consistent offensive production?

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 8:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Missing the postseason could be a good thing for this team

Boston has done okay since they missed it in 2006.

But the problem with the Yanks is that they have no MLB-ready position players ready to contribute.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It is a huge problem

As well as the fact that we still can’t be sure that the young pitching will pan out the way we’d like to think it will.

by Rusty23 on Jul 3, 2008 8:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

True

But if they keep stockpiling young pitching as they have over the last few years – some of these kids will stick and contribute to this team.

The one thing that I’ll never understand is why the organization has a whole essentially neglected the draft and player development for so many years when the dynasty was built on a youthful core from the system and a strong rotation.

That neglect by The Boss himself and not hiring competant people to run the draft has really come back to bite them the last few years.

The old quick fix method of signing FAs is increasingly becoming a thing of the past.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pauly, Tino, Chuck etc

They did make some decent trades as well but you’re right, the practice of signing the “marque” free agents has largely been a failure for them (I swear it started with Giambi who could hit but not field forever causing a log jam at the DH spot). Another thing to consider is what happens to the line-up without Abreu and…gulp…never thought I’d say this…Giambi next year?

by Rusty23 on Jul 3, 2008 11:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Disagree

...They’ve won two. We haven’t won baseball schtick.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Please

spill some of that moonshine you’re swilling onto your keyboard and short it out.

reading

is FUNdamental.

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 8:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Since When

has young pitching won anyone anything? Not recently. Cashman screwed up.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 8:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Joba's doing okay

And there are several arms at the minor league level who are going to get opportunities sooner or later.

by anaconda on Jul 3, 2008 8:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A

..bottom line is, when did we win last? When did they win last? where does the curse lie now? Kennedy? Hughs? or Sabathia? It was stupid to pass that up.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 9:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

the guy pitching for the Sox today

clinched the 2007 world series.

Age: 24

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 9:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

and press had an orgy with his no hitter and cancer thing. You’re point? Nolan Ryan, Mariano Rivera, etc…

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 9:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

What

in fuck’s name are you talking about?

I don’t speak idiot, but in trying to decode your above message it’s SANTANA I think you keep talking about and not SABATHIA. SABATHIA might be traded in the next month or so, but no discussions have taken place yet. SANTANA was traded this past offseason genius. SANTANA is the player that was “passed up”, not SABATHIA. SABATHIA is still with the team he has always been on.

GO AWAY.

"Well, that kind of puts a damper on even a Yankees win."
-- Phil Rizzuto after hearing about the Pope's death

by matthaggs on Jul 3, 2008 9:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They could have

traded for him (and it is Sabathia, we could have traded for before the trade deadline), if Cashman would have been so inclined. Actually , we could have had him easily, Cleveland was willing to let him go and Cashman didn’t bite. So bite this Idiot, we lost on this one.

I promise to go away when you learn the game.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 9:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

When?

last year? When they were 1 game out of first place at the all star break?

Sounds like a perfect time to trade the Ace of the staff…

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 9:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A week

ago. Cashman cost us the playoffs.

by whollycow on Jul 3, 2008 9:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

youre probably right

Cashman let people know he was not interested in a trade for C.C. If Cashman really wanted C.C. he should have called up the NY Post and let them know hes just dying to get him.

by seanp23 on Jul 3, 2008 9:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sabathia is not available right now

So how could Cashman have traded for Sabathia when he’s not even on the market yet?

by an
