PREGAME NOTES:

  • Hard to believe, but the Yanks are a combined 13-11 against the Red Sox and Rays but only 4-6 against the Orioles.  Unreal.
  • Jason Giambi is just 10-for-53 (.189 / .362 / .377) during the month of July.
  • Nick Markakis is a ridiculous 9-for-11 (.818) lifetime against Darrell Rasner.  Yikes.
  • Daniel Cabrera is a lifetime 5-6, 4.62 ERA, 1.52 WHIP in 15 starts against the Yanks.  He is already 2-0, 2.77 ERA, 1.00 WHIP against the Yanks in 2008.
  • Darrell Rasner is a lifetime 1-3, 5.03 ERA, 1.53 WHIP in 4 starts against the Orioles.
  • Orioles' hitters vs. Rasner can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Cabrera can be viewed here.
  • According to Pete Abe, Chien-Ming Wang had his cast removed today and an X-Ray revealed that his fracture has healed.  He is set to wear a boot for a few days and he'll then be headed to Tampa to rehab in a week.

BREAKING NEWS:

Mark Teixeira has been traded to the Los Angeles Angels for 1B - Casey Kotchman and minor league LHP - Stephen Marek (AA).

Yikes.  The Angels were already the best team in the AL and they just got a little better.

Kotchman, wow

We can’t complain, but that deal is a weird one for Atlanta.

by John Amato on Jul 29, 2008 6:51 PM EDT reply actions

Yikes....

That makes the Angels even tougher than they already are for us…...let’s hope they end up proving what us and Detroit has in that the best lineup won’t always win it all.

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Teixeira

So does this mean that LAA is probably gonna sign him to a long term deal or not? I think it must since they gave up Kotchman for him but who knows. I’ve been looking forward to the day when the Yankees could sign this guy for a long time. Is that even a possibility now with Posada’s situation and the likeliness of him playing 1st for the next 3 years?

...

rough first inning. 22 pitches and Rasner upholds his first inning 9 ERA. hope he settles down.

Stranding runners on base.....

.....GODDAMNIT is gonna be the death of us this season, jesus christ man. We should take notes from a team like the Twins who are great at bringing some of those base runners in….

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

Rasner...

Looks great compared to the pitching we got the last two nights

by Pride O' Ireland on Jul 29, 2008 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey pride I am stuck at work sorry stuck with ESPN gameday

Yeah I think we were all waiting for Ponson’s implosion.

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Welcome to the party, pal!

Jeez, rough welcome to the AL for Marte, huh?

And that Orioles logo up top is seriously creepy, btw.

by mrljdavid on Jul 29, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

AL is a lil different I guess than the NL huh?

Lol at the Orioles logo comment….definitely true!

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Sad thing is....

Our offense is more than capable of coming back from 5 runs down. I wish we fought back more often then we do, that’s what’s frustrating for me.

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

I really think this is gonna be amazing for this Team

When we miss the playoff’s this year. These players think it is their divine right to go to the playoff’s year in & year out (dont get me wrong I am a diehard Yankee fan). But this should be a real wakeup call for this team in the offseason.

by MedFan on Jul 29, 2008 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree

......by no means do I think that they believe it’s their “divine right” to make the playoffs. I think they’ve gotten used to it and perhaps comfortable with it but thinking it’s their right seems like a bit much. What I hope they do learn is that having a bad first half year in and year out isn’t gonna get them into the playoffs every year. I also hope we learn that leaving all these runners on base isn’t what good baseball teams do.

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been saying all year that missing the postseason wouldn't be the end of the world

It would give them a good reason to let guys like Abreu and Giambi walk at the end of the season and make the necessary changes to the starting lineup.

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Sometimes...

it becomes necessary to take a step back before you take two steps forward.

It worked for the Red Sox in 2007 after missing the postseason in 2006.

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree too.......

....it would be a lesson learned, hard for us as fans but in the long run a good learning experience. Plus look at how much GUARANTEED money we’re gonna free up next year…..

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I get the point, but jeez...

it’s not even August yet. We’re two games out of the Wild Card. Two. Let’s not get suicidal after a small bad streak. Crap can happen – injuries, slumps, the Rays suddenly realizing that they’re still the Devil Rays of old with no pressure time experience.

by mrljdavid on Jul 29, 2008 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

No, no...that's not my point

They need to let these guys walk regardless of their finish this season. But, in all honesty, missing the postseason gives them a really good reason to make these changes.

I’m almost afraid that making the postseason again and making this team good enough to get waxed in the ALDS against gives them a reason to keep some of these aging players.

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see that.

But I still think Cash is going to clear the deck, postseaon or no.

by mrljdavid on Jul 29, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Bobby?

I know you said something about letting Abreu go in a different thread…..you really like the idea of getting rid of him huh? I feel the total opposite way…....a lot of the numbers show that Bobby is an important part of our winning but I’m not saying you’re wrong. We all love the same team so don’t ever think I’m trying to argue with ya homie!

=]

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely...

Never been a fan of Abreu. I’d like to see him walk along with Giambi, Moose, and Farnsworth.

Outside of injuries, the biggest reason for the inconsistency is the age factor in the everyday lineup.

The whole Steroid Era fallout really changed the game of baseball because of the banishment of “greenies” – which have been around since Babe Ruth was playing ball.

As a result, the game has quickly evolved into a young man’s game. Players who are 33-35 yrs old and really slowing down much quicker than they did a decade ago and the Yanks have an entire lineup with players of that age.

They need to let these guys go and let Matsui and Damon walk next season.

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate Baltimore......

.....that was the weirdest ejection I have seen in a loooooooong time!!! Wow!

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Ian Kennedy did okay tonight for Scranton...

6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K—92 pitches, 55 strikes

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

BOBBY WITH A DOUBLE....

....say what you will but it definitely isn’t the first time he’s pulled through for us when we’ve needed runs. Leads the majors in two strike hits…..I like ‘em, big fan!

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

You're exactly right.....

but lucky for us he was safe on the gamble. Like I said man, I ain’t tryin to argue homie….we’re in this together. Just a lot of numbers that support a correlation between Bobby hitting and us scoring runs both this season and last season.

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm glad Cabrera is out of the game

But he didn’t deserve to get tossed. No way was he throwing at A-Rod.

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

Aubrey Huff.......

I’ll never understand why he’s dominating our asses either…...god get this shit over with.

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Baseball Tonight?

Anyone else have a hard time watching when we lose? I usually can’t watch it….probably more because seeing and hearing Steve Phillips love every minute of us losing makes me wanna kill him. I hate him more than anyone on ESPN not that most of the other guys don’t suck Red Sox dick.

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

I've never bought into the "ESPN is anti-Yankee" argument

The fact of the matter is that ESPN is both a pro-Yankee and pro-Red Sox network.

Yankee fans just can’t stand to hear anyone criticize their team or praise the Red Sox in any way. Red Sox fans hate it when the Yanks get any praise.

Yankee fans call it NESPN while Red Sox fans call it YES Network II.

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Is it really an argument though?

Let’s face it, ESPN is in CT and so it would only make sense that the majority of the personalities are gonna be pro Red Sox. They definitely don’t hide it …..most of them that is and ESPN definitely has done more marketing/promoting of the whole “Red Sox Nation” hoopla than even the Red Sox themselves.

I dunno man…....ESPN was headquartered in Chicago I would only expect them to show some bias towards the Cubs or White Sox (probably more the Cubs).

by yanks4life on Jul 29, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

But the Yanks and Red Sox have ruled baseball for a decade

I see that as the reason why both teams are covered by far more than anyone else.

Tell a Cubs, Angels, Mets, Dodgers, or Pirates fan that ESPN is an anti-Yankee network and they’ll point and laugh at you.

by anaconda on Jul 29, 2008 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear ya but....

Some friends from college who were Cubs fans and also Mets fans definitely would say that ESPN isn’t totally anti-Yankee…......but they also used to say to me that they sure do love the Red Sox.

I remember one of my friends who was a diehard Brewers fan saying that he couldn’t believe how many more Red Sox games ESPN plays over the course of the season than any other team. Us probably being second but still ….by far more Boston games than any other.

by yanks4life on Jul 30, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

But they are also a huge ratings draw

behind the Yanks. And as much as we hate to admit it – they are 2-time champions since 2004.

by anaconda on Jul 30, 2008 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

BOBBBBBBBBY.......

That a boy Bobby…....c’mon now Alex, let’s rally!

It was to late nice job Betamit
