ESPN reporting rumor - Washburn to Yanks?

Not sure how true or details, but ESPN is reporting on the ESPN News crawl line that the Mariners are working on a deal to send the Yankees Jarrod Washburn.  No info as to who for.

Per Buster Olney:

"The Yankees continue to talk about Jarrod Washburn and they are likely to complete the deal in the next 48 hours. New York is willing to take Washburn and a lot of the $13 million-$14 million owed to the left-hander, but the deal would essentially be a salary dump, with the Mariners expected to make some sort of financial adjustment."

Also on the rumor page - Randy Winn and Benjie Molina deal(s) with the Giants in the works.  Not sure if I put any stock in this - it may just be talks, it may be serious.

Thoughts? .

I don't want Washburn for another season

I’d be okay with it if he was a FA at the end of the season. But they are guaranteeing him a spot in the rotation for next season as well.

That’s not a good idea.

Basically, a trade for Washburn means they probably won’t be bringing Moose back. Truth be told, if my choice is Moose or Washburn – I’d take Moose.

ugh, and here's an asking price - Melky and Brett Gardner!

The Mariners have reportedly asked the Yankees for Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner in a deal for Jarrod Washburn.

Apparently, they’re also not looking to be saddled with Kei Igawa’s contract. The Mariners have plenty of money, so they can hold out for an offer they like rather than simply dump Washburn’s contract. However, this is a guy who is 22-38 with a 4.55 ERA over the last three years despite working in a pitcher’s park. He wouldn’t make the $10 million he’s due next year if he were a free agent.

Cashman isn't dumb enough to do that deal

Even though neither Melky or Brett have really showed themselves to be the answer in center, giving up both of them is dumb.

Say it ain't so

Please Cashman. No. Just, no.

If you think Washburn is such a significant upgrade over Rasner or Ponson to give away talent, you’re a fool.

The only thing they should give for Washburn is Kei Igawa and maybe a washing machine or toaster. I would much rather see Kennedy called up or wait for Hughes or Wang or dare I say, Pavano, to come back from the disabled list than waste precious talent on the likes of Jarrod Washburn.

not gonna happen

There is no way this trade will happen, unless there is another player coming from Seatle that we dont know about.

Actually, Seattle is trying to force an add-on

They’re trying to demand that Jose Vidro be included as well. Which makes me even more against this idea.

Cashman

needs to read the blogs and not trade for Washburn….he’s not that much an upgrade over Rasner or Ponson, if one at all.

There are other benefits to adding Washburn

1. Let’s not forget that both IPK and Hughes are behind ‘schedule’ going into 2009 – which means the Innings issue will rear it’s head again.

2. Adding Washburn reduces the pressure to move Hughes and IPK into the rotation NOW and gives them time to work in the minors again.

3. Anyone saying Washburn is not a significant upgrade over Rasner, I offer the following:

Washburn: last 10 starts

62.1 IP / 21 ER / 35k / 23BB / 77H / 5 HR

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I get a 3.04 ERA / 1.61 WHIP in his last ten starts.

And let’s not forget, this is a guy pitching for a crap team.

Runs Allowed (not earned, total)

4 R – 2x
3 R – 1x
2 R – 5x
1 R – 2x

70% of his last 10 starts he gave up 2 runs or less

Innings

70% of his last 10 starts are 6 innings +

(this I argue plays into the current strength of the Yankees: the Bullpen, which is fast becoming one of the best shutdown pens in the AL).

Rasner: last 10 starts

53.2 IP / 35 ER / 37k / 20BB / 73H / 5 HR

5.92 ERA / 2.07 WHIP

Rasner has gone 6 Innings or longer TWICE in his last ten.

Are we seriously saying that Washburn would NOT be an upgrade over Rasner?

Last, this deal doesn’t appear likely or imminent as the sources I’ve read say that Seattle wants a top prospect in return and Cashman has said no. If this deal is money only, it’s worth doing. If it involves anyone other than Washburn, then it is not worth doing.

Washburn would certainly be an upgrade over Rasner

But I don’t want to guarantee Washburn a spot in the rotation next year. And a 1.61 WHIP over his last 10 starts is nothing to write home about. That’s pretty high.

My problem is this; Rasner can be sent down if he doesn’t pitch well. Same with guys like Hughes, Kennedy, or Aceves. That wouldn’t be the case with Washburn. If he doesn’t pitch well for one reason or another – the Yanks are stuck with him until the end of 2009.

It’s worth noting that part of the reason why the Yankee bullpen has been so good this season is because of it’s youth and flexibility. One guy can’t do the job and he got sent down and another young kid was given a shot.

For the exception of Mo, Farnsworth, and Hawkins until yesterday, this pen is comprised by a lot of youth and flexibility – any of which can be sent down at the drop of a hat.

Washburn would be better than Rasner, but I’m not sure he’d be $16M+ better (the amount left on his contract for 2008 and 2009).

Respectfully disagree

we have rotation issues for 2009 already:

1. No guarantee Pettitte will return
2. No guarantee Mussina will return
3. No guarantee CmW retains form
4. Still need a #4 starter (Ponson? Not likely.)
5. Any starter brought up from SCR/TRN is going to be innings-limited
6. IPK/Hughes are behind the curve in innings

So, for one additional year, and if the deal were ONLY money, then yes, imo it would be worth doing.

Considering that the Yankees will make a run at Sabathia:

1. Sabathia
2. Chamberlain
3. Wang
4. (Mussina if he reups)
5. (Pettitte if he reups)

I think at least one of 4/5 will not happen. So for one year we have a guy who can hold down the back end of the rotation and shuttle the Farm Boys in if needed or let them get another year.

The problem in that model is, what happens if they don’t sign Sabathia—you’ve got a hole.

As I said, though, I still don’t think this deal is happening. So it’s conjecture and conversation at this point, but always worth having with you Ana :)

Pettitte will return if his elbow feels good

He has already said that he wants to pitch in the new yard. The last couple of years, he had always resorted to the “Well, I’ll have to think it over and make that decision over the offseason and blah blah blah”).

They’ll go hard after Sabathia – whether he signs with them may be a different story.

But that would give them a rotation of Sabathia, Wang, Pettitte, Joba, and Washburn if they make that deal and that leaves Moose out of the equation.

I’d rather not bring Moose back next season either, but at this point, I’d take him over Washburn if I had my choice. We know what we’re going to get from Moose. That’s not the case with Washburn.

If Sabathia doesn’t sign, they’ll probably resign Moose for another season. And I haven’t even mentioned Hughes or Kennedy yet.

I’d rather take my chances with the kids for that #5 slot because they can be easily moved if they don’t work out or get injured.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Washburn if he was a FA at the end of 2008. But I’d rather not pencil him in the starting rotation for 2009 already because they are stuck with him and he becomes dead weight if he doesn’t pan out.
