PREGAME NOTES:

  • Yanks have won 6 straight games and 11 of 14.  They have also won 10 straight games in which they've scored first.
  • Joba Chamberlain is a lifetime 1-0, 3.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP in 4 games (one start) against the Red Sox.  He is 1-1, 2.64 ERA, 1.38 WHIP in 9 starts since his move to the rotation.
  • Josh Beckett is a lifetime 7-3, 5.75 ERA, 1.49 WHIP in 11 starts against the Yanks.  He is 5-1, 4.82 ERA, 1.16 WHIP in 7 starts at Fenway this season.
  • Red Sock hitters vs. Chamberlain can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Beckett can be viewed here.
  • Hughes to pitch Monday:  Pete Abe reports that Phil Hughes will pitch two innings for the GCL Yankees and will soon be activated from the DL and optioned.  Cashman reiterates that Hughes has been a target of trade talks by other GMs but insists he's going nowhere.

A win tonight would be especially sweet

but I’m just hoping the Yanks win tonight or tomorrow because I don’t like their chances on Sunday night with Ponson on the mound.

I’d be very surprised if Ponson doesn’t get hammered.

i know that Manny is off tonight

but i wonder what will happen when they get their regular lineup back and move Drew back behind Manny, instead of in front of him.

the ridiculous statistics that Drew is putting up can only be explained by the fact he’s been protected by Manny the last two months:

before Ortiz injury: 58 G, .287 BA, 4 HR, 22 RBI
after Ortiz injury: 42 G, .293 BA, 14 HR, 35 RBI

the batting average has been solid all along, but look at the increase in the power numbers. Drew will come back down to earth down the stretch without Manny behind him.

Too many pitches

for Joba. At this pace he will only last 6 innings.

by BillyBobisdrunk on Jul 25, 2008 7:36 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good to see Melky making Beckett work

Swung at the first pitch – again.

Dude, you don’t hit well enough to hack at the first pitch every AB.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Melky

It is so annoying he swings at the first pitch so often.

yeesh

Bullpens

if this turns to a battle of the bullpens, then I like our chances

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 7:41 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

who would've thought

we’d be saying that at the beginning of the season?

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 7:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No kidding

Girardi drives me nuts with his lineups sometimes, but he has been outstanding handling the pen.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 7:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I like Gardner taking pitches

But he needs to stop jawing at the ump when he doesn’t like the ump’s strike call.

Rookies don’t usually get the benefit of every close pitch.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 7:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what a single!

that’s the longest single you’ll ever see by someone not named ricky henderson!

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 7:45 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you see anaconda

....thats why i still like melky on this team. His bat doesn’t justify his position a lot of the time, but no other outfielder we currently have can do that.

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 7:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But Melky is still a fourth outfielder

A couple of great plays on defense doesn’t make up for his lack of offense since April.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 7:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Keep him

He’s going to be a good one too. People don’t realize that Josh Beckett landed on the DL eight times before he was traded to the Red Sox.

Hughes has the goods to be a very good pitcher for this team. I wouldn’t trade him.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 7:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was talking to friend of mine...

He pointed that fact out about Beckett?

by MedFan on Jul 25, 2008 7:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hard to say

But I wouldn’t trade Kennedy right now either. If they sign Sabathia during the offseason, then they could package him and other young arms to get a bat.

But the market is so crazy right now that I don’t know what Kennedy alone would get for anyone.

The Rockies supposedly wanted Kennedy in return for Fuentes, but the Yanks’ pen is not really a top priority for them – especially since Fuentes would only be a two-month rental anyways.

have you guys heard you just got Nady & Marte from Pittsburgh?

big Cards fan checking in here. we heard they were traded to the Yanks.

i’m also a big Yankee fan as well btw

Where did you hear that?

I can’t find that anywhere on the net. Who did we give up for them? I’d have rather had Bay than Nady, but I’m sure the price is too high for Bay.

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't believe that

The Pirates were asking for the moon Nady alone, so I seriously doubt Cashman would give up some of the Yanks’ best young talent for both.

I bet that’s a total BS rumor.

i just called Will Carroll

he said Ohly, Coke, and possibly Tabata – he’s still confirming the Tabata i guess.

he used to work with me a couple years ago.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

good evening Damn Yankees

we were just discussing the same thing on the METS blog.

seems to be the latest news. (Nady to Yanks)

"DUDE...I LOVE IT WHEN DAVID WRIGHT GETS PUMPED UP!"

by LOUtheMETandNATSfan on Jul 25, 2008 8:09 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nicely done

I don’t like Nady. Coke was only going to help them out in the pen anyways. Tabata lost a lot of value this season.

The price really came down for the Pirates.

Getting Nady might help now but that’s a sucker trade for the Yanks. Nady is overachieving this season and his production is sure to go down.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 8:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree completely

Nady is overrated. He’s going to drop back down to earth with his bat. Don’t know much about his glove though.

If the Pirates were going to trade Nady for that little, we should have thrown in more for Bay I think.

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 8:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i agree that his numbers are bloated

but they needed the OF help, especially with matsui a huge question mark.

i’ll miss ohly. tabata seemed like a head-case.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was a big fan of Ohlendorf too

But the Yanks will be okay if Sanchez and Melancon turn out to be reliable arms.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 8:14 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tabata

I thought he was a can’t miss player. Why give up on him while he is so young? For Nady? Are you fucking kidding me?

by BillyBobisdrunk on Jul 25, 2008 8:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tabata

has talent, yes – but also some serious injury and maturity issues.

i’m not sure if he’ll end up panning out.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

someone tell me what just happened

gamecast said “Giambi” and “infield single” in the same sentence.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The shift was on

and Giambi squibbed it to the right side.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 8:01 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

at least i'll get to see Tabata

out here. Bucs Triple-A affiliate is in Indy. i’m assuming that’s where he’ll go immediately, considering how crappy their farm system is.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:18 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

BTW....

Nady is a FA after this season. Marte has an option for ‘09 – which the Yanks will certainly pick up.

ESPN is reporting George Kontos is the fourth player.

My next question is….who the heck is Goerge Kontos?

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 8:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kontos

Starter at Tampa, 4-6 record 33BB, 101 Ks, 95 Hits in 94 IP, 1.33 WHIP, 4.02 ERA
In his second year of pitching.
5th round draft pick in 2007.

....i could have looked up his stats also. i was hoping if anyone here knew if he was highly touted prospect or just some schmoe

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 8:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

jeez...sorry.

But no, I have heard nothing about him….which leads me to think he is more suspect than prospect. Although his K to BB ratio is nice, he seems to give up a lot of hits, including 15 HRs.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jesus!!!!

8 friggin’ hits off Josh Beckett and one run to show for it!!! That will not win this ball game, unless Joba doesn’t tire and goes complete.

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

8 hits = 1 run

gotta put something together here.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To be an optimist

Beats 8 hits and no runs. 1-0 is slender, but it’s still a lead.

Farnsworth

Farnsworth has been showing me something lately. I’m impressed with him this last month plus. He knows he’s hated by the fanbase. He could have just pouted and not given 100%, but he’s fought and showed some stuff lately. I respect that….but overall I still am not a Farnsworth fan. He could win me over though if he keeps it up.

by nitlion007 on Jul 25, 2008 8:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he can win me over

once he protects a one-run lead in a game that actually means something.

What is Max Kellerman doing these day? I enjoyed watching him on the first year of Around the Horn (Before that show became incredibly annoying)

one more inning maybe for beckett

then perhaps they can finally manufacture a fu*king run.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i know Ortiz isn't 100%

but without Manny, this lineup drops from an A to a C. that’s how important he is.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Once again.....

Joba is getting no run support from his offense. I know they’re facing Beckett, but they need to help this kid out and find a way to push across a run or two.

Joba is going to be a stud, but he can’t be perfect every time out. He is still a rookie – even though he doesn’t pitch like it.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 9:14 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

was that intentional?

watching on gamecast, but i know that youk and joba don’t exactly like each other.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 9:17 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nope. Don't think so.

It’s nice to see the NESN broadcasters being rational about it, though.

by dzawaki on Jul 25, 2008 9:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The radio announcers, however

were yapping Joba should have been tossed.

by mrljdavid on Jul 25, 2008 10:21 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It doesn't look good

but I can’t believe Joba would be throwing at him in this situation. He’s pitching an outstanding game and he’s only up 1-0.

That would make zero sense.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 9:19 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You also don't want to wake a sleeping dog

Joba has made them look foolish all night and it wouldn’t be smart to give them any kind of spark at this point.

my gamecast is screwing me up

ESPN says that youk was hit but then didn’t have a 3rd out.
MLB says youk struck out and the inning was 1-2-3.
Yahoo! is still stuck on youk’s at bat.

i’m confused.

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jul 25, 2008 9:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Youkilis struck out

the ball didn’t hit him – it hit his bat, so it was a foul ball.

by anaconda on Jul 25, 2008 9:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The ball that Joba threw...

...hit Youk’s bat (foul ball). He later struck out in the AB.
