From the Yanks/Twins writeup 7/23

something that I thought was interesting from the AP writeup of the Yankees 5-1 win over Minnesota on Wednesday:

"Justin Christian drove in two runs with a double, and Richie Sexson had a sacrifice fly and 13 putouts and three assists at first base as the Yankees completed a 6-0, post-break homestand with sweeps of Oakland and the Twins.

Up next is a trip to Boston, with the Yankees taking their mediocre 23-23 road record into Fenway Park for three games starting Friday."

Mediocre?  Here are the road records by some of the contenders this year:

  • Tampa (19-25)
  • Boston (23-32)
  • White Sox (22-27)
  • Minnesota (21-27)
  • Cubs (21-30)

Record-wise, those are 5 of the top 9 teams in baseball.  The Angels (31-18), Phillies (27-23), and Cardinals (27-22) are the only teams in the bigs that have winning road records.  Percentage-wise the Yankees have the 2nd best road record in the American League, and tied for 4th best record away from home (with 26-26 Milwaukee) in baseball.

Mediocre?  I'm sure there are a lot of teams that would've liked to have that "mediocre" .500 record away from home this season.  Maybe the AP should check the standings a little more closely.

With road series at Texas, Minnesota, Anaheim, Baltimore, and Toronto next month, hopefully the Yankees can keep this mediocrity up and stay right in the thick of the Wild Card and AL East races.

Keep it going boys.

yeah i love

when some stinger’s opinion makes it into the wrap up… if anyone cared about your opinion dude, you’d be a columnist.

hard to find stuff to complain about after today’s game… BUT… why didn’t JoeG just start the ninth with Mo? Hawkins blew the shoutout for Moose, and Mo wound up pitching anyway. What was he saving Mo for- he hadn’t pitched since Sunday, and they have an off day tomorrow. Bringing Mo seemed like a no brainer.. oh well.. that’s all I could really complain about—except for the a-hole Mets fan sitting next to us who wouldn’t shut up.

WTF,

I’ve been saying that for four weeks…

If either Tampa or Boston were playing .500 on the road, this division race would be over. But since they aren’t (and we are)...we have a race on.

AP kind of doesn't know its baseball.

I read a couple days ago about the “visiting” Yankees beating Oakland in the Bronx. Even their photo captions are terrible; I don’t remember exactly, but I’m pretty sure that they mistook A-Rod for Jeter and Robinson for (get this) a pitcher.

"Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for U.S. Steel"

I believe that quote came from Joe E. Lewis, an actor and comedian. The media loves to bash the Yankees. I can’t stand Joe Buck, and Steve Phillips because of their complete loss of objectivity when calling or analyzing a game.

I don’t mind bashing the Yankees—so long as it’s fair and accurate (which it rarely is).

Wonder what 24-23 qualifies as?

After tonight’s win, is it still mediocre?
