PREGAME NOTES:

  • Bad news regarding Posada:  Pete Abe reports that the MRI on Posada's shoulder revealed capsule damage and it is in worse shape than earlier in the season.  Surgery is imminent and will require a 6-month rehab.  Unfortunately, the Yanks have decided to let Posada rehab the injury for two weeks and make a decision on his season - clearly risking his health for 2009.
  • Robinson Cano is 12-for-23 (.522) since the All-Star Break.
  • Yanks have won 9 straight games at home and 10 of 13 overall.
  • Glen Perkins is a lifetime 0-1, 11.25 ERA, 3.00 WHIP in one start against the Yanks.  He is 3-0, 3.52 ERA, 1.37 WHIP in 5 starts on the road this season.
  • Mike Mussina is a lifetime 21-6, 3.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP in 31 starts against the Twins.  He is 11-3, 3.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP over his last 16 starts dating back to April 23.

IT is nice to see the way this team has caught a spark.

They seem to be firing on all cylinders.

It's good to see

But it all means nothing if they lay an egg this weekend against the Red Sox.

They need to start giving Joba some run support – which they haven’t done since he’s become a starter.

It's a momentum thing

If you expect good things, you relax and good thingd happen.

If you try too hard you get squat.

I love them going into Fenway on a roll.

It would be great to knock them around this weekend, but we’re soo close it’s not an urgent requirement.

True

But momentum is only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher. That may be a cliche – but it’s absolutely true.

The pitching has to keep performing and the offense cannot fall asleep again.

I have been down on Joe G.

But I credit him with the bull pen’s solidification. He’s shown confidence in the guys and they’ve fullfilled his expectations. Nice.

I think the offense is just leveling out to expected performance. I think this was inevitable. They’ll slump again sometime but this is a very good offense, even without Matsui and Posada.

Not to pat myself on the back

But I advocated all winter that going with the young arms in the minors was the best way to fix this bullpen instead of signing over-priced journeymen vets to do the same job.

Now I certainly didn’t expect the pen to be this good, but it’s clear that going with the young guys is the way to go.

And they figure only to get better next season with guys like Sanchez and Melancon added to the mix.

I think we need to start talking about what a great job Dave Eiland

is doing.

Look at Moose, Farnsy! and the improvement in the young guys.

I think the struggles of Kennedy and Hughes will turn out to have been physical.

They think they have found something mechanical on Hawkins.

Sounds like a great job to me.

Gotta wonder if this was Hawkins' last appearance for the Yanks

Brian Bruney is expected to be activated within days.

I guess they could send down Giese – but he has far outperformed Hawkins this season and he fits the long man role a lot better.

I freaking hope so

you can’t even trust him with a 5 run lead…..

The Astros and/or Nationals would actually be stupid enough to trade for him….

This kind of leaves us without much to complain about.

other than injuries.

They’re making Cashman look good.
