PREGAME NOTES:

  • Yanks have lost 5 straight games and 9 of their last 10 when the opposing team scores first.  Perhaps there's something to Michael Kay's glass jaw theory?
  • Yanks have scored 2 runs or less a whopping 31 times this season in 92 games.  That is so unbelievably bad and quite astonishing considering the talent they have on this team and regardless of the injuries.
  • Joba Chamberlain is a lifetime 1-0, 3.86 ERA, 2.14 WHIP in 7 games (one start) against the Blue Jays.  He is 1-0, 2.57 ERA, 1.49 WHIP in 7 starts since joining the rotation.
  • Roy Halladay is a lifetime 11-5, 3.03 ERA, 1.18 WHIP 28 games (26 starts) against the Yanks.  But he is 8-2, 2.23 ERA, 0.95 WHIP in his last 14 starts against them.
  • Yanks' career numbers vs. Halladay can be viewed here.  Jays' career numbers vs. Chamberlain can be viewed here.

First AB aside....

Gardner needs to be a bit more aggressive swinging the bat. He’s not going to get the benefit of the call on close pitches with Halladay and he doesn’t issue many free passes either.

nasty stuff

That was such a nasty put-away pitch by joba!

slider

another crazy slider! that pitch is on tonight!

matt stairs

any lineup with matt stairs in the 4 hole is hurting…...if it weren’t for Halladay, I would say this game should be a near forgone conclusion

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 7:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

With this Yankee lineup sputtering

it’s never a foregone conclusion.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If they get shut out tonight....

.....I would think (hope) that it was more Halladay’s stuff than inability by the Yanks. WIth that strikeout pitch of Jorge, it looks grim for us

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ugh. Halladay is on his game

Joba better be lights out tonight because there’s no way this offense is going to do much against Halladay.

He dominates them they’re red hot, so it looks rather bleak.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Here's hoping....

...for another patented complete game loss for Halladay!

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hmmmm....tought my9 poll

First half MVP?

Wang – lights out for most of the first half, but has been injured
Arod – was out for a significant amount of time
Jeter – having a very un-jeter like year so far
Giambi – had an atrocious April

I’d probably have to say Johnny Damon or Mariano Rivera

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 7:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

right field?

would you like to see us go after a free agent to fill his spot? or would you be happy with a melky, matsui, gardner and damon combo in the outfield?

I also wouldn’t mind seeing him go, but I want Giambi back

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've never been a fan of Abreu

But I’m wondering if a guy like Jason Bay would be available in a deal to take his spot. I know Bay doesn’t have your typical RF arm – but RF is the short field at the Stadium. LF has much more ground to cover.

If the Yanks do sign Sabathia – they could dangle a few of their young arms in exchange (McCutchen, Kennedy, Horne, Marquez, Aceves, etc).

I’d like to see Giambi walk too. They need to rid themselves of these one-dimensional type players and Matsui will be the every day DH next season.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Giambi has played....

.....a good first base this year. Not a great one, but a decent one. There’s only so much a first baseman can do with Jeter’s errant throws this year. As for one-dimensional, yeah, he’s primarily a hitter, but he’s a patient hitter who works the count and makes the pitcher throw strikes. He can hit for power and he’s been developing his opposite field hitting this year to battle the shift. He’ll never hit .340 again, but he can still hit 30-40 homers a year and I think he’s such a great influence in the clubhouse and works with the rookies so well. He has a positive attitude and that kind of character should be rewarded I think. I turned on Giambi in 2003-2004, but he’s worked so hard that I am now one of his biggest fans. I’m not advocating picking up his option salary, but we can re-sign him cheap.

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The thing about Giambi, though

is that he’s playing fairly well and has stayed healthy in his contract year. He hasn’t played a full season since 2003 and we’ll see if he can do it this season.

And don’t forget, he’s going to be 38 years old. In my opinion, he’s part of the problem with his aging team – not the solution.

Who?

Who takes his place?

by Rusty23 on Jul 11, 2008 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I got faith

I think the Yanks will win…. Fingers Crossed.

by MedFan on Jul 11, 2008 7:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Does anyone else think....

....that the Yankees should go after Ben Sheets in the offseason? Sabathia just worries me with his weight.

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 8:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sheets is an even bigger health risk, IMO

He’s great when he’s healthy. But I can’t remember the last time he pitched a full season.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true....

.....I don’t have any rational defense against the very valid argument of Sheets’ health. I just like Ben Sheets an awful lot. Been a fan of his for a while. I look at Sabathia and just see David Wells waiting to happen, back problems and all.

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is 28

Lets get him for a 4 to 5 years in his prime.

by MedFan on Jul 11, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I probably wouldn't do it if I had the final call

But I think there’s a pretty good chance it happens.

And it wouldn’t be the worst strategy because they could stack the rotation with Sabathia, Wang, Pettitte, Joba, and Hughes and put themselves in a position to win almost every night.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Assuming Hughes....

....plays to his potential. I still haven’t given up completely on Ian Kennedy. I just keep remembering his performance against the Blue Jays last year and see what could be a great pitcher. He needs to get his head right though and have confidence in his stuff, which is not over-powering, but crafty. Kind of like a young Greg Maddux, but with a little less velocity.

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Kennedy too

I don’t want to give up on him. But signing Sabathia would make him and some of the other young arms expendable.

The only way we win tonight

Some needs to whack Roy with a line drive up the middle just kidding…..

by MedFan on Jul 11, 2008 8:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Roy has hit 2 people this game

Lets plunk one of there guys.

by MedFan on Jul 11, 2008 8:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Abreu

Abreu was a 20/20 for 5 years and a 30/30 guy for 2. Either his speed has declined or he just can’t read pitchers that well any more. He can still leg out an infield single, so he must not be concentrating on that part of his game any longer.

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 8:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well at least

ross olhendorf is pitching realy well at scranton. he has a shutouts through 5 innings with 7ks and he has only thrown 60 pitches

by geno227 on Jul 11, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well Geno

big difference between AAA & mlb hitter’s

by MedFan on Jul 11, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really like Ohlendorf

He’s going to be a good arm in that Yankee pen. But Girardi didn’t use him correctly and he was all over the place.

I think Ohlendorf needed some regular work and get into a rhythm again. He’s got nasty stuff.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Joba

Has a good line tonight just no run support, he didnt walk anyone I hope I dont jinx him.

by MedFan on Jul 11, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

FUCKING CANO!!!!!

gold glove my ass like Michael Kay seems to think…....he could have used some help from the outfield, but he’s just so lazy in the field

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

His defense has been great this season

But, if you can’t see the ball – you can’t see it.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that might be unfair....

...to Cano. I just plain don’t like Cano. Never have and probably never will be enamored with him.

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 9:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This crap is getting old!

Really getting tired of getting 5-7 games over .500 but then losing goddamn games we shouldn’t lose to like the Pirates and now tonight if we don’t pull something off…..

by yanks4life on Jul 11, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This one doesn't shock me at all

Halladay is a well-known Yankee killer. They haven’t figured him out for years.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If I am Joba...

I would be thanking all theses amazing hitters for all the run support they just put up.

by MedFan on Jul 11, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

LOL!

I couldn’t agree more with ya MedFan…..

by yanks4life on Jul 11, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's understandable...

...losing tonight. This is ROY HALLADAY after all and when he’s on top of his game, like tonight, you just have to tip your cap to an amazing pitcher with dominating stuff. Making Paul Maholm last night look like a pitching superstar however is inexcusable.

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

True....

You’re right….I guess it’s just overall frustration. Doc is so sick I wish he wasn’t wasting away his game in Toronto. I’d be as happy to have him in pinstripes as any other pitcher in baseball….he’s a beast!

by yanks4life on Jul 11, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tonight's action notwithstanding....

I’d take Halladay over Beckett, Santana, Sabathia, Peavy, or Kazmir.

He’s always overlooked among the elite pitchers in the game, but he’s as good as anyone.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

THANK YOU!

Can’t tell you how nice it is to hear someone else say that anaconda! I get into discussions all the time and say that exact thing, he is waaaaay overlooked, plays on a team that doesn’t give him much run support usually and still has no problems throwing a complete game anytime he gets the chance.

Also a fierce competitor….

by yanks4life on Jul 11, 2008 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ESPN does overlook him

Beckett’s postseason track record might put him over Halladay, but he’s definitely better than those others, especially the overrated Peavy. Peavy is a dream fantasy pitcher (he’s on my team!), but I can’t remember him NOT choking in a big game. The World Baseball Classic, those 2 postseasons, and the playoff game against Colorado last year.

Uggggh

Makes me literally sick to my stomach thinking that we don’t play better after the break….god what a shitty summer!

by yanks4life on Jul 11, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this game is looking to be...

...less than two and a half hours long. The 1940’s called. They want their games back!

by nitlion007 on Jul 11, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So far...

...I like his speed and his fight at the plate. Always hard with guys that come up but looking at it with that in mind I honestly think he could be decent. If not for us….for trade bait somewhere down the line.

by yanks4life on Jul 11, 2008 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right now....

I’d take Gardner over Melky. But I don’t think both should be starting in the same outfield. They don’t have a choice now with the injuries.

by anaconda on Jul 11, 2008 9:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I can't believe how beat up we are.....

...and I’m not using it as an excuse but Hank was right when he said it plays a factor.

by yanks4life on Jul 11, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mr Halladay is very accurate !!!

and Mr Abreau is becoming the next Mr Baylor, getting hit by a pitch for many at bats.I don’t really like Yankees, but I like the Maple Leafs less, especially funny hats.Mets shoud trade somebody for Hallady…..soon !!!!!
