lookin forward to "listening to the game"

Even though I’m a METS Fan and I’m in dangerous territory, I’d be lieing if I said I wasn’t interested in this contest. Unfortunately I’m at work and I can’t watch it on MLB.com. But at least I can listen to the game. Should be interesting.

Good luck Joba! How can anyone not like this guy? (Dang, thought I would be the first post!)

What’s up “bronxbound”?

oh yeah...cold hamstring

not good conditions for pedro pitching tonight…low 50’s. hopefully he’s getting some good conditioning/stretching/hydration from the trainer(s)...

this will be my first time listening to a yankees broadcast. i’ve heard all of the jokes about suzan. does she know her stuff?

thanks for the well wishes…’as well’

Obviously, I’m as excited as anybody about tonight but Girardi did Joba no favors by having him matched up against Halladay.

Lots and lots of pressure to put on this kid.

How many non-fastball, non-slider pitches you all think we’ll see in 65 pitches? 6?

Checkin in

I was really looking forward to this game. Listened to most of it on the radio and got home just as Joba was getting yanked. From what I’m hearing/reading people have been pretty impressed with his first outing. What’s the consensus here?

by FrankD on Jun 3, 2008 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

His command wasn't great

but he did have a few strikeouts and threw hard and gave up just one hit – a seeing eye single.

Both were cheap runs scored against him. Walk, balk, passed ball, ground out.

by anaconda on Jun 3, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d attribute the balk to nerves.

He Was High

...in the strike zone in the first inning. He was lucky to get away with 1 in the first. He threw forty + pitches. He’ll come around. But I wish he didn’t have to. He’s a late reliever not a starter.

You’ve made that determination after one start? Tough crowd.

His minor league numbers last season would beg to differ.

Your Response

...bears the key word – Minors. He throws too hard to be a starter. Man he throws hard.

Yep

Cause Beckett, Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, etc etc definitely would have been more useful as 8th inning relievers…

by jscape2000 on Jun 3, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Throws too hard to be a starter?

Never heard that one. Most relievers don’t have 3 plus pitches with a 4th pitch coming along.

They didn’t draft him and pay that big bonus to be a reliever. They drafted him to be a starter. He was one of the top 5 talents in the 2006 draft but slid down to the Yanks because of health issues.

by anaconda on Jun 3, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe I'm

..wrong about it though. With proven entities like Girardi and the Steinbrenner kids making the call, I’m probably wrong. But the again, we’re one game below .500 in June.

And this time last year

We were 4 or 5 games under .500

Different Team

...last year. I do not see a cohesive team this year. Given the aging team, the lack of a consistent catcher, and an obvious management unit that’s trying to find itself, you’re kidding youself if you expect the same result. I’d love to see it, but this team has entered rebuild mode.

by whollycow on Jun 3, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Not rebuild mode – transition mode. Big difference.

They wouldn’t have signed A-Rod, Mo, or Posada to big money deals if they were rebuilding. They are implementing more kids because it’s an aging team.

It’s something they have to do because what they have done the last several years obviously wasn’t working.

And they are getting back their starting catcher on Thursday. Not many teams can overcome losing their starting catcher for over a month.

by anaconda on Jun 3, 2008 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Symantics

You cannot win it all without a pitching. And Posada’s aging too. Do you really expect him to catch Chamberlain? I hope you’re right, I don’t see it. Pitching will once again take us out. I hate it, but it is reality.

by whollycow on Jun 3, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

and I’m just grasping at straws here, but maybe the idea is to have Joba be one of those pitchers “who take [people] out.” You say symantics, I say semantics

Hell

...you never know, maybe Kennedy, or Hughes will come off the DL with a bionic arm. I still think they both have ability; they were just thrust in it too early. I’m reaching here.

I don't get what your argument is here

Are you suggesting this is a game Joba in the pen would have made a difference? Not hardly.

You are really grasping at straws here. Joba never appeared in games when they were down – and they had been down since the 4th inning.

That argument is moot.

by anaconda on Jun 4, 2008 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Hardly

Everyone is moved up a spot in this crap pen. This is what I’ve been saying all along. Taking one guy out (especially a dominant one) alters the entire configuration of the pen and how they’re used.

Farnsworth is now the #2 guy. Let’s assume for a second Farnsworth was still on a roll. Now, instead of being able to use him as early as the 6th inning and in games they’re losing (when Joba was available for 2), Girardi has to wait until the 8th inning in the hopes they tie the game or go ahead. I don’t like Farnsworth, but he has a better chance to get people out than Hawkins and Veras do, especially if the pressure is minimized by being earlier in the game and having a safety net in Joba behind him.

People like Jose Veras, Ramirez, Hawkins and Ohlendorf are being called upon to record outs that (unless there was no alternative) they likely never would have been called upon to get had Joba still been out there.

It’s a simple argument really. The Joba move has ripple effects on the entire pitching staff, and until he can neutralize those effects by becoming an effective starter (fingers crossed), the Yankees stand a better chance to lose games that they might have won. It has already happened a couple of times.

by matthaggs on Jun 4, 2008 8:51 AM EDT up reply actions

And

instead of maybe only seeing one of Veras, Ramirez, Hawkins, Ohlendorf et al in a close game, now we usually have to see at least two of them, and that decreases the Yankees chances of preventing runs to score.

"Well, that kind of puts a damper on even a Yankees win."
-- Phil Rizzuto after hearing about the Pope's death

by matthaggs on Jun 4, 2008 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

The Pen

Now I’ve always respected your opinion, but no offense, you’re not exactly Nostradamus for predicting that the pen would suffer as a result of Joba’s switch. Everyone already knew that was going to happen.

And I agree that the front office botched this transition because they didn’t have a good backup plan or replacement for Joba’s vacated slot. But I was in favor of this switch from the get-go regardless of it’s consequences because I’ve always been a big picture guy on this issue.

That said, I do think there are going to be reinforcements on the way soon enough. I’m not sure what to think of David Robertson with Scranton because his walk totals are too high and the last thing this team needs right now is a guy who has a hard time finding the zone.

However, I do think Mark Melancon is going to get promoted to Scranton very soon, perhaps within the next week or so, and could be in the Yankee pen by the All-Star Break. The same can be said for J.B. Cox.

I didn’t realize this until I looked at his stats last night – but Melancon has already logged 40 IP this season and they will have him scheduled to pitch tonight or tomorrow. He’s been logging 3 and 4 inning stints his last few appearances.

Obviously, that’s a lot for a reliever but it’s by design to build up his arm strength. I can’t imagine they will let him log too many more innings at the minor league level because the big club needs help and 70 – 80 IP for the season is a lot to ask out of a reliever.

So Melancon may only have 30 or 40 innings left in his arm this season and I would imagine the organization will want him to throw a large percentage of them at the major league level.

by anaconda on Jun 4, 2008 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

But

a lot of smart people like yourself are still saying things like, “even if Joba was in the pen it wouldn’t have mattered last night, or the other night in Minnesota, or the night in Baltimore.”

But it does matter, it clearly matters, for the reasons stated above.

I hope as much as you do that Melancon and Cox can stabilize the pen, but there are games being played in the mean time, and the Yankees deficit is rising.

Missing the playoffs could potentially have dire consequences, even if Hank is half as powerful as he thinks he is.

The big picture you speak of could get ripped up and flushed down the toilet if the Yanks don’t perform this year. Hank will want to make a big splash in the new stadium.

"Well, that kind of puts a damper on even a Yankees win."
-- Phil Rizzuto after hearing about the Pope's death

by matthaggs on Jun 4, 2008 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I can see that logic

But Hank is not the only guy who runs the team. Hal has just as much power and he knew all the risks involved with going ahead with the Joba plan as well as Kennedy and Hughes starting the season in the rotation.

He signed on with this approach and backed Cashman 100% with the non-trade of Santana as well as these other moves.

This is my own speculation but I think Cashman and the Steinbrenners have somewhat of a verbal agreement or handshake deal but won’t make everything official until the season is over. I have zero evidence to back this up – just my gut feeling.

I think the front office knew this was going to be a year of transition with all of the youngsters and knew the organization could no longer stick a Band-Aid on their broken leg to fix the problem as they have done repeatedly since 2001.

by anaconda on Jun 4, 2008 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

moot at this point

but this guys strike zone has got some moves.
