PREGAME NOTES:

  • As Amato noted earlier, David Robertson has been promoted to the Bronx.  His minor league numbers have always been outstanding and his strikeout totals are impressive.
  • To make room for Robertson, Kei Igawa was sent packing back to Scranton.  Boo-ya!
  • Chad Jennings reports that Ross Ohlendorf will be placed in the Scranton starting rotation in order to keep him on a set schedule.  They would aso like to see him use his developing splitter more often.  Keep in mind, though, the Yanks still view Ohlendorf as a reliever.
  • Bobby Abreu is starting to catch fire hitting .500 (10 for 20) /.583 / .900 over his last 5 games.
  • Robinson Cano is hitting .444 (8 for 18) / .421 /.889 over his last 4 games.
  • Andy Pettitte is a lifetime 7-4, 3.48 ERA, 1.23 WHIP in 17 starts against the Mets.  He is 3-0, 0.43 ERA, 0.86 WHIP over his last 3 starts and has essentially lowered his ERA a full run during that span (4.99 to 4.04).
  • Johan Santana is a lifetime 4-0, 2.98 ERA, 1.24 WHIP in 9 games (6 starts) against the Yanks.
  • Mets' hitters vs. Pettitte can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Santana can be viewed here.

The best part

of calling Igawa up and sending him down again?

I guarantee we won’t see him again for at least 10 days.

Not surprisngly...

I’m limited to the Cubs/Sox game. At least Mark Grace is the color man. Always was a big fan of him during his playing days.

Pete Abe has a few player updates....

Hideki Matsui: The Yankees admitted that surgery was a possibility. "That would be the last option but we can’t rule it out," Brian Cashman said. He had his knee drained again.

Ian Kennedy: Pitching today for Class A Tampa.

Phil Hughes: Two or three weeks away from getting in a game. "He’ll be back this season but I can’t say it’ll be on the major-league level," Cashman said.

Brian Bruney: Throwing a BP on Tuesday. First game will be 2-3 days after that.

Chris Britton: Pitching in a rehab game on Tuesday.

From the radio broadcast, a couple changes in the rotation:

Rasner Sunday
Moose Monday
Joba Tuesday
Ponson Wednesday/ Giese in the pen

I wonder if Cox isn't too far behind Robertson

because there’s really no need for Hawkins with Giese as the long man again.

We can hope

Despite what Newman said, I think we’ll see Melancon this season.

It's raining, thanks...

I’m sling boxing it from a NY friend…Damn black out…

jscape..

How is Horne and Marquez doing? I know they got hurt…Too bad or they would have been up. And what about Humberto?

by John Amato on Jun 28, 2008 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

Horne is rounding into shape.
Marquez has been so awful he’s not an option.
Newman said that Humberto will spend most of the season building up arm strength in single A.

We’d be talking about Horne going to the bullpen if IPK and Hughes weren’t hurt and ineffective.

No doubt

He went more than a month without pitching at all.

I listened to WFAN for a short time this afternoon

with Sweeny Murti and Jon Heyman co-anchoring for awhile.

I’m a big fan of Sweeny but I think Heyman is full of BS quite often. He still thinks Cashman may very well pull the trigger on a major deal in the next month when all signs clearly point in the opposite direction.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Abreu

was a major deal. I don’t see a guy like that out there, but I think Cash is one of the best traders in the game, so we’ll see soon.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a major deal

because he was a big name. But that was also a salary dump and the Yanks gave up virtually nothing in return.

That clearly wouldn’t be the case with Sabathia.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Cashman seems very good at reading the market, figuring out what other teams will offer, and not offering too much.

I am always surprised by what

GMs do. Abreu was a salary dump, and a footnote to the Corey Lidle trade.

I am excited to see Robertson

I hope he gets in a game soon. Remember Britton coming and going without pitching

Starters are different

Being fat makes a starter ‘durable’.

And believe me, Ponson will be gone very soon.

So we've seen

Jeter start 60 games this season- do we think his offseason workouts have improved his range?

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

Do the ratings which made you so critical look different?

He looks the same to me.

by Cbeck3 on Jun 28, 2008 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I haven’t looked yet.
FRAA UZR
2007 -3 -27
2008 -13 -10

FRAA (Fielding Runs Above Average) is a rate stat, so it should stay the same unless Jeter gets better or worse.
UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) is a counting stat, so we expect the negatives to accumulate as the season progresses.

There are a couple other metrics out there, but they tend to not share their data until after the season.

The games I’ve been at, he’s seemed the same.

Good to see Abreu hanging in there against Santana

He’s definitely coming out of his funk. He hadn’t been taking pitches this season like he normally does.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

Santana's next pitch will be 70.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

and 27 this inning.

A very high stress inning, even for 2 runs and a man on second.

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn it Robbie

He’s thrown 4+ pitches to 4 of 5 hitters, and you swing at the first pitch?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

Well....

at least everyone else worked Santana hard that inning. Can’t expect Cano to do the same.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I just wish

we had the flexibility to sit him and Melky for a pair of games.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely....

I’ve wanted some competition for Melky for awhile, but I’d like to see it happen with Cano too. Problem with that is there are no options in the minors to give Cano a push.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotcha!

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

That was HUGE

Because Wright has always killed Pettitte. I’d rather see him leadoff the next inning.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

When was the last time you saw a balk called?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 6:09 PM EDT reply actions

No matter what happens now

at least Santana is gone after this inning

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 6:14 PM EDT reply actions

I never doubted Robbie

I certainly wasn’t sitting here wishing that anyone else in the lineup was at the plate.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

Here's another reason why I'd rather have Gardner in the lineup

It would be nice to have a #9 hitter (or #8 in NL yards) who consistently takes pitches instead of having two hitters at the bottom of the order who don’t.

At least having Gardner would offset that.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

But

Girardi would probably bat him leadoff, cause all speedy centerfielders bat leadoff.

True

Damon won’t get as many days off with Matsui on the DL.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Thankfully

that’s the end of Santana.

Unfortunately, it’s probably the end of Pettitte.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

This delay definitely helps the Mets

Santana was coming out anyways and Pettitte’s pitch count was still in good shape at 73.

No way does Robertson enter this game unless it gets out of hand.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure about that

9 Rivera

Girardi isn't going to have the kid make his debut

against the heart of the order in a 2-run game against the Mets. Too much pressure to put on him in his debut.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

I think Mexican sounds good tonight. I’ll catch you guys after the delay.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 28, 2008 6:27 PM EDT reply actions

i know its a little late

but i was trying to figure out yesterday what was more embarrassing:
A) giving up 9 RBI to carlos delgado
B) getting shutout for six innings by sidney ponson

as ridiculous as it sounds, i think with the way this season has gone so far, option A wins.

Ewing with the step...YES! and the foul!

by Anthony Masons Haircut on Jun 28, 2008 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

this has been a strange series...

delgado’s record day, ponson’s solid start, now farnsworth not only throws a scoreless 8th to protect a one run lead but he doesn’t even allow a base-runner.

what’s next? andy phillips walk-off HR?

by Clutch like Leyritz on Jun 28, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

I can't see the game

but from what I understand, it took a great play by Damon on Wright to get him out.

Nonetheless, I’ll take it.

by anaconda on Jun 28, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't see it either

I was condemned to watch the Sox/Cubs game in LA – doesn’t Fox realize there are more New Yorkers on the left coast?

by docgonzo on Jun 28, 2008 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

alright

nothing like watching one of my top five most hated players ever going down looking. i think that officially brings trot’s career BA vs. the Yankees down to .728.
