PREGAME NOTES:

  • As expected, Hideki Matsui was placed on the 15-day DL, so Ponson will take his place on the active roster.
  • In addition, Ross Ohlendorf has been optioned back to Scranton and [gulp] Kei Igawa has been recalled to take his spot.  I happen to be one of those who believes in Ohlendorf, so perhaps some regular work in Scranton for a few weeks will help him get his mojo back.
  • Sidney Ponson is a lifetime 1-1, 2.86 ERA, 1.32 WHIP in 3 starts against the Mets.
  • Pedro Martinez is a lifetime 11-10, 3.03 ERA, 1.05 WHIP in 31 starts against the Yanks.
  • Mets' hitters vs. Ponson can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Martinez can be viewed here.

Good god

there’s a decent chance that Ponson and Igawa could pitch in the same game.

200 million sure as hell doesn’t buy what it used to.

The rotation not being great can be attributed to injuries. The bullpen is a disgrace.

The disgraceful bullpen

rests on on a combination of injuries and the manager.
The pieces are there, either in MLB or AAA.

Albalajedo, Britton and Bruney are on the DL.
Ohlendorf has better in single innings of work than in multi-inning appearances, but he spent the early months serving as long man.

And the starters’ injuries (and ineffectiveness) has put the mediocre relievers on the mound more often than we would have seen them otherwise.

Ugh

Jonny A isn’t any better than the crappy guys here now.

Britton is a tick better than them maybe, but hasn’t been given enough chances to determine that either way.

Hopefully the first game will wake Cashman the hell up. They need to get new arms up here asap.

Bruney is a tough loss, but that just illustrates my point. The Yankees went into this season knowing, insisting they were going to move Joba, and did nothing – zero – to get someone who could do the job when he departed. They have Rivera and five guys who are mediocre or terrible.

Bruney pitching well this year was a miracle. They couldn’t have expected him to perform like that. And I guess they really did think Farnsworth was capable of pitching the 8th. DELUSIONAL.

Edwar is not a good pitcher.

I believed the one inning thing about Ohlendorf at first , but I’ve given up for now. He was great in one inning against Piitsburgh, then horrible a few days later against the Mets. He might be a good reliever someday, but not until he can be more consistent. He’s either dominant or he gets rocked.

It’s only very recently that they haven’t gotten a lot of innings from the starters.

Moose has pitched with more length than anyone could have expected. Joba is now a six or seven inning pitcher. Pettitte has turned it around, Rasner had a few starts where he stuck around a while, and Geis pitched into the 7th inning in his first start.

What a difference

Sidney

could have just as easily given up 5 runs. He has been all over the road. Better to be lucky than good.

No doubt

We are seeing why his ERA in Texas was decent but his WHIP was sky high. He’s been extremely lucky.

I would say

Get him the heck out of this game and don’ t push your luck. But then I remembered the bullpen stinks.

I’m more comfortable with Sidney Ponson protecting a lead than any of the current Yankee middle relievers.

Ladies and gentlemen your 2008 Yankees!

come on Robby!

Don’t hack at the first pitch.

Karstens pitched another good game tonight

7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K – 93 pitches, 65 strikes

By no means is Karstens going to be the long term answer any more than Ponson, Giese, or Rasner, but he’s got the hot hand right now and he’ll be the next one who gets called up.

by anaconda on Jun 27, 2008 9:57 PM EDT   0 recs

Would you

give him Geisse’s spot yet?

Probably

and make Giese the long man and send Igawa back down.

by anaconda on Jun 27, 2008 10:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Then again....

If Rasner stinks it up again on Sunday, they could give Karstens his spot and let Giese make another start.

by anaconda on Jun 27, 2008 10:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Or let Ponson

take Giese’s spot.

Why knock it

If Ponson can eat up a few starts and do okay, why not let him? For better or worse, he’s the best stop-gap we have until after the All-Star break, if not beyond.

by docgonzo on Jun 27, 2008 10:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't disagree with that

He’s earned another start. I just know it’s not going to last long.

Yeah

you can only get out of so many bases-loaded jams before getting burned.

Mmm

Yay Robbie!

Cy-dney Ponson!!

Who would have thought. Let’s hope we caught lightning in a bottle.
