PREGAME NOTES:

Johnny Damon is back in the lineup after missing the first two games of the series with the sore arch/foot.

Hideki Matsui is still out with a bum knee and Girardi said a DL stint remains a good possibility.

Mike Mussina is a lifetime 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.67 WHIP in one career start against the Pirates.

Paul Maholm is a lifetime 0-1, 5.06 ERA, 2.06 WHIP in one start against the Yanks.  He is 4-1, 3.47 ERA, 1.22 WHIP in 9 starts at home this season.

Pirates' hitters vs. Moose can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Maholm can be viewed here.

Chad Jennings has an excellent Q&A with Mark Newman and discusses the progress of several Yankee youngsters including Mark Melancon, David Robertson, J.B. Cox, Humberto Sanchez, Alfredo Aceves, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy.

Obviously, the headline of this interview is Newman's take Melancon claiming that he could be pitching for Trenton all season.  However, Newman made similar claims regarding Trenton starter Daniel McCutchen on May 15 and McCutchen was promoted to Scranton just 9 days later.

Newman also claimed that Joba Chamberlain probably wasn't going to pitch in the major leagues last season, so take these words with a little grain of salt.

UPDATE:

The game has been postponed and the makeup date has been scheduled for Thursday, July 10 at 7:05pm.

I love early leads

but it seems like every time we have a lead in the 5th I fall asleep on the couch and miss the end of the game.

Just thought I'd mention this from Chad Jennings:

Brett Gardner went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and two runs scored. He’s now reached base 22 times in the past seven games. In that stretch he’s scored nine runs, stolen five bases and drawn 11 walks against six strikeouts.

If Matsui

isn’t going to be ready for the double header tomorrow, I’d put him on the DL and call up Gardner.

I'd like to see that too

They could kill two birds with one stone

and let Damon DH for a week or two while Matsui is on the DL.

Is Moose

missing spots or are the Pirates just hitting?

Boy...if there's a long rain delay

that is going to really hurt the pen for this weekend.

I don't think so

I’d send down Edwar to make room for Ponson either way. You can option Moeller after the first game. If Ohlendorf or (dare I dream) Hawkins have to pitch multiple innings tonight, you can send him down for Robertson.

There's a lot of "ifs" there...

I don’t think Edwar is going to be sent down. I think there’s a good chance it will be Alberto Gonzalez.

Moeller

hasn’t played since June 5th. How much longer are they really going to keep him around?

I think Rasner or Giese goes down

I doubt Ponson has any options. When he goes he’s gone.

It won't be Giese

He’s pitched well. I think Rasner has earned another couple of starts.

If Moose has to come out, the pen is going to suffer. Hawkins threw like 50 pitches on Tuesday and Ohlendorf threw 1.1 IP last night.

I suppose if they really want to get creative they could have Giese take over for Moose tonight and promote Karstens for tomorrow.

Point is Ponson is a Yankee starter until

they give up on him.

I hope they at least show a Yankeeography I haven’t seen.

Hmm

Got to love these getaway night games…

They might call this one

because it doesn’t look like it’s going to let up anytime soon. If they do start it back up, they’ve lost Moose.

I think letting Giese take over is a possibility because it saves the pen for the night and Karstens could be called up to start in Giese’s place tomorrow.

Probably won’t happen, but it would make some sense. It’s very possible Giese may have already gone back to NY.

So much for that thought

Pete Abe says Giese did head back to NY.

Does anybody else here

read Joe Posnanski’s blog? Did you see his piece on Joe Morgan?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 26, 2008 9:26 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Posnanski

is getting ready to write a book on the ‘75 Reds, and one of the conclusions he’s reached, based on newspaper articles from the time, is that Joe Morgan was ahead of his time in terms of knowing what was important for an individual to do for the team to win (get on base, hit for power, steal for a high success rate). But no one really paid any attention to what he had to say, and that it was somewhere in there that he gave up on ‘statistics.’

Interesting

I’m no fan of Morgan the broadcaster, but Morgan the baseball player was one of the greats. No question about it.

The plot thickens.....

George King says Giese is still in Pittsburgh because the airport was closed due to the storms.

I make it a rule to get confirmation from other beatwriters before I believe anything King says, but this would be pretty wacky scenario if he ended up going back to the ballpark to pitch tonight.

Ain’t gonna happen, but it would be a goofy story.

anaconda, Splice Today posted that same nonsense cut and paste job all over SBN, so I’m going to remove him. Sigh.
