PREGAME NOTES:

  • Joe Girardi officially announced that Sidney Ponson will pitch Game 2 of Friday's double-header against the Mets.  Yuck.
  • Both Johnny Damon (foot) and Hideki Matsui (knee) remain out of the lineup and probably won't see any action in this series.
  • Bobby Abreu is a horrific 2-for-30 with RISP in the month of June.
  • Joba Chamberlain has never faced the Pirates.  He is 0-0, 2.45 ERA, 1.53 WHIP in 4 starts since his conversion to the rotation.
  • Zach Duke has never faced the Yanks.  He is 4-2, 3.18 ERA, 1.45 WHIP in 8 starts at home this season.
  • Pirates' hitters vs. Chamberlain can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Duke can be viewed here.

No Matsui nor Damon.
No Gardner.
Ponson, not Karstens or McCutchen, confirmed to start Friday at Shea against Pedro.

So Jscape

Who does McCutchen remind you of MLB player wise?

by MedFan on Jun 25, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

No clue

I’ve never seen him pitch.
But I have seen Ponson pitch…
The scouting reports I’ve seen on McCutchen (fastball, curve, change), and everything I’ve read about him makes me think he can be an effective option.

Ponson

Not a coincidence that he gets the start at Shea. The home crowd would have no patience for his fat ass.

If I’m Karstens I’m really annoyed by this decision. He would have either made the team or been the last man sent down if he didn’t get hurt in the spring, and now, after he was the pitcher of the week in his league, they give a spot start to an eight time (estimate) loser who has flushed every opportunity he’s been given right down the toilet. I have no doubt Sidney will suck on Friday, and even if he doesn’t, he’s an ass who I don’t want anywhere near the team.

Karstens is not a major league full-time starting pitcher, and there’s at least a decent chance he would have gotten bombed on Friday. But he earned this chance to pitch, especially considering who they opted to give the ball to. Karstens has to to be wondering if he’ll ever get another shot. The younger guys are getting closer to ready, and Giese and Rasner would both have to fall apart soon for it to happen.

Oh well.

With Damon injured and Matsui hobbling around why not bring Gardner up and see what he can do? What about Austin Jackson?

by MedFan on Jun 25, 2008 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Jackson is still at least

a year away. He’s doing ok at AA .280/.366/.439, but it’s he’s only got 300 ABs out of single A; there’s no way he’s skipping a level.

What was Bernie hitting

When they called up Melky?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 25, 2008 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's face it....

Melky got his chance to play every day because Matsui and Sheffield went down for most of the 2006 season.

He is out there every day primarily because of his defense. His production at the plate is secondary.

Even Cashman said during ST that Melky needs to keep producing to keep his CF job. So far, in my opinion, he’s not earning his spot.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

No

They called Melky up to be an everyday player in 2005 and benched Bernie. Melky allowed that inside the park homer in Boston and was promptly sent back down. But he had a chance in 2005 because Bernie was struggling.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

But he was sent down after that

by Cbeck3 on Jun 25, 2008 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Gardner is a good defender himself

And he would be an upgrade at the plate because he gets on base considerably more than Melky.

Combine that with all the stolen bases and he becomes a more productive player than Melky.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

But Bernie was hitting

.244 .326 .356 on July 7th when Melky was called up to take his place.
They gave Melky a shot to replace a former Gold Glover and fan favorite.
No reason to think they won’t give Gardner the same shot.

You’re right they’ll tolerate less offense for the defense, but we’ll see how long.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Jun 25, 2008 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not disputing that he was called up in 2005

My point is simply that he became the every day starter and has remained there because of injuries to 2/3 of the Yankee outfield in 2006.

QAnd Bernie's defense had become awful

No, that's wrong

They’ve done too much buying….

Giambi, Igawa, Farnsworth, Brown, Weaver, Pavano, Vasquez, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens in 2007.

Every one of those guys were acquired via trade or free agent signing. And every one of them were disappointments or busts.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It was quick fixes and a lack of young talent

that has contributed to the reasons why this team has not been good enough to win the WS the last several years.

They have to change that and rebuilding the core with youth is the way to do it. Signing free agents and making dumb trades is not the way to rebuild this team.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Risking his next start to pitch with an 8-run lead. He’s going to finish at about 115 pitches. This makes absolutely zero sense.

by long time listener on Jun 25, 2008 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

He's out of gas.

I like him pitching some low-pressure high-pitch count innings. He’s going to have to pitch over 100 some time, may as well do it when mistakes don’t matter.

by Jugwine on Jun 25, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

They also have to think about this weekend too

with the doubleheader and Ponson and Giese pitching.

Not to mention Moose is pitching tomorrow.

I think Girardi wanted to squeeze another inning out of him because the next few days are a crap shoot.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it will take time.

I really feel like the we have a great nucleaus with Joba, Hughes, CMW.

Yeah Right

The season starts next week.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

We Cannot

...win without pitching. No team can. With Wang on the DL and a dwindled unproven bench, Sabathia is the only chioce for the post season unless Tampa takes a header. I just don’t see an option for this year. Cashman better be making his money right now.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't hold your breath

He’s not going to do that now. If Sabathia ends up in the Bronx – it won’t happen until the offseason.

If they didn’t pull the trigger on Santana, they won’t do it for Sabathia.

Just for shits and giggles

You are the Yankee GM right now. Who do you offer the tribe for CC?

I anxiously await your reply.

I’m eagerly awaiting your answer as well.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Can you show me a trade for CC that doesn't make

the team weaker? And I don’t need your money. I’ll bet you an honor point.

I read yesterday...

that the Tribe wants Joba and Cano for Sabathia.

Of course, nobody in their right mind would make that move, but it goes to show you that getting Sabathia isn’t going to be cheap.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

It's Always about this year

without pitching, next week we start leaving the playoffs behind us. We just lost 4 of 6 in a severly weak NL Central. We start playing real teams next week.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

In case you were wondering...

The Yanks were in worse shape this time last season. They didn’t stay above .500 until the middle of July.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Torre

was running the show then. This is new. Gettin’ Girardied is coming to fruition. Then there is Tampa.

Please answer the Haggs question

I really do want to know what you would do.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

You would give up Cano and Hughes now

when they could get Sabathia for money alone in 4 months?

That’s insane.

Yup and no its not.

He's a Pup

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess you are proving the point

He is wildly inconsistent. He had a great run, yes. But how you can say he is a “great” QB is beyond me.

The analogy is, these yanks have been wildly inconsistent yet you are ready to trade away the future. The cheap future, for a guy who is going to want near Johan money who is not Johan.

by seanp23 on Jun 25, 2008 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly

Since you brought up the word “you”. Thus personal. Are you a product of the public school system and believe the world is fair? No espcially in sports it never will be. George understood that, now all you nobody wins T-Ballers expect this game to be fair. Come on – it goes to those that pay the highest dollar. Yank s grabbing Ruth from the s>x, Mr. October was free? WE NEED Sabathia now to spark this team.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I Strongly

...disagree. A good hurler will gel this team and wake em up at this point. They (Cashman and ‘Brenners) are fools if they don’t land him.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess they're fools then

because I guarantee you that Sabathia will not be a Yankee on August 1st.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Like I

...said – Links for us this year.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

what?

I dont even know what this means. I never said anything about fair.

I said”you” because I asked “you” a question.

Its not just a question about money to get Sabbathia at this point. “You” are talking about giving up one of the yanks most highly touted pitching prospects “and whoever else they want” for a guy who is going to want a monster contract on top of that.

by seanp23 on Jun 25, 2008 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

by seanp23 on Jun 25, 2008 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You

Would be wrong in only that the only time I ever listen to the FAN is leaving Giants Stadium going home to Pennsylvania listening for player quotes.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

That's more like the 80s George

and the reason why they never won during the 80s. No offense, but I’m glad you’re not running the team.

I’d much rather miss the postseason this year and be in much better shape next season.

This team is more than just a Sabathia away from WS contention and that move would be nuts.

by anaconda on Jun 25, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I

agree to disagree. You cannot, repeat cannot win without pitching. Period.

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

From the Cleveland side, probably not enough

from our side, too much.

I don’t trade Hughes. He’s worth more to me than CC.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

by Cbeck3 on Jun 25, 2008 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok.

You want the Yankees to do this trade right away, because, as you claim, the season starts next week.

Hughes is on the DL. I don’t think you can trade a player on the disabled list unless you call that player “a player to be named later”, which the Yankees wouldn’t do. So Hughes is virtually untradeable until he comes off the DL, which most people say is August.

The trading deadline is July 31. Unless you give Cleveland a blank piece of paper for them to fill in any three names they want, they’re not trading CC until about 10 minutes before the deadline, if they trade him at all. With they’re pitching they could be right back in the race a month from now.

You can wish for good players from other teams all you want. Wish in one hand and crap in the other, and see which hand fills up first.

Pitching is The Key

..give ‘em Hughes, give ‘en Cano, and wahtever they want in picks and cash. You CANNOT win without pitching. We don’t have it, Disd anyone watch Rasner’s performance last night?

by whollycow on Jun 25, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

explain

how trading Hughes-a 21 year old highly touted, cheap prospect- for an older, soon to be very expensive starter changes the fact that Rasner has been shitty?

by seanp23 on Jun 25, 2008 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

But

....oh nevermind, you don’t get it.

Put a trade on the table that makes sense. It sounds like you want Cashman to call up the Tribe and tell them “we’ll give you whatever you want”.

Great idea.
