Irresponsible Rumor Mongering
It's June, which means it's the time of the year when I start paying attention to MLB Trade Rumors again. They've got two Yankee related posts up today.
The first addresses long-standing interest in the Rockies' Brian Fuentes. The 32-year old has made the All-Star Team the last three straight years, and he is enjoying another fine season: 1.19 WHIP, 21K: 8BB, 22.2IP.
That said, I think Melancon, Cox, Robertson, Ohlendorf, Britton, Veras, Albaledejo, and Sanchez (who is on the 40-man) will all have to fail before we trade for a middle reliever, especially a 32-year old free agent-to-be.
The second post warrants a lot more attention.
Unless the Indians turn things around, Ken Rosenthal thinks they'll have to consider dealing C.C. Sabathia in a Dan Haren-esque deal. That trade got Oakland four of Arizona's top 10 prospects for two years of Haren, while a trade for Sabathia would only be good for half a season.
I suspect a similar deal might run Kennedy or Hughes, one of Melancon, Cox, or Sanchez, plus one of Romine or Cervelli (who should be back from his Spring Training broken wrist by then). The Indians might prefer more players who are further from MLB-ready, but that begins to tax my speculative powers/ knowledge of the farm.
Sabathia is showing signs of wear after his phenomenal Cy Young season: 1.39 WHIP, 74K:25BB, 76.1IP.
I might take my chances that he'll hit free agency; you're going to need a boatload of money to sign him either way.

Sabathia
In my opinion, I don’t think Cashman is going to touch Sabathia whether it’s during the season or offseason.
If they passed on Santana during the offseason, why would they now turn around and pull the trigger on a deal for a pitcher with bigger long term health risks (his weight and miles on that arm) who will demand almost as much money?
It seems like Rosenthal dropped the Yanks’ name because that’s what everyone does when a big name becomes available.
Hank might want him, but my bet is that Cashman and Hal doesn’t.
Regarding Fuentes, I heard Cashman last week on Michael Kay’s radio show and he flatly said that he would like a lefty in the pen. So, it seems like Cashman would certainly be open to dealing for a reliever like Fuentes.
Sabathia
I really don’t see Cleveland falling far enough out of the race to deal him. They are only 4.5 out and are four games worse than their Pythagorean projection. While Chicago is better than I expected, I doubt they will pull away. While Sabathia’s numbers on the year aren’t great, he has really turned it around since the beginning of May. Cleveland will need him to make a run at the division.
