Rosenthal: Yanks trying to unload Hawkins
The free agent acquisition of LaTroy Hawkins last December was perhaps the most predictable failure of the entire offseason next to Dontrelle Willis getting massacred in the American League.
Ken Rosenthal reports that Cashman is now trying to right this terrible wrong:
The Yankees are aggressively shopping right-hander LaTroy Hawkins, two rival executives say, intending to clear a spot for a reliever who currently is at Class AAA. Righty J.B. Cox, who missed all of last season after undergoing elbow-ligament transplant surgery, is one candidate; he began the season at Class A, but has since moved to AAA, where he has allowed one run in 12 1/3 innings. Righty David Robertson, who began the season at AA, also has been impressive at AAA. Hawkins, signed to a one-year, $3.75 million free-agent contract, has a 6.08 ERA in 22 appearances .
As far as I'm concerned, the sooner the front office gets rid of Hawkins - the sooner we'll see someone promoted who can actually help the team.

send him to an NL team
for a box of balls and a bag of seeds. Honestly though, who’s gonna take this guy, even if (and they will) the Yanks pay most of his salary?
I don’t think there was anyone here who thought this was a good signing.

Why bother ...
shopping him. Cut him. Cut him now. It’s $3.75 for one freakin’ year. Do it. Do it now. Do it yesterday, dammit.

I thought it was a decent
signing just because it was no risk. Like you guys said its 3.75 million. Who cares? It didn’t work and now we can move on with a new plan.
Its not like J.B. Cox could have had his spot all along and I am excited to see him. I would have liked to see more of Patterson, Bruney, and Britton. But we couldn’t foresee the Bruney injury or Girardi’s Torre-ish hatred of Britton.
What I like is that we didn’t give a multi year deal to Viz.

I think you're right. After the first 2 games he's been pretty reasonable.
Look at his game log. It is evident that he has to go. But he has not been too bad. Someone can use him. However as Karstens, Bruney, Hughes, Kennedy, Britton recover and the minor leaguers like Cox come along roster spots are goping to be hard to come by.
We are loaded with pitchers around the lower end of the roster.
Our real problem is that we need someone (actually several people) to settle down and shine.

Absolutely right.
Plus we got the draft pick when the Rockies signed Viz.
Now we just hope that Jeremy Bleich reaches his potential. Saber-Scouting:
a lefty with three solid pitches (fastball from 88-91, plus change, good curve) and command that has been coming and going this year, but has been a strength in the past (#3 in HS command on the BA top tools for 2005 draft) and a clean arm and solid mechanics indicate it will continue to be.
Plus, Viz hasn’t been indomitable in his 3.1IP.
