PREGAME NOTES:

  • For those who haven't seen it, Phil Hughes reports on his own blog that he has been pain free for about a week and expects to start throwing soon.
  • Ian Kennedy "felt good" after throwing roughly 30 pitches during a bullpen session yesterday and will be headed to Tampa to continue his rehab.  However, with Darrell Rasner pitching well and Joba Chamberlain in the rotation to stay, look for Kennedy to spend significant time in Scranton upon his return from injury.
  • Here's a disturbing trend - Chien-Ming Wang has walked three or more hitters in 6 consecutive starts.  No Yankee pitcher has done that since Roger Clemens did it in 10 consecutive starts way back in 1999.
  • Yanks have never faced Dana Eveland.
  • Wang is a lifetime 1-0, 1.42 ERA, 1.18 WHIP in 2 starts against the Athletics.
  • Athletics' career numbers vs. Wang can be viewed here.

Second time

That Girardi has rested Matsui in the last week I think.

Unless there is something physically preventing him from playing RF, he should be in the lineup tonight instead of Abreu. Does Girardi watch different games than the rest of us? Does he think Abreu plays RF like Clemente? WTF??? At the very least he should have given one day off to Hideki, and one day off to Bobby, not both to the 2nd or 3rd hottest hitter on the team.

Without checking, I’m gonna say that Hideki is a better hitter against lefties, and he is red hot right now. As is Giambi, so considering his foot problems I don’t have a problem with DH’ing him.

AARRRGHHHH!!!!!!!!

Abreu

Girardi said on the pregame that Abreu was supposed to get the day off tonight but didn’t at the last minute because he’s 2 for 4 against Eveland and Matsui hasn’t seen him.

Abreu will probably get the day off tomorrow.

That said, I’m with you. Matsui should not be getting so many days off while the way he’s hitting.

Hopefully

we’ll have this kid in the showers by the 4th and Wang will pitch effectively.

No?

I’m just wrong. I’d always assumed they were related, even when he was playing (for the O’s, I think?).

From Rays.com:

He’s not my father: Since reaching the Major Leagues with the White Sox in 1999, Chris Singleton has heard it everywhere he goes: “How’s your father?”

The father everybody asks the Rays outfielder about is former Major Leaguer Ken Singleton, who is not Chris’ father.

“It’s been like that since day one, in 1999,” Chris said. “Most people think I’m his son. Sometimes I have fun with it, and other times it takes too much time to try to explain to people.”

During the Yankees series, the questions have intensified because Ken does color for the Yankees broadcasts.

Ken Singleton actually has a baseball-playing son who plays in the Blue Jays organization. Chris and Ken like to tease about the situation. Chris said he looks forward to meeting the real son.

“That will be interesting when I meet him, so I can tell him, ‘I’ve been taking all this heat for you,’” Chris said.

On an elevator ride prior to Tuesday’s contest, Ken Singleton talked with a Yankees employee when she told him, “You must be really proud seeing your son play last night.”

Singleton smiled. “Um, he’s not my son.”

It shows

how long it’s been since I sat through a full episode of BBTN. I was thinking of Ken Singleton Jr (who is Ken’s son)- and I didn’t realize it was Chris who is on BBTN.

BBTN

I don’t watch it anymore either. Gone are the days of Harold Reynolds, and Gammons, Olney, or Kurkjian being on the show nearly every night.

That was must see TV every night a few years ago.

Did Wang really hit the first batter and still only throw 7 pitches?

Eveland has been effectively wild

It would be nice to see the Yanks take advantage of that for once.

52 pitches already

Plate a couple of runs here and we’d be in great shape…

for 54 pitches.

Wang threw a slider to start the 3rd

And he threw a slider to open the game. Other than that he’s been all fastball- 23 of 25. I think they read my post about going back to his strength.

Jon Heyman

He says that Kevin Millar could be a possibility for the Yanks. I tend to doubt it unless Giambi goes down for awhile – and that is always possible.

Heyman is still a good reporter, but I think he talks out of his ass about half the time.

by anaconda on Jun 10, 2008 11:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think

it’s that impossible. Shelley not playing tonight against the lefty tells me that Girardi has seen enough of him. Once Joe G realizes that Betemit can’t really hit lefties either, he’ll be looking for options.

I think I’d rather carry Millar/A-Gon over WB/Shelley.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

I'll buy that

But I think Heyman kinda threw that rumor out there to start some conversation. I don’t think he had any real insight on what the front office is thinking.

But you’re right, I’ll take Millar/Gonzalez over Duncan/Betemit right now for sure.

Not sure it’s going to happen, but I think it’s time to call up Brett Gardner. Melky needs some pushing and his mental lapses are so irritating.

I nearly threw my remote at my TV when he threw his helmet in yesterday’s game. And then I nearly threw my TV out the window when he slid into First Base to end the game.

I’m getting really tired of Melky. He needs some competition for CF.

by anaconda on Jun 10, 2008 11:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was talking about that

with Pete Abe and some other Yankee fans at the Scranton game on Saturday- if Gardner were a righty he’d be on the team already. But are you going to sit (or trade) Melky or Damon to get Gardner semi-regular ABs? It doesn’t make sense to stunt his development to use him as a pinch runner, and he doesn’t have the arm to play right field.

All true...

which is why I’m not sure it’s going to happen. Cashman said a few weeks ago that Castro would be the first guy brought up if they need a speed guy.

The organization wants Gardner to play everyday – whether it’s in Scranton or the bigs.

Mets

It’s a good thing the Yanks play crosstown from the Mets because they would be getting hammered a lot harder in the media.

Mets once lead 5-0 tonight, but the D-Backs just took a 9-5 lead in the 9th after a 2-run bomb by Nancy Drew’s younger brother.

Yeah, making the deal for Santana really put them over the top, eh?

by anaconda on Jun 10, 2008 11:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I get into arguments about this all the time

I just don’t see how that team is supposed to be as good as the new york media expects. The starting 5 they went into the season with was santana, maine, perez, el duque and pedro. Yikes.

BENCH HIM, Girardi!!!!!

I’m so sick of Melky sliding into fist base. He might have been safe if he had run through the bag.

If we are in a save situation do we

send Mo out for a 4th straight game?

I think thats asking for trouble. Maybe Wang can give us a quick inning so we can think about complete game.

Seems that way

Mo has pitched a lot lately, but he hasn’t thrown a lot of pitches in those outings. One way or another, we can expect Mo to get a day off tomorrow if he pitches today.
