Bronx Bound- Week 9
You know what it looks like to wiggle out of trouble? Jeff Marquez allowed 24 baserunners in 12 innings but only allowed 4 earned runs.
Zach McAllister made his first start for the High A Tampa Yankees.
The Mark Melancon (me-LAN-sin) watch continues in Trenton. Pitching on six days rest, he gave up his first run in over two weeks. Mike Ashmore of Thunder Thoughts has a neat interview with Melancon. They talk about his repertoire and his rehab program, along with some human interest stuff.
Looks like there will be no suspension for Tabata this time, despite rumors that he scuffled with one of his teammates in the dugout.

It looks like Humberto Sanchez will start pitching in some extended Spring Training games within the next week or two. I tend to doubt that he can help the big club this season because he’s had too many other setbacks already and that has slowed his progress coming off TJ.
I bet Melancon gets promoted to Scranton within the next couple of weeks as well and Cox will may very well get the call to the Bronx by the All-Star Break or soon after.

Oh yes....
And Alan Horne is expected to make his last rehab start tomorrow. He’ll probably be back in the Scranton rotation by the weekend.
That is certainly good news.

Losing Horne
has been one of the big blows this season- I had him pencilled in as the first callup when we needed a starter.
Where did you read that about Humberto? I’ve been keeping an eye out and didn’t see anything…

I read that weeks ago about Sanchez
in an article here:
Further down the line is right-hander Humberto Sanchez, who is coming back from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery performed in the spring of 2007. The Yankees have told Sanchez that he will be used as a reliever through the rest of this season, beginning a program that he hopes will have him in pinstripes by the end of the year.
Already throwing his fastball at about 80 to 85 percent, Sanchez has been told to be ready to pitch in an extended Spring Training game on June 10, and then join the Gulf Coast League Yankees, working his way up the ladder.
“The biggest thing is being pain free,” Sanchez said. “It feels strong. It feels pretty normal right now. My goal is to come back healthy and help this team.”
There is also a piece that came out this morning in Pinstripes Plus updating his progress. But, it now states that he won’t be facing hitters until the third week of June as opposed to June 10 in above article.

Jose Tabata
I spoke with someone in the Yankees system who has, at times, worked with Tabata. Says he is a cancer and will someday cost people their jobs because he is a primadonna and uncontrollable at times.
Meanwhile, the same guy stated that Colin Curtis (in the same Trenton OF) is a primo guy and a really good player. Curtis does little things not in the stat lines which help teams win games, although his numbers are pretty decent.

Curtis
Is definitely someone to keep an eye on, though he has been overshadowed by Tabata and Jackson.
I’m not giving up on Tabata yet- there’s just too much talent there. But I can’t pretend to be encouraged by his performance this year (on or off the field). That said, there’s plenty of time for him to turn himself around.
