PREGAME NOTES:

  • Good news on A-Rod.  He completed his first rehab workout in Tampa today and everything seems to be going swimmingly.  He will have another MRI on Monday morning before he gets the okay to play in a couple of extended games.  Assuming there are no setbacks, he could be activated as soon as Thursday (May 15).
  • In a bit of a surprise, Kyle Farnsworth's three-game suspension for throwing behind the head of Manny Ramirez on April 19 has been reduced to just one game.  He will serve it tonight.
  • Chris Britton has been demoted once again to Scranton to make room for Kei Igawa on the roster.
  • Igawa makes his first career start against the Tigers.  He is already slated to make another start on Wednesday in Tampa.
  • Kenny Rogers is a lifetime 6-7, 6.25 ERA, 1.87 WHIP in 36 starts against the Yanks, including a 6-4 victory on April 29 at the Stadium.  Yanks career numbers vs. Rogers can be viewed here.

I'm going to put the whole Joba fist pump thing to rest for now, but Joel Sherman made a good point on his Hardball Blog today:

We [NY media] criticize Joe Torre and Tom Glavine for showing too little emotion, and then we criticize Joba Chamberlain and Jose Reyes for showing too much. Is there some pamphlet they can purchase somewhere to learn just the right amount of emotion to show to make all the people happy all time?

Am I the only one who feels Igawa is a helpless lamb being led to the slaughterhouse tonight against the Tigers lineup?

This is hardly shocking

I’ll take a struggling Kennedy any day over Igawa. And we have another start to look forward to on Wednesday.

I'm not even watching tonight

Is Kennedy going to be back for the weekend? I have tix to the Mets games.

He's going to start on Sunday for Scranton

I’m hoping Kennedy pitches well again so he can get back ASAP. At least he’s got an ability to get hitters out.

Igawa doesn’t even have a chance out there.

Kennedy will be fine

Igawa…not in a million billion years.

He better not

get another start after tonight. They should send him back to the minors, right now, and leave him there until his contract is expired.

I've defended Igawa

as much as humanly possible. I’ve reached my limit- the Yankees have too much pitching with potential to waste anymore starts on Kei Igawa. If they can trade him for a bag of balls, I’d pull the trigger.

Then again, Brian Cashman got two decent MLB relievers (Britton and Albaladejo) for two guys who are not MLB caliber starters (Wright and Clippard)- I wouldn’t put a similar heist past one of the best GMs in baseball.

Pete Abe likes to beat a dead horse as much as anyone

but I let out a chuckle when I read this:

Say this for Kei Igawa, he didn’t show up anybody by pumping his fist like that rotten Joba.

Meanwhile, he threw 64 pitches and two swinging strikes.

It’s pretty tough to throw 64 pitches and the opposing hitters just swing and miss twice.

it's not tough at all -

It’s called “not having a big league fastball (or slider or curve or change)”.

Well...

Igawa throws harder than Moose does. I bet Moose would kill to throw an 89 MPH fastball these days.

Nonetheless, Moose has been doing this pitching thing a whole lot longer than Igawa and does know how to pitch even with an average fastball.

I’ll have to see what Girardi says about the outing but it seems like Igawa was just trying to get ahead in the count with a first pitch fastball and they were sitting on it all night. Even thought he didn’t issue any walks, he couldn’t throw anything else for strikes and it was like batting practice.

Of course, he was pitching up in the zone all night as well.
