PREGAME NOTES:

  • Jorge Posada remains on target for a mid-week return after making a couple of strong throws to second base in game action today.  He will likely get a day off tomorrow and play in two more extended Spring Training games on Monday and Tuesday before he is activated from the DL.
  • Hideki Matsui is tearing the cover off the ball these days - hitting .548 (17 for 31) over his last 8 games while raising his average to an AL-leading .339.
  • On the other side of that spectrum, Derek Jeter is in a horrific 3 for 37 (.081) slide since he was hit on the wrist 10 days ago.
  • Chien-Ming Wang is a lifetime 2-0, 1.71 ERA, 1.00 WHIP in 3 starts against the Twins.
  • Boof Bonser is a lifetime 0-2, 9.31 ERA, 2.07 WHIP in 2 starts against the Yanks.

The Yanks

are going to send someone down to bring up a long man for Joba’s start on Tuesday. I’m betting Chris Britton goes down… again.

Slow night

It’s turn around time. Pitching will be a bane as long as developement of 20 year olds at this level is a strategy.

Wang is struggling through a rut just like Pettitte did this month. Hopefully, he can battle and get a win and turn things around.

Go figure

Giambi makes the good throw to second but Jeter returns with a terrible throw. Although, Jeter has made quite a few bad throws lately.

did you guys know

that edwar is like a lefty specialist. I havent heard Kay say that before…

by seanp23 on May 31, 2008 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

I've heard it

The reason is because his change-up is more effective against lefties.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Almost Seems

...like a tech glitch in his delivery. More air balls off his pitch than we’re used to seeing. I agree, he’ll rekindle.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

Makes You

...wonder if that pitch off Jeter’s paw wasn’t worse than reported; doesn’t it.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

I'm sure

that’s a huge part of his recent slump.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

No Doubt

...it hasn’t helped what started before that, though. Some of the kids have stepped it up since then. Damn, they just tied it.

David Robertson has 5 K’s in 1.1 IP tonight for Scranton. No, that’s not a type-o – must have been a dropped third strike in there somewhere.

His big problem is that he issues too many free passes.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

Robertson had a really good night: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 6 K and got the victory in extra innings for Scranton.

Mark Melancon wasn’t as fortunate for Trenton: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER

Melancon’s stats hardly matter at this point because the organization is really trying to build up his arm strength coming off TJ.

It’s just a matter of time before he gets promoted to Scranton – probably within the next couple of weeks.

Gah

Double play. Odds of Britton in the bottom of the 9th?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 31, 2008 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

ZERO

It’s going to be old reliable instead – Farnsworth. That is, the Twins are relying on him coming into the game so they can get score they’re run and go home.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

What's a word

that means disappointment and disgust at the same time?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 31, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Farnsworth

I think that pretty much covers it.

It would be comical if it wasn’t so moronic the way they are treating Britton. Hey, I’m not saying the guy is the answer to their problems – but the guy is here for a reason.

Let him try to get hitters out.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

And as though

Mourneau didn’t get a good enough look at Farny’s stuff last night!

Negativity!

It’s turning fellas. Yup it’s Farnsworth. We’ ll see.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

I try to stay positive

but when it comes to Kyle Farnsworth, I make an exception.

Ditto

We’ve been through this so many times over the past 3 years. I saw so much of him with the Cubs that I nearly cried the day the Yanks signed him.

They're Starting

...to play topgether as a team. You can feel it. I can.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

Nathan's out?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 31, 2008 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

He's out

Reyes in. That’s good news.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

So who pitches the 10th? Hawkins again?

Reminds me of Sean Henn last season. They went to him twice within a week last season in extra innings and he served it up both games.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Ohlendorf to pitch the 10th.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Means

we have to score now.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 31, 2008 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Reyes looks like Eddie Guardado and Rich Garces mated and had a child together.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

I Would

...stay with Farnsworth in a tie. Ohlendorf with a lead. Nice base running.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Sigh....

Let’s hope Matsui shows his Godzilla power and knocks one outta there.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Karstens hurt his groin again according to Chad Jennings. I wonder who the long man on Tuesday is going to be now?

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

Another

...bad call by Girardi.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 10:49 PM EDT reply actions

Which call?

The pitching change or the pick off by A-Rod?

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Truthfully...

I would feel no better with Hawkins on the mound. Who knows what the deal is with their refusal to use Britton.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Ohlendorf is not right mechanically. Everything he usually throws is down, but lately, everything has been up.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

Outside of the almost gopher ball

Ohlendorf had nasty stuff that inning. Location is his problem right now.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Wanted

...One manager for a major league team that plays in the American League east. I would have stayed with Farnsworth for that inning.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 10:58 PM EDT reply actions

You know

I hear there’s this really great pitcher on the Yankees. They call him Rivera or something like that. I wish they’d let him pitch in situations where to allow a single run is to lose the game…

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 31, 2008 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

0-5?

Tough performs by Ohly. Where’d I put my Tums?

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 31, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He didn’t make it look easy by any means, but Ohlendorf did the job.

Maybe this will help turn him around.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

Ha ha...

Hawkins to pitch the next inning. Well, it was fun while it lasted.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

How Deep

...are we? This one is going long. Girardi should have stuck with Farnsworth for one more. He was pitching well. Be nice if Ohlendorf was coming in this inning. Hawkins now. Oh Boy, can’t wait.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

random night game on saturday

goes into extras, followed by a day game. radical.

by seanp23 on May 31, 2008 11:27 PM EDT reply actions

Don't worry though

Since the series goes to Monday, the Sunday afternoon game isn’t a getaway game. Play at 7 in Minneapolis, and the next day at 7 in New York.

Press One

...for English; 2 for Latin…

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

The Bats

...are alive. Saved Girardi’s butt tonight.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

Awesome

Big win tonight. Kinda have the “they stole this one” feeling to it – even though they had the 3-run lead in the middle innings.

I’ve gotta admit, I didn’t expect them to win this game.

by anaconda on May 31, 2008 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

I

...fully expected them to win, til Girardi pulled a good middle releiver for short one. I was shocked. Yet they survived. Girardi is suspect, but this team is starting to thrive.

by whollycow on May 31, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

i think

the more outings they can get from Farnsworth without debilitating homeruns/etc the better.
