PREGAME NOTES

  • Pete Abe reports the most shocking news of the day - Chris Britton has once again returned from Scranton to take Kennedy's place on the roster.
  • Pete also notes that Kennedy's MRI revealed bursitis under the scapular, which can be controlled with meds.  Kennedy could begin throwing again [for Scranton] in a week.
  • Joba Chamberlain is schedule to throw 50-55 pitches tonight and will finish his night in a side session if he doesn't reach that mark in the game.
  • Andy Pettitte is a lifetime 23-6, 3.77 ERA, 1.44 WHIP in 35 games (33 starts) against the Yanks, including 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.57 WHIP in one start in 2008.
  • Jeremy Guthrie is a lifetime 1-0, 4.74 ERA, 1.53 WHIP in 4 games (3 starts) against the Yanks.

Can't have that

Another bad AB by Jeter in the 3rd. I really believe there’s something up with him because he’s just not playing like Jeter.

I think his hand might be still bothering him. Still a broken Jeter is better than anything else.

I guess they now need to ride Giambi until his wheels fall off.

No doubt about it

We gotta cut Giambi. He can’t hit anymore!

I think Melky has improved

the routes he takes to those balls.

I am glad he’s out there!

Me too. Glad he doesn’t share the same wall-phobia as Abreu.

I hadn't heard that tidbit about Jeter until now

Last night was the first time in 10 years that he got picked off 2nd base.

by anaconda on May 28, 2008 8:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm of the opinion

that he’s among the best (if not the best) baserunner in baseball. He’s got a great SB%, runs aggressively first to third and second to home, but rarely gets thrown out.

But that sounds like semantic thing- if the runner starts toward second it’s a CS not a pickoff.

No doubt about it

Jeter is probably the best Yankee base runner they’ve had in a long, long time. His pal, Jorge Posada, is another story.

Man what an asset Joba has.

To be able to sit next to Mo and pick his brain is priceless.

come on Joba

He settled down

nicely. 28 pitches. Do you put Mo in, and send Joba back to the pen to finish throwing like a Spring Training game?

Joba

This doesn’t make any sense to me.

I get that in order to become a starter he has to build up his arm strength and slowly raise his pitch counts per outing.

But the other part to preparing to be a starter, and to me its a big part, is changing your approach. Right now Joba is still pitching like a relief pitcher. Other than making him a bit stronger, a night like tonight does zero to help him transition to a starter. He’s just using his two best pitches to protect a one run lead – as he should.

This alleged “plan” is so screwy I don’t know what the solution is, but this is completely retarded to me. We’re losing the ability to use him a few times a week to nail down games and we’re not helping him become a starter all that much.

Once he got to this point – where he could throw 50 pitches, it no longer makes sense to use him at the end of a game. I would have let him pitch the first three innings of a game Rasner was due to start. That way he could face a few hitters twice, use all his pitches, etc…..

I’ll stop rambling now.

Not Rasner's game!

Kennedy’s. He’s hurt anyway

Except

IPK cried like Mussina when he came out of the pen during that rain game in Kansas City. He clearly was affected by it. Rasner is better suited for it.

You let Joba start a game and throw until he hits his pitch count. If its the middle of an inning you let Hawkins or whoever finish off the inning. Then Rasner starts off a clean inning and goes however long he can.

Kennedy doesn't come out of the pen

He’s hurt
We need a spot start
Give it to Joba, let the pen finish

Gotcha

You’re talking about the next Joba appearance, I was talking about this one.

Problem with using Joba to start a game as though he were in the rotation is that there would be no long reliever to come in for him if he hits his ceiling early (I’m about done with Ohlendorf for a while). I think they would need to make a roster move and have a long reliever from Scranton available.

Joba throwing pitches in the bullpen is STUPID. Worst. plan. ever.

It’s a long shot… let’s hope one of the Yankees brass sneaks a peek at PA and reads your post. Very nice.

Wait a minute. Who will fill the 5th spot? I had enough of Igawa.

Someone in Scranton

This time around they don’t have to worry about it because of the off day, but my guess is they’ll use five “starters” anyway.

Not sure what Karstens’ status is, but if he’s not ready someone like him should be summoned to enter the game when Joba is done. After one or two more times (feels rushed to me), I think the “plan” is that Joba will be ready to be a fully functioning starter.

I understand what you're saying

I’ll go through some other Yankee starts and see if I can find some examples of similar pitch selection…

Let me shock you for a second...

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don’t think they are approaching this the right way. He’s airing it out on those fastballs and not pacing himself.

And, like you said, he’s not using his curve ball or change – which is supposed to be a big part of this process.

I want to see Joba as a starter as much as anyone. But I don’t think they are doing this the right way.

It might be better if someone like Rasner to come out of the pen after Joba pitches the first 3 or 4 IP.
