PREGAME NOTES
- Tonight the Yankees will face a lefty starter for the 17th time in their last 28 games.
- Melky Cabrera is getting the night off after going 5 for 31 over his last 9 games and his average is way down to .249.
- Not sure I understand the Joe Girardi's logic to use Wilson Betemit (a very weak right-handed hitter) against the lefties. I know he wants to get him ABs but you would think a Northwestern grad would realize this is a bit counterproductive.
- Ian Kennedy is a lifetime 0-1, 5.19 ERA, 2.08 WHIP in 2 starts against the Orioles, including his best outing of the season on May 22.
- Brian Burres is a lifetime 2-2, 3.12 ERA, 1.27 WHIP in 5 starts against the Yanks.
- Yankees' career numbers vs. Burres can be viewed here. Orioles' career numbers vs. Kennedy can be viewed here.

Good news regarding Posada
Kim Jones stated via Joe Girardi that Posada could return in a week if he has no setbacks. He will not be throwing until Thursday.

Well,
the offense wakes up and gives him a sizable lead, and goes out and gives it back. The quintessence of bad pitching.

If Kennedy is out of action for any length of time – I guess that takes care of the six-man rotation argument.

The good thing is that they have treaded water during the toughest stretch of the season and with all the injuries they’ve had.
Now, A-Rod is back and Posada will be back next week. And the team is going to be facing the easiest stretch of the season over the next 26 games.

This injury to Kennedy – “Slight strain in his right lat muscle” – is going to open speculation that Joba could make his first start as early as next week.
I’m not sure they should push this transition. Obviously, those guys know better than I do about stretching pitchers out – but I’d give Joba more time to make this transition. This progression is way too fast.
by anaconda on May 27, 2008 9:01 PM EDT 0 recs
i would agree
i would have at least like to have seen two more out the pen from him.. get him up to 50.. then 70.. then throw him out there…
ideally two fifty pitch outings before increaing his workload would be great… but doesn’t look like that is gonna happen

Some of The Decisions
...seem first year, others don’t bode as well. How do you let Moose pitch to Ramirez with first open in that second series after the first series? That was stupid. Flat out stupid. Kind of sets a tone. Almost seems like there’s a dougout struggle happening.
by whollycow on May 27, 2008 9:18 PM EDT 0 recs
If we’re going to kill or dismiss managers who make mistakes – there would be no more managers.
It wouldn’t make any sense to make another managerial change. Give Girardi three years and see how the team responds.

But this guy will test Hank’s resolve. I agree, no choice now, but I’m not getting any younger and this is looking a lot like the 80’s. A LOT like the 80’s.

Hank is not the only guy who runs the team
He just has the biggest mouth. Hal Steinbrenner has just as much power as Hank does – but doesn’t open his mouth to say stupid things as Hank does so regularly.
People often overlook Hal’s power because Hank’s big mouth overshadows him.

...seeing what I’m seeing. I hope you’re right. I really do. This isn’t a team. They’re not playing as a team. I hope it comes together, but there’s more to this.
by whollycow on May 27, 2008 9:34 PM EDT 0 recs
That's true
I see the big picture. You’re looking at the first 50 games of 2008.
It’s obvious the organization has taken a different approach with the kids and the non-Santana trade – building a foundation of youth for the future.
Girardi is part of that foundation. And they aren’t going to fire him anytime soon.

Abreu actually found home plate with a throw. Nice job.
When Jason Giambi is a much better defender than you, then its time to never, EVER, play first base again. Betemit is awful. When he catches the ball it’s an accident.

Also keep in mind...
that it was Cashman and Hal who decided against trading for Santana. If it was entirely up to Hank – the Santana deal would have been made.
This is part of the reason why Hank’s power is exaggerated a bit. He’s not the guy making every decision. Hal has equal partnership in this thing.
