PREGAME NOTES:

  • Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to pitch in relief (and throw 40-50 pitches) in order to continue stretching out his arm for starting duties.  According to Tyler Kepner, Joe Girardi says the Yanks could go to a six-man rotation once Chamberlain is ready to start.
  • According to Chad Jennings, speculation is mounting that the Morgan Ensberg experiment is about to come to an end.  With Wilson Betemit coming off the DL within a few days and Jason Lane now taking reps at 1B, rumor has it that Alberto Gonzalez will be sent back to Scranton and Lane will replace Ensberg on the major league roster.
  • Carlos Silva is a lifetime 1-3, 9.62 ERA, 1.97 WHIP in 5 starts against the Yanks, including an 8-2 drubbing on May 4.
  • Mike Mussina is a lifetime 18-5, 3.68 ERA, 1.19 WHIP in 28 games (27 starts) against the Mariners, including a 6-1 victory over King Felix on May 3.  Moose is 7-0, 3.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP in 9 games (8 starts) against them since August of 2001.
  • Yankees' career numbers vs. Silva can be viewed here.  Mariners career numbers vs. Mussina can be viewed here.

Nice quick inning for Moose. Too bad I can’t watch it because of the FOX blackout.

Man, that Rodriguez guy can hit

Matsui getting hot again. He had been slumping for a good week or so.

He goes the other way!

I get the feeling that Carlos Silva doesn’t scare the Yankee hitters.

damn

Moose was due for some homers, but I’d hoped they’d be solos…

That ain’t good. Your team scores 4 runs for him and he gives them right back the next inning.

I really like Giambi

when they throw him meatballs.

Knowing their luck, Giambi is going to get hurt now that he’s hitting.

I wonder if 2 scoreless innings is too much to ask from Moose right now.

by anaconda on May 24, 2008 2:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's reasonable.

His location has been spotty, but on Gameday the movement looks good.

Moose

Nobody else will say it, so I will: Mussina is washed up! I argued for him as a middle reliever last year and you guys said I was crazy. Torre couldn’t stand to relieve the guy, I said get rid of Torre, you guys said I was crazy. Now we got a great mgr – but he can’t bring himself to relieve Moose. What’s the guy got on the Yanks that they’re afraid of him? Let him take a vacation with Pavano! Jeesh. C’mon in Joba!!

Was Moose washed up

when he won 5 straight games for this team?

by anaconda on May 24, 2008 2:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not crazy

But Moose got through 5- a mistake to Vidro.

Mussina has been significantly better than Pettitte- if Moose is washed up, then we need to eat Pettitte’s 16 million and cut him…

Molina now hitting .198 on the season.

As I said in my post this morning

I’m listening to any and all offers involving a catcher.

Well, when Posada comes back, I’m going to assume they are going to keep three catchers for awhile.

I love Molina as the backup – he’s just not an everyday catcher.

Speaking of your post...

I heard Cashman say the other day on Michael Kay’s radio show that Brett Gardner won’t be called up anytime soon because he’s left handed and Cashman doesn’t think it makes sense to sit a lefty like Damon or Matsui for another one.

He also added that if the team needs a “speed guy” – Ramon Castro would be the first guy called up, not Gardner.

Yanks

do have a lot of spare parts.

I know Joba was just unbelievable last season. But is it me or is he not throwing nearly as many strikes as he did last season?

by anaconda on May 24, 2008 2:51 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think you're right

But I think there are two parts to the explanation:
1) Joba was too supernatural last season- even as great as his control is, he couldn’t maintain last year’s success rate,
2) Joba’s using his curve and his change more- he doesn’t have the control of those that he has of the fastball and slider.

Good points

I do think using his other pitches has something to do with it. But I also think that it could be because he hasn’t been pitching much this season and can’t always get into a rhythm after not pitching for several days.

Last season, he had logged quite a few innings and his arm was in peak condition when the Yanks promoted him.

I guess

everyone is working on going the other way.

Abreu has 6 homers already? Working quietly.

Maybe I shouldn’t get too encouraged since it’s happening against Seattle but perhaps this team really has turned the corner – especially offensively.

We saw last year

It doesn’t matter who you beat. Just win ball games and you’re in the postseason.
