Cashman's future

is now all about depth. Even if Joba's move to the rotation gives us the semblance of a starting 5, Phil and IPK are definitely looking more like reclamation projects in 2008. Meaning: Cashman's youth movement needs to produce some unlikely heroes. Otherwise, the big non-deal last winter will probably get him canned.

Jscape, is there anybody in the pipeline beyond Rasner that could be helpful? With Horne on the DL, does White look like the best candidate to come up next?

Kei Igawa

Hard as it may be to swallow, looking at the Scranton pitching stats makes you think Igawa is next in line.

Does that make anyone want to be a little more patient?

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Seriously

I was looking at the Scranton starters and noticed that Igawa was probably the next in-line, even though his ERA is hovering around a # 3 starter there. I would guess that the FO is not going to spend a whole lot of time letting him audition for the third time.

I'm not sure

they’d go to Igawa yet. There’s a PR side of this as well as a baseball side.

Well

Horne hasn’t pitched since April 10th, when he came out of the game with a strained bicep. The Yanks said he’d be out a week- and we haven’t heard from him in a month. I take this as a sign that the Yanks’ reticence over injuries comes from the top- either from Cash or from the Brothers Stein.

My next choice is Daniel McCutchen- but he’s only at AA. Dominant there (28H+8BB in 38.2IP, with 39K), though he had his worst start of the season last night, 10H+1BB in 7IP. If the Yanks are going to skip IPK’s next start (I decision I’d reserve until we see Rasner pitch), I’d move McCutchen up to AAA for an audition.

At AAA, Jeff Marquez has been the hot hand the last two times through the rotation- 11IP, 6H, 2BB. You can’t let his ERA (7.00) scare you too much, it’s largely from a bad season opener (8ER/4IP). The bad news is that his trip to the mound last Sunday was his first trip into the 6th inning this season. I don’t know if that’s pitch count or fatigue.

Steven White has been good enough 26H+11BB in 27.2IP to deserve a glance. Like Marquez, he’s trying to pull his numbers back down after a bad start in early April (4IP, 11H, 1BB, 6ER).

So, I see a potential quality fix that’s a little farther away from the bigs, and a few guys who could win a game in a spot start whom I wouldn’t want to overexpose.

Reclamation Projects?

C’mon guys. IPK and Hughes will work it out. Give them alittle time. I don’t like the idea of Igawa or Rasner coming up. I think at this point, I might bring in Joba to the rotation—or at least stretching him out. My thought is if we are getting thumped every night, there’s no point to bringing him in the 7th or 8th innings.

Given the circumstances we’ve been handed thus far, bring him up.

I don't think

the reclamation project line was in this thread.

I agree with you, it’s still early. And it’s still too early to move Joba, unless you’re willing to shut him down September 1. End of June/Start of July for Joba in the rotation.

I think

Part of his point is that now because of this injury, even if Hughes does turn it around he will have to be capped again next year, couple that with Joba’s innings cap, IPK’s ineffectiveness, Pettitte’s contract status, and you’ve got a whole mess of rotation issues.

I think we (and they) were kind of hoping Phil and to a lesser extent IPK would be horses next year . That won’t be the case with Phil, and who knows with IPK.

And I agree, Cashman is toast if IPK continues to put up stinkbombs and no one in Scranton comes to the rescue.

Maybe

He’s thrown 22 innings. Even if he doesn’t pitch until the All Star Break, there’s still time for him to throw around 100 innings. I don’t know how they calculate injury time/ rehab into that inning cap. It’s certainly not good.

I still think that

IPK and Hughes will work out as well, but I also think that they are both reclamation projects. And by that, I mean Eiland et al need to go back a step or two in their development process. Which is to say, view the boys strategically (i.e., do we send them down or to the bullpen, or do we skip a start), rather than tactically (i.e., do we work on mechanics for the heater, let them work out of trouble in a 1-run 6th inning, etc.)

I think their ineffectiveness (and Hughes’ injury) has to send the brass back to the drawing board a bit.

You should've been a cheerleader

They know nothing about sports but continue to cheer their heros on. IPK and Hughes will work it out. Looking forward to Ranser keeping IPK in the minors where he belongs.

Pavano?

he’s supposed to be ready to pitch again around midseason, no? the way things are going, he might just have the opportunity to contribute down the stretch. as frightening as it is for me to type these words. but it would be nice to get a tiny bit of return on that investment.

No

Late August if everything goes perfectly. No matter how bad things are, there’s no way the Yanks give him a chance to showcase himself for the offseason.

I also

don’t see Carl in any big hurry to help the team.

I’m sure he’d rather have teams bid on him blindly next year as opposed to watching him get creamed a few times this summer/fall.

They need to find a Chacon or a Small. Come to think of it the actual Chacon might not be a completely terrible idea.

Is it legal to start a Robot?

Can we throw a pitching machine on the mound, and call it a day?

Now that you mention it

I bet Johnny 5 could get some serious movement on his pitches. His natural grip would amount to scuffing the ball, though, so I he’d probably get ejected pretty quickly.

Pavano

As I said on another post today, McCutchen should be brought up over Igawa. Mccutchen is 26 and ready to go. He is the bulldog the Yankees need.

Regarding Pavano: BJ Ryan had the same surgery last year and he already has 3 saves this seasonwith a 0.00 ERA. Some people want it more than others, but Pavano is employed by the Yankees. So…

The Yanks should keep Pavano on his current throwing program, work him up soon with a minor league rehab stint and put him in major league games by July. Then throw him, good or bad, win or lose, until his arm completely falls off so he can’t sign next year for anybody.

Then, the Yankees will have received their $40 million worth.

If Pavano declines this…then sue him for the money that he has taken.

The Yanks

could also sign Harry Potter to magically get hitters out.

Both scenarios have the same probability of actually happening.

Paging Tyler Clippard...Paging Tyler Clippard...

It’s deja vu all over again…Another year and yet another year of digging for mushrooms in the field of turds the Yankees call a minor league pitching system…Where is the STOCKPILE of healthy/talented (!!!) arms hooha we’ve been fed for two years running? Where is the young arm that was going to move to the front of the rotation and make folks forget the likes of Mussina, Rasner, Clippard et al…? I got to hand it to Cashman: He’s a PR genius - he fed the NY media and the fans (You know who you are…) a load of fantasy by proclaiming he had unlocked the secret of discovering youthful pitching talent and even hoodwinked Hank into bypassing a readily available Johan Santana for what we’ve got now in the likes of Phil Hughes and IPK. Good grief: These two are destined for the Witness Relocation Program and an innings eater and proven commodity in the form of Santana ends up cashing Fred Wilpon’s checks - say what you want (And you will!) but a healthy “with-it” George Steinbrenner would have mercifully put the Brian Cashman era out of its misery and spared no expense to bring in a Johan Santana to COMPLIMENT a HUGE investment in A-Rod…
