Bad defense by

Gonzalez that first half inning. Let’s hope he makes up for it at the plate.

What happened?

My computer buffer wasn’t working so I didn’t catch it.

He misjudged a foul ball and let it drop and almost cut off Jeter on a routine ground ball to short.

and at the opposite end of the spectrum there is Cano.

I’m glad to see Girardi trying something new this series and letting the lefties play against the lefties.

Obviously, the righties haven’t done the job (Ensberg, and Duncan) so it was time to let the regulars take their hacks.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 8:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe the old Jeter is coming back.

He worked a walk and now stole 2B. Haven’t seen much of that at all this season.

Damn

That stolen base by Jeter in the 1st was just the 13th of the season for the Yanks – tied for fewest in the AL with the ChiSox.

Hard to believe, but that was Jeter’s first SB attempt since Opening Day.

I hope the yankees

get some runs for Wang tonight. He should not have that blemish on his record.

Wang looking sharp

Only 26 pitches thru 3 IP—19 strikes

Good

we need a break

Nice play by Giambi

but he needs to make a better throw than that. He had time.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh blurgh.

We need our bats to wake up if we’re going to have a chance.

by NYinCalifornia on May 18, 2008 9:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was a huge break

But it will be all for naught if they don’t start scoring runs.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

is there a reason

why part of the pole is black?

by seanp23 on May 18, 2008 9:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No legitimate reason

But it worked in the Yanks favor.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is why I think instant replay should be implemented in baseball. In the time it takes us to see a replay, they could make the correct call on the field.

I know baseball purists are against it, but that should not have happened to the Mets. The only reason I could see why instant replay hasn’t been considered, would be that it would take away the manager/umpire altercations.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ehhh

Its a slippery slope though. Then do you get K-Zone for all games and start questioning balls and strikes? Obviously Ive taken it to its absurd end, but I think its a legitimate point. Like with football, it is frustrating to have some calls/types of plays subject to instant replay and others not because they are “judgment calls.” To an extent, all calls made by all officials are “judgment” calls. Shit happens, its a long season.

by seanp23 on May 18, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand your point

but I’m one of those purists who is against Instant Replay in MLB.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't know that but

let me ask you, was that a pure call? I would think if you were a baseball purist, (not in the old-fashioned sense) you would like the correct call to be made.

Just curious.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To say that instant replay

always gets the call right would be a fallacy. How many times have you seen a call not overturned that you know probably should be because there is not “conclusive video evidence”? You are never going to get all the calls correct.

by seanp23 on May 18, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

But this one was obvious in lieu of the replay.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok but,

just because one play would be easy does not mean replay in baseball would be good or worth the trade off of time vs. impact of incorrect calls made correct.

by seanp23 on May 18, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Human error is part of the game, too

I don’t want winners and losers to be determined by the umpires, but the game has survived just fine for 100 years without IR.

I’m a fan of some of the innovations the last several years. I’m just not a fan of IR.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well that sure was a collective human error.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bad calls happen. But bad calls happen with IR as well.

We should note that umpires do make the right call most of the time.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also... sorry for beating the proverbial deadhorse,

but let’s just say the yankees come back and the mets lose on account of those runs? The game would be then determined by the umpires.

Ok I’m done.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No matter how many innovations you make

the game will never be perfect. And that’s the truth.

I want to keep the game as traditional as possible.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cano caught a break

He would have been out by 5 feet if the throw was decent.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sigh

A run there would have been nice. Abreu with a horrific AB.

Oooh

did you hear that? I could buy the Yankees for….. one million dollars! — Peter Gammons (ESPN)

Gammons gets a pass in my book

I’m in the minority here, but I love Gammons. The guy knows his baseball.

but Morgan and Miller corrected him.

I’m pretty sure he said million. I still thought it was funny.

Gammons:

I like how they made Hank out to be a real moron

with the music and the images floating around the screen. All they needed was have him wearing a dunce cap or clown makeup and they would’ve had him pegged perfectly.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 10:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

In my opinion, ESPN as of late during broadcasts,

have taken a page from FOX in terms of showing the darker side of baseball.

It’s a turn for the worst if you ask me.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True...

but baseball has had a lot of darkness the last year or two.

I happen to think their portrayal of Hank was dead on. The guy is a clown. It’s a shame Hal can’t do it all by himself.

In unrelated news...

The director of the new Get Smart movie could not have found a better actor than Steve Carell to play the Maxwell Smart role.

Kudos to him.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 10:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Big Steve Carell fan here.

I’m sure it was a clear cut decision. He just fits the role.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No question

It’s a no brainer.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just curious

if they’re gonna play Gonzalez at 3B, why the hell is Ensberg on the team?

Gonzalez has a good glove, but he’s clueless at third. He’s botched two popups and should have made the play on the grounder during Wang’s bad inning.

I like AGon as a back up to Cano and Jeter. I don’t understand why he’s at third.

I think Ensberg or Duncan is getting the boot on Tuesday

Probably Duncan again since he still has options left. I was a fan of the Ensberg signing, but he clearly hasn’t worked out very well.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think

Britton will go down. They have too many pitchers.

I could Ensberg or Duncan going when the WB comes back. He was starting to hit before he hurt himself.

Good point

Britton is basically the driver of the Scranton shuttle bus crew. You’re right that he may get the boot instead.

Im not the biggest reggie guy

but can we relax with the “Reggie Jackson-type homerun by Ryan Church” stuff, guys?

Ditto

I’ve never been the biggest Reggie fan myself.

Don't know what took so long

for Girardi to take Wang out. It’s not like the pen won’t get a day off tomorrow.

by bronxbound on May 18, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Abreu = horrid

I’ve said this before but Matsui is a better outfielder than him, which isn’t saying much.

Matsui would have charged that ball and quickly thrown a strike home. Abreu’s arm is stronger but it’s NEVER accurate. Then there’s the whole wall thing.

Let Abreu walk after this season. I’ve been saying that since the beginning of the season.

by anaconda on May 18, 2008 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree too.

He isn’t homering as much as I thought he would here. I would miss his hustle on the base paths though.
