PREGAME NOTES:

  • Pete Abe reports that A-Rod is now running at "90 percent" and his MRI revealed a Grade 1 tear in his quad, improving from a Grade 2 a couple of weeks ago.  A-Rod eyes a return to the lineup next Tuesday at the Stadium, which can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned.
  • Chien-Ming Wang is a lifetime 7-4, 3.53 ERA, 1.22 WHIP in 12 starts against the Rays, including a 2-0 victory at the Stadium on April 6.
  • Edwin Jackson is a lifetime 2-2, 5.40 ERA, 1.58 WHIP in 9 games (5 starts) against the Yanks.  He is 1-1, 4.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP in two starts against them in 2008.
  • Yanks career numbers vs. Jackson can be viewed here.  Rays career numbers vs. Wang can be viewed here.
  • For those of you keeping tabs on the TJ kids, the always astute Chad Jennings reports that J.B. Cox has been promoted to Triple-A Scranton and Mark Melancon has been promoted to Double-A Trenton.  Also, Pete Abe reported last night that Humberto Sanchez is now throwing off the mound and is scheduled to get into a game around June 10.

hmm

is a rally afoot?

all things considered

I’m surprised how tough the Yanks have been. Jorge and Alex are the righty power of this team, and they’ve still hovered around .500 without them. Throw in the pitching problems and it could be a lot worse.

I agree.

With all the injuries (once again) starting out of the gate, I am still confident in this team despite of the poor offense. It should be better than this.

I really hope they don't trade Matsui.

There has to be another way for us to get some pitching.

Eric Milton is unsigned

as are...

two former Atlanta pitchers: Russ Ortiz and John Thomson. Also there is always the Jeff Weaver Experience 2.0

I think the Yanks will be one of those teams giving Freddy Garcia a look, but who knows.

What's with Wang today?

From the box score, I keep seeing him get a couple quick strikes, and then get hit?

by NYinCalifornia on May 13, 2008 8:35 PM EDT   0 recs

He doesn't have his best stuff today

but it’s hard to scoff at 1 run in 5 IP. The offense needs to start helping him out.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 8:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm just wondering

because I can’t see the game, but it just keeps popping up on my computer; 2 strikes, and then all of a sudden a hit comes up. Our bats really need to wake up—no matter how good the pitching is, if we can’t score, we can’t win…

by NYinCalifornia on May 13, 2008 8:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Indeed

This team really needs A-Rod back and pronto.

Wang hasn’t been bad, but his command tonight isn’t what we’re used to with him.

Abreu really needs to get this run in.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 8:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And...

with two batters, we still can’t get the job done.

Intro music

I dig some of the Rays’ choices for intro music:

Voodoo Child – B.J. Upton

Theme from Shaft – Cliff Floyd

Good Times, Bad Times – Eric Hinske

Pretty soon Kevin Long

will be the target of criticism. I can’t believe he has flown under the radar for this “Long.”

pun intended.

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 8:59 PM EDT   0 recs

Seriously.

I feel like we’re making some of these pitchers look better than they really are.

by NYinCalifornia on May 13, 2008 9:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Uh Oh

Jackson screamed after he struck out Duncan. I see a new trend forming. Someone alert the media.

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 9:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

How is this Long's fault?

Not many offenses are going to be able to overcome losing the top player in the game and one of the top catchers at the same time.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 9:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's not his fault per say...

But he obviously isn’t doing a good job of helping our struggling hitters. Whether it be by watching video or seen by the naked eye, he should be able to point out mechanical mistakes and try to correct them.

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 9:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Hitters struggle....

it’s inevitable. The problem is that the team has lost two of it’s best players at the same time and several others are struggling at the same time.

That’s not a good combo and I don’t know exactly what Long is supposed to do to overcome that. A hitting coach can only do so much.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 9:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Valid point

about those two things happening at the same time. My point is that Kevin Long really hasn’t helped much in the two years he has been here. Agreed?

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 9:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No...

If you’re gonna rip Long when the Yanks’ offense is struggling then you’ve got to give him credit and be consistent when the Yanks offense rolls.

They scored 968 runs last season. The next closest team was Philly with 892.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 9:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

First of all I didn't rip Long.

I only stated he is not helping our hitters overcome their struggles. That is what he is there for. He needs to see and correct what they can’t see themselves. These guys already know how to hit, they made it to the big leagues.

I am aware of how many runs we scored last year, and I believe our offense did that on their own accord. My opinion of course.

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 9:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We’re all entitled to our opinions, but it’s tough to make the argument about Long because we have no idea what he does with the hitters behind the scenes and what advice he gives them.

I don’t know, I guess if you were to tell me I’m not doing my job, I’d interpret that as ripping me. I say “to-may-toe” you say “to-mah-toe.”

I’m not one to play both sides of the fence here. If you are going to criticize him when they struggle, you should give him credit when they are rolling.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 10:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

True.

Maybe if the media would focus more on player/coach interactions instead of who is showing up who with fist-pumps and other gestures, I would be more informed.

Applying your logic then, I can’t commend Long on a job well done for the amount of runs we scored last year.

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 10:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

One more thing,

I never stated my opinion as fact. It is pure speculation.

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 10:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It’s all speculation. None of us know what happens behind the scenes. But people tend to point fingers all over the place when a team is struggling.

We can agree to disagree on this particular issue. This would be a boring place if we all agreed on everything.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 10:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Also...

A-Rod attributed some of his success last season to a few mechanical adjustments while working with Long.

A-Rod seems to think Long helped him a lot, so who am I to tell him he’s a liar.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 9:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I wasn't aware that he

attributed Kevin for helping him out of his slump. In fact, I haven’t heard any of our hitters crediting him for getting them out of their slumps.

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 10:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Duncan

Nitpicking, but I’m not sure I would have gone with Duncan there.

Duncan hasn’t hit at all, and Ensberg has been just as bad. Gonzalez had some good hacks against Jackson, I might have left A-Gon in. But if a pinch hitter was really what he wanted to do, why not use the guy who would be going in to play 3rd anyway? Can you really say Duncan had a better chance than Ensberg??

It’s a short bench and a 1-0 game. He kinda burned a player for no reason there. Not a big deal but…..

by matthaggs on May 13, 2008 9:25 PM EDT   0 recs

I tend to agree

Duncan and Ensberg are cold and sitting on the bench. Gonzalez had two hits yesterday and hit the ball hard a couple of times today. I would have also stuck with Gonzalez there.

I finally found a way to stream games

(I’m a little technologically challenged).

by NYinCalifornia on May 13, 2008 9:26 PM EDT   0 recs

Go download TVants

And then you can find links to stream it at http://www2.myp2p.eu/index.php?part=sports

The ESPN Taiwan streams are the best, they just take the YES broadcast, except they black out the broadcasters. The KuSports one usually takes the local broadcast, and they have Chinese broadcasters.

by NYinCalifornia on May 13, 2008 9:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

at least we’re pitching well tonight.

by docgonzo on May 13, 2008 9:31 PM EDT   0 recs

Joba

This might be the first time I’ve ever seen him come into the game with the Yanks down.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 9:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes.

It’s kind of funny now, I’m streaming and it’s lagging, Matsui just came up to plate.

by NYinCalifornia on May 13, 2008 9:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Good news

Red Sox lost.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 10:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Oooh

I think Matsui was safe on the unwritten rule of “tie goes to the runner.”

by bronxbound on May 13, 2008 10:37 PM EDT   0 recs

J.B. Cox threw a scoreless inning tonight in his debut for Scranton. I bet we see him in the Bronx at some point if he continues to progress.

by anaconda on May 13, 2008 10:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Oh that hurt. That hurt.

by NYinCalifornia on May 13, 2008 10:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Horrible throw by Molina

They had Gomes dead to rights at second base.

Balls.
