PREGAME NOTES:

  • Ian Kennedy pitched his one inning for Scranton this afternoon and is already out of the game (His line:  1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER -- 12 pitches, 7 strikes).  Kennedy is now slated to return to the rotation on Thursday against Tampa, contrary to the initial erroneous report by one George King.
  • Pete Abe reports that A-Rod's MRI has revealed that his quad injury is not healed enough to start playing rehab games.  He will not be activated this week and is officially OUT for the Mets' series.  Okay, that sucks.
  • The Yankee bullpen has been outstanding of late compiling a 1.05 ERA with an 0.70 WHIP over their last 8 games (25.2 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, 7 BB, 17 K).  Keep in mind all three runs were given up by Joba Chamberlain with one swing of the bat by David Dellucci last Monday night.
  • Andy Pettitte is a lifetime 14-3, 3.62 ERA, 1.44 WHIP in 23 games (22 starts) against the Rays.  He is 1-1, 4.50 ERA, 1.83 WHIP in 2 starts against them in 2008.
  • Matt Garza is a lifetime 0-1, 6.75 ERA, 1.95 WHIP in 2 games (one start) against the Yanks.

The Rays swept the Angels?

Really? That happened?

How different would Kennedy's

starts have been if he were given those extra couple inches on either side of the plate

huge

it’s almost like the Ump’s have decided the Yank youth movement has to earn their corners, as stupid as that is.

a search on mlb.com

returns zero hits for Ques Tech or Questech

For a while

it seemed like the announcers were talking about it every day. I haven’t heard them mention it much lately. Is it just that I am missing Leiter’s days?

Garza

Haven’t seen much of Garza, but for tonight anyway, he seems to have the type of fastball we were led to believe Phil Hughes has.

Garza hasn’t topped 94 tonight (and has mostly lived between 88-92), but the ball seems to get on the hitters quicker than that, because they are taking some weak hacks.

He is also locating it well, another abiltiy Hughes has only shown intermittently.

Retracted

He showed it during spring training.

Last year post hamstring he lost it, then he lost it again after spring training this year.

Did he ever say when he first felt the rib injury?

thats what I was going to say

I think he started throwing harder just to reach the same velocity, and that meant he lost some of his late movement.

Maybe

it’s Garza’s delivery, but his fastball just looks faster than the gun says it is.

I remember Giambi commenting after he faced Hughes in BP how quickly his fastball gets on top of you, and Phil – for various reasons – has only brought that pitch to the game mound a couple of times so far.

True

He brought that with him against Toronto in his first start and against the ChiSox when he was taken out after the rain delay.

That’s been it.

Molina is a jewel of a backup.

He is a great catch and throw guy.

Yeah

but if we would have kept Navarro, we would have a promising young guy just starting to reach his prime at the same time Jorge is slowing down and needing more days off.

He'd better be "clutch"

because his lines the last three years have been: .273/.354/.375; .254/.332/.354; .227/.286/.356/.

He’s 60 ABs into 2008, but I’ll bet he finished the year with an OPS+ around 80.

Ken Rosenthal

I read on another board that Rosenthal supposedly said on the FOX broadcast Saturday that the Yanks and Cubs were quietly talking about a Matsui for Ted Lilly deal.

I couldn’t watch the game because it was blacked out so can anyone confirm they heard this?

I don’t think there is an ounce of truth to that rumor. I know they’re kinda desperate for starting pitching, but that would be a moronic trade for the Yanks in every way. I want no part of Ted Lilly on this team.

by anaconda on May 12, 2008 9:10 PM EDT   0 recs

It depends on Money

and if there is a prospect or two involved. I could be talked into it.

But the Cubs have Soriano, Pie, and Fukudome. I assume Pie would go down; who would play center?

by jscape2000 on May 12, 2008 9:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I couldn't be talked into it

Lilly has 2 more years remaining on his deal after this season. I don’t want to see anymore dead weight in the rotation.

I’d much rather keep Matsui.

by anaconda on May 12, 2008 9:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh and

while I haven’t seen Lily pitch, so I don’t know if his velocity is back where it belongs, he’s been solid the last month- 35 baserunners in 32IP against 31K.

The thing I wouldn’t want would be Lily’s contract: 7 this year then 12 in 2009 and 2010. Plus he’s got some amount of no-trade, so he’d probably need an extension or extra money or something.

Me, too

In fact, this whole team scares me.

What about Randy Wolf for Matsui?

The Padres are in last place in the West with no offense and a gaping hole in left field.
Wolf is a lefty only signed for this season.
Matsui would be terrible defensively in that big ball park…

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 12, 2008 9:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Why trade Matsui?

He’s going to be the everyday DH next season anyways when Giambi is gone. Matsui could also play some RF every now and then at the Stadium. At least he’s not afraid of the wall.

The Yanks do have problems but I don’t think Matsui is one of them.

by anaconda on May 12, 2008 10:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The offense stinks.

Trading one of the two or maybe three guys who hasn’t stunk doesn’t make any sense.

The biggest problem

is no A-Rod. But that will be remedied Thursday, if all goes well. I really think he makes all the difference in this lineup.

by docgonzo on May 12, 2008 10:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe I should reconsider writing pregame notes

because I’m wondering how many people read them. A-Rod ain’t coming back this week.

by anaconda on May 12, 2008 10:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Would you be willing to trade

Damon?

Otherwise the conversation is likely to include some of the young arms that we want to put in the big leagues (which is why we’re after a guy signed for only one year). Also, I’d trade him because he has value for a team like San Diego that is getting less offense than we are.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on May 12, 2008 10:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Re: Damon

I’d be more willing to trade Damon but he has less trade value to another team. In all honesty, I don’t see Matsui or Damon as problems right now.

I’d have to see what kind of talent is available before I choose whether the Yanks should or shouldn’t make specific players available in a deal.

All I can say is that I wouldn’t want Lilly on this team if the Cubs were giving him away. He’s an average pitcher in AL and he’d be blocking the progression and development of one of the kids in 2009 and 2010.

Ted Lilly couldn’t be moved if he doesn’t work out. At least when you have young kids in that role, you can easily move him by sending him down and trying someone else.

People would inevitably talk about Lilly being dead weight the same way they talked about Moose last season.

Hey

I don’t know if it’s just my browser, but when a new comment appears while I’m on the board, ‘z’ isn’t taking me to it.
