HUGHES, OHLENDORF
Hughes Rating: D Curveball was all over the place although I know he'll have better days with it. What I didn't like as usual, was the fastball at 91 with very little movement. When is someone going to try to teach him a 2-seamer? Didn't make very much use of the changeup either. As for Ohlendorf he's a long way from being a competent replacement for Joba. He he has some pretty good stuff but it's a huge question mark that he puts it all together this year based on his past history.
The Yanks will have a tough game today, especially with Jeter, Posada, and Giambi out of the the lineup. I saw Greinke's first start against the Tigers and he had very good stuff. Let's see what happens with IPK and his flat, mid 80's fastball. The Royal's lineup is not a potent one to say the least, but Grudzielanek, Teahen, Guillen, Butler, Gordon, and Gload aren't easy outs.

OK I'll answer this one
You all know I don't like gloom. Still it's hard to find much to like in Tuesday's game.
I have to say a few things in Phil's defense. He had a poor outing. He didn't have his good stuff. He didn't have much control. But he did have a lot of things going against him.
1. Cold. IT was cold and he struggled with getting a grip on the ball. I saw several pitches which clearly slipped out of his hand.
2. Defense. The team as a whole looked awful. That tough second was a 5 out inning. That really wears on a guy with a short pitch limit.
3. Umpiring. That strike zone was more a ghost than a actual defineable area.
So, that is a lot of excuse making on a poor outing. Was there anything positive? He just kept hhis head and kept working. I like the kid. I'm really hoping for him to succeed.
This is also notice that I'm not a fan of AR and this hurrang at our pitching. Andy, you do not have anything to say that is beyond the obvious. I, in general, am not going to answer.

I was at work
so I missed Ohly's performance. Was he just using the sinker, or did he break out either the split or the slider, too?

I saw a number of good looking sliders
I am not sure I can recognize the split.
He came in the 4th with 2 on and no outs. Got an out then a DP on 8 pitches. He then had problems the next inning. No low strikes from the ump hurt both Hughes and O.

Well said....
I would also add this. This is the first time this season on the KC mound--away from home. It's something all pitchers have to adjust to and conquer, but it shouldn't be ignored.
That, coupled with the weather, the ump all played a role. I will add that Phil does have a cut-type fastball--I've seen it on several occasions. However, given the inconsistency of the umpire, the temps and his lack of control, Philly almost had to pour a meatball down the middle. No question he was getting pinched, but when your fingers are numb, and your frustration level is growing, you have limited options.

You left out
the fact that it was opening day for a Royals team with higher expectations then they've had in years.

Another positive
Despite the shaky pitching from Phil and O, they still gave up only 5 runs. In games past, the offense has been more than capable of putting up more than that to cover. Once the bats turn around - and they will - then outings like this one will end in a W, not an L.

Damon and Giambi
could be washed up and Posada is banged up. Don't be so sure this offense will look like it did in the second half of last season.
