Zack Greinke, RHP (1-0, 1.29 ERA) Pete Abe reports that Morgan Ensberg will indeed be placed on the 15-day DL after he "injured his left ankle" on Monday. Okay, I guess the team doesn't want to risk losing Ensberg by designating him for assignment, so they are placing him on the DL instead (ala Sean Henn). The Yanks are hitting just .190
(11-for-58) with runners in scoring position on the young season and have dropped to a 4-4 record out of the gate for the fifth consecutive season. Zack Greinke has not fared well against the Yanks during his young career (1-2, 8.22 ERA in 7 games). Ian Kennedy had a no-decision in his lone career start (5.0 IP, 2 ER) against the Royals on Sept 7, 2007. Yankees'
career numbers vs. Greinke can be viewed here. Royals' career numbers vs. Kennedy can be
viewed here. [Note by anaconda, 04/09/08 8:01 PM EDT ] It appears that all the beat writers were wrong because YES just reported that Shelley Duncan was optioned to Triple-A Scranton to make room for Gonzalez instead of placing Morgan Ensberg on the 15-day DL. [Note by anaconda, 04/09/08 8:08 PM EDT ]
Okay, this really isn't good. Ian Kennedy is a late scratch for tonight's game so Brian Bruney will make an emergency start. No idea what happened to Kennedy.
Wow. The injury bug is biting hard.
[Note by anaconda, 04/09/08 8:22 PM EDT ]
Ken Singleton just said on the YES broadcast that Kennedy is indeed ready to go tonight but they are holding him out until after the rain passes.
Gutsy move by Girardi.

Pete A
is reporting that Ensberg will be DL'd. Apparently he hurt himself playing first on Monday when he came into the game after Jeter got hurt.

I guess
it makes sense because it gets us the best players back sooner, but it really underscores Shelley and Ensberg's redundancy.

I'm not a panicky Yankee fan
but this game seems almost doomed from the get-go.
I just hope Kennedy couldn't get loose or something and that's the extent of it.

I know. right?
I have really been extolling the virtues of being patient in April but this just made me a little nuts. If Girardi is being cautious with Kennedy, I fully support that but this is a bit nervewracking.

like we face nothing but pitchers who throw strikes. Bannister was the exception last night but once he battled he settled down and threw strikes. We need an ugly pitcher for the bats to feast on like a weak Gazelle lol. WOoo Gonzalez 2b. Steal third.

Wickman
39 years old, 1.49 WHIP last year, 37K 21BB all in the NL.
He was in the AL from 2002-2006, never posted a WHIP below 1.43 exactly once.
You really want that on the team?
Hate Farnsworth all you want, but he's posted the same numbers Wickman would. He just walked his first batters of the year in a game that shouldn't even be played.
I'm sure.

In Girardi's defense
they had no business letting the game continue. You rarely see an infield that saturated without a delay.

Great game
For me to poop on.
Nice baserunning by Melky (did he go to Bernie's baserunning camp?)
Nice botch in LF by Matsui. Why is out he out there in the pouring rain? Why is he out there ever at this point?
Fantastic job by Farnsworth. Girardi's move might have worked if not for that jerk off (to paraphrase David Cone).
Is a 65 degree sunny day to much to ask for? Worst. weather. ever. Thank god they go to a dome on this trip.

Lots of folks questioned Torre about never bringing in Farnsworth with a.) men on base and b.) for multiple innings.
Girardi has tried both this year and he is 0 for 2.

Farnsworth
I made a similar point about Farnsworth the other day on the game thread:
Finally, we may want to file this under "Maybe Joe Torre did know what he was doing with Farnsworth?":
"Kyle Farnsworth had gone 79 appearances without inheriting a runner before Friday night, when he inherited two and immediately gave up a three-run homer."
