Game #8 - New York Yankees @ Kansas City Royals

New York Yankees @ Kansas City Royals

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  LF
Robinson Cano,  2B
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Álex Rodríguez,  3B
Hideki Matsui,  DH
Jorge Posada,  C
Jason Giambi,  1B
Wilson Betemit
Melky Cabrera,  CF

Phil Hughes,  RHP  (0-0,  3.00 ERA)

Kansas City Royals

Joey Gathright,  CF
Mark Grudzielanek,  2B
Mark Teahen,  LF
Jose Guillen,  RF
Billy Butler,  DH
Alex Gordon,  3B
Ross Gload,  1B
John Buck,  C
Tony Pena Jr.,  SS

Brian Bannister,  RHP  (1-0,  0.00)

As most of you know by now, Derek Jeter is out with a strained quad and is expected to miss the KC series.  For those of you wondering, the Yanks are 16-12 without Jeter in the starting lineup since the beginning of the 2004 season.

Robinson Cano has been moved to the #2 slot in the order.  Jason Giambi returns to the lineup after missing a couple of games due to a tweaked groin.

Brian Bannister is 0-1, 12.60 ERA in his lone career start against the Yankees.

Phil Hughes was hammered in his lone career start against the Royals (4.2 IP, 6 ER), but his performance that day was an afterthought however because it happened to be the same day A-Rod hit career # 500 at the Stadium.

Yankees' career numbers vs. Bannister can be viewed here.  Royals' career numbers vs. Hughes can be viewed here.

Surprised to see Giambi at first

Thought he'd DH once he got back.

Will we see Arod at short?

Lol

I love the x-mo on YES. Totally safe. And now Brian Bannister is serving out Base on Balls. He's not even close right now.

by ProudYankee on Apr 8, 2008 4:45 PM EDT   0 recs

At this rate

he'll be done by the fourth.

Seriously

An ugly outing by the kid. To be expected, I guess.

Phranchise

dodged a bullet there. Hopefully he can get through five.

he needs

a quick inning here to get back on track

Ugh

looks like Jason (unlike Bobby) wants to sign for the Vet. minimum next year.

Why

does he have a hard time hitting opposite field? Is it physically impossible for him or does he simply not want to do it?

by docgonzo on Apr 8, 2008 5:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he refuses

sort of a macho I'm-not-giving-in-and-change-my-approach kind of thing.

I don't understand it.

Wasn't he going to the opposite filed in Spring Training?

wow

This is a LOT of pitches.

He's at 79 pitches

Maybe has one more left after this.

by docgonzo on Apr 8, 2008 5:37 PM EDT   0 recs

It's hard to see much more than that

He'd need a 4 pitch inning to have a shot at 5.

I meant

the 4th will be his last. He's not making it to 5; his only shot for that was having a quick 3rd.

This game and the IPK

game were painful. The umpires aren't going to be giving these rookies the benefit of the doubt

This is why i wanted to see Girardi

squeeze another inning out of Moose last night. With Hughes and Kennedy going today and tomorrow, you never know how many innings they are going to give you.

That said, the defense didn't help Hughes at all today and could have made life a lot easier for him.

I heard on espn the other day

that only 3 teams have made the playoffs after starting 0-6.

i think

i heard that only 3 teams have made the playoffs after starting 0-5, only 2 have made it after 0-6...it'll be interesting to see if anyone made it after 0-7.

I picked the Tribe to win the Central

and the Tigers to miss the postseason. Little did I know that they would start out on such a skid.

They'll start hitting for sure, but it's going to be tough climbing out of this hole with the pitching problems they have right now.
