Kennedy, RHP (1-0, 1.89 ERA in 2007)
Jorge Posada is back in the lineup as the DH tonight but his stiff shoulder does not feel well enough to start behind the plate.
Speaking of not feeling well, Joe Girardi will sit out tonight's game with an upper respiratory infection and a high fever. Rob Thomson will be the interim skipper.
Tyler Kepner reports that both Melky Cabrera and Shelly Duncan have dropped their appeals to reduce their 3-game suspensions to two games apiece. Cabrera will serve his suspension tonight and tomorrow while Duncan will serve his on Sunday and Monday.
Ian Kennedy is 1-0, 1.29 ERA in one start (his first major league win) against the Rays.
Andy Sonnanstine is 1-1, 3.14 ERA in 2 starts against the Yankees.
Yankees' career numbers vs. Sonnanstine can be viewed here. Rays' career numbers vs. Kennedy can be viewed here.
Finally, here's an interesting tidbit from Ed Price in today's Star-Ledger:
"Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Posada are the first trio of teammates to play together 14 straight seasons since Jim Gantner, Paul Molitor and Robin Yount of the 1978-92 Brewers and the first ever for the Yankees."

Looks like the weather men
didn't have a clue that they were talking about. No rain expected until late tonight.
it looks icky but it's fine for baseball
but it's cold

For those of you watching at home...
how's IPK's pitching look?
he's struggling a bit
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Missing the spots?
Wild? Tentative? not a good beginning, that's for sure.
just missing it seems to me
not wild but he's walking them and a bit off...and almost up to 30 pitches in the first

he looked much better this inning

Gutsy
by IPK. It's good to see he can come back from down in the count, but I'd rather he get ahead.
YCL- I'm listening to the radio, you'll have to tell me.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
yeah
looks like it, if you ask me.

Now
even John Sterling is saying IPK's been squeezed.
Prediction: who ever comes into the game is the one sent down to activate Pettitte.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
lord ... there were 2 pitches in that at-bat
that could have gone either way.
jscape ...
are you in Sterling's head or something?
what else is on television?

It would be one thing if he was squeezing him
on the corners alone, but he was also calling pitches tough high and low. Well that's baseball.

Oh well...
tonight is one of the lumps Yankee fans should expect from the kids this season.
He'll come back and pitch well at KC.
I was the last of my friends to turn 16
and I was the first to fail my driving test (stupid NY and stupid parallel parking).
I know how Ian Kennedy feels.
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Not sure about that
I just heard Denis Leary's voice on that commercial and it was clearly recognizable. I love his show Rescue Me.
I'm a huge Rescue Me fan too, but
much of Leary's standup is at best borrowed from Bill Hicks, who died a while back.
almost all
of Dane Cook's material comes from Louie CK
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Dane Cook flat out sucks.
Not funny, and not at all original.
Plus he grew up in Arlington, MA, where I used to live - he's like a god up here...but man, is he not funny.
out of
all the places in MA that I have lived, Arlington was definitely my favorite.
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Where did you live?
I was across from the HS - great apartment, and that town has some great restaurants.
I think it was called Arlington Heights
is that a place?
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Yeah, on the Lexington border.
Not a bad area either, but the center's got the good restaurants, the library, the supermarkets, and the historical stuff.
Every Patriots' Day, they'd have the parade go right down Mass Ave in front of my building, shooting muskets the whole way. i actually miss that.
I was in graduate school when I lived there
I went to a little school in Cambridge that you probably never heard of so I wasn't home a lot. I had a craphole in Cambridge the first year and moved to Arlington the second year
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
no
the never heard of was facetious
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Oh sorry...there are a lot of small schools there.
Are we playing down going to Haaavaaard?
I try not to be
an ahole about it but I'm the exception rather than the rule
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
I try to take it on a case by case basis
As a teacher, I have about 6 or 7 kids a year that end up going there...they usually keep their heads unswelled when they come back to visit
I have to say
people who don't go there are much more impressed than people who do. With me it was well they let me in, how great could they be?
Groucho Marx I don't want to belong to a club that would have me as a member thing.
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
yeah, based on some of the kids I've seen go there
I've lost a little of my starry-eyed sense of the place.
But it's still a lot better than Brown, as far as I'm concerned
Interesting
Looks like we have some smarter people than me on this blog.
I'm just a lowly Purdue grad.
but you have psychic powers
the rest of us do not.

his standup is still his best
"I want coffee flavored coffee"
"Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig disease. How the hell do you not see that coming?"
"Cigarettes are bad for you? I thought they were full of vitamin C!"
And The Ref was good too.
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Last season was a little weak
I've got high hopes for next year though...
and The Ref does rock - very underrated movie
Ah, yes
No Cure for Cancer. I actually bought that CD after it came out. That was back in the early 90s.
I bought it in 95
I'm not sure when it came out but I was in graduate school and someone stole it from me.
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Like I said, Bill Hicks did a lot of that stuff first
and then of course, died of cancer...
but seriously, if you get a chance, dig up some of Hicks's stuff. If you like Leary, you'll love Hicks.
On the other hand
Leary's rants for MTV were great - lots of stuff involving Cindy Crawford, as I recall. And yes, that song....that was a good one.
Freaking finally
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
What?
Did the Yankees decide to visit the Bronx?

Michael Kay you are absolutely right

Not a peep from the offense until that conversation started.
they know he's a sux fan

Yes but his commentary on having all the Jews on the Red Sox

you must be 12
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Don't have to get them all back
in one inning. Just hope the pitching holds.
And now would be a good time for that long reliever Girardi wanted. Oh, well.
Michael Kay
with an Animal House reference
He's killing me here with the like-ability tonight
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
LOL ... I'm 28
I know who Dennis Leary is ... just trying to keep the DL conversation going. I actually agree with bronxbound that Rescue Me wasn't very good last year.
Hope it improves.
Man
Did I rave about Jonny A when the Yanks stole him for Clippard? I think I did; I know I should have.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I'll say you did
whether you did or not.

Thanks
I knew there was a reason I liked you.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Toronto's beating Boston ...
1 - 0 in the 6th, and the Jays are threatening to score. Runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.
Manny misplayed a flyball
runner scored, men on 1st and 2nd again.
Wow .. another error.
This time by Ellsbury. He caught it, crashed into the wall, and dropped it. Now Frnacona is out arguing the call, error, no out made.
Fucking Zaun ...
double play ball ... 3 - 0 Jays.
Little early
for scoreboard watching. Besides, after watching the three dudes Toronto just sent to the mound here, they're going to be pretty tough IF they stay healthy.
"Just when they think they got all the answers, I change the questions."

Not to jinx it,
but Posada and Molina are doing a great job of nailing would be base theives. Molina got two last night, and Jorge added one tonight...
The pitchers are probably also helping out with keeping them close and all
?
Jose is catching tonight
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
my bad...just habit.
I always assume Posada's behind the plate. My respect for Molina rises even more.
he's been great both offensively and defensively
I'm happy with our backup catcher
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
using Mr. Met as the catcher
would be an improvement over Nieves
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
why are we sending this guy down?
He's rocking tonight.
we have to send someone and he's the one
he'll be back and Patterson will be up
otherwise I'll be ticked off
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
They all have
I just hope Farns and Hawkins have good half seasons so they can be traded to make room for the cheap, long term players.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Who the hell would take
Professor Farnsworthless anyway? Fat contract, fat pitches - where's the upside?
I love Ohlie
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Now, I know
I've raved about him. I guess I rave about a bunch of these relievers. You and 'conda can have Ross, but I call dibs on Sanchez.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
you're just
a raving maniac
;)
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
I know
but too many main stream folks have talked about him- it's the same reason I can't call Joba my guy.
It was funny, last spring I was at my (then) girlfriend's for Passover, and she told her uncle that I write a Yankee blog so we were talking about players who could help the team and I said "There's a kid named Joba Chamberlain- you'll hear a lot about him in the next year or two." Haven't seen him since then, but it sure is nice to be right.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
we hardly remember
what a good bullpen looks like
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Because the starters have gotten
into the 6th inning until tonight. Pettitte needs to be sharp tomorrow.
Meanwhile this game has sped up- we're still down by 2 going into the 8th.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
23.14
IPK's ERA after his outing tonight....ouch.
Not pretty for sure
but it sounds like he was getting squeezed. Hopefully this is his worst night.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
He might've been squeezed a bit
but that's not a good excuse. He'll start getting those calls when he finds the zone with more consistency.
Whenever I see those old Toronto throwback jerseys
I think of George Bell, Lloyd Moseby, Jesse Barfield, Ernie Whitt, and Dave Stieb.
no instant replay in baseball
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Wow... I have mixed
feelings about Giambi playing so well at first. I hope that he doesn't get penciled in everyday because he is doing well.
I still think that he needs some days off.
Crowds are won and lost and won again, but our hearts beat for the diehards.
I think
He'll DH against lefties. They're likely to put Shelley in right and bench Abreu and Ensberg at first.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Somebody watching
give me the info that Sterling can't: is Hawkins leaving his pitches up or are the Rays hitting good pitches?
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
he's leaving his pitches up
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Well we're talking about the Super Bowl
and that makes me happy
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Well that settles it
send down Hawkins.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
and take off that jersey
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Funny
how the vets aren't as talented as the kids.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
You're in WGN land
So I think you'll back me up on this. If a relief pitcher sucks for the Cubs i.e. Farnsworth, Heredia, Hawkins, don't sign 'em.
Isn't the rule if the player is from the Cubs, don't sign him?
The ex-Cub jinx. The team that has more ex-Cubs loses.
You're exactly right
One of the biggest reasons I was vehemently against the Farsworth and Hawkins signings is because I saw first hand that they did in Chicago.
at least it would have been more fun
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
Good news everybody!
It's Professor Farnsworthless!
Well
I'm watching Canterbury's Law. I would be disbarred if I acted like this woman.
"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel
OHMYGAWD
Can we end this inning yet?
Bunch of arsonists in this pen....
Minor point
but the score might still be 7-4 if a certain dope didn't allegedly punch someone during spring training. Damon would have caught that ball if he was in LF.
Girardi violated the "no Farnsworth with men on base" rule. Torre made some notoriously bad bullpen decisions, but that was one of his best rules.
"Just when they think they got all the answers, I change the questions."
-- Roddy Piper
What we need
is a NO FARNSWORTH period rule.
Did we ever find video
that shows a punch?
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I don't think so
Would love to know what MLB is basing their suspension decision on. Maybe an ump saw him do it or something.

"It's a drive to deep right!"
and that will be caught on the track.
God, I hate John Sterling.

the weather people
are predicting rain for tomorrow.
I hope it doesn't screw up the game and/or Andy.
