PREGAME NOTES:

Chad Jennings reports that Chris Britton has indeed been recalled once again after spending 12 hours in Scranton.  Chad Moeller is back with the club as Jscape noted earlier.  It appears Jennings was wrong about the Yanks inability to use Moeller until next week.

To make room for Moeller on the 40-man roster, Sean Henn was activated from his rehab assignment and designated for assignment.

Who would've thought just weeks ago that Yankee fans would now breathe a sigh of relief after signing Chad Moeller?  Boy, how things have changed in such a short time.  And we're not quite through April yet.

Jeremy Bonderman is a lifetime 2-6, 5.58 ERA in 10 games (9 starts) against the Yanks, including 0-4, 6.66 ERA over his last 4 starts.

Andy Pettitte is a lifetime 10-8, 3.49 ERA in 22 starts against the Tigers, including an outstanding 5-1, 1.87 ERA in his last 6 starts.

Good to see Granderson out of the lineup

Must be on oxygen today after running around the bases all night. He’s not quite in Manny Ramirez territory, but he’s one of the biggest Yankee killers in the league.

by anaconda on Apr 30, 2008 6:27 PM EDT   0 recs

I gotta say

the Yankees are deep.

A-Rod and Posada are both out for a bit, and that lineup still looks (on paper) pretty strong. Now if only Giambi and Cano would start hitting…

Absolutely

If Damon keeps hitting and one of those two starts hitting, the Yanks will be in decent shape.

But long term, my playoff prediction depended on the Yanks scoring 950ish runs.

I haven't caught

the start of a broadcast in a while; they’ve changed the leadup from all John Sterling calls to a mix of big calls- Sterling at the end of a World Series, Michael Kay on Cone’s perfect game, somebody else (Fox guy?) on Aaron Boone’s homer. I like it.

Joe Buck called the Aaron Boone game

with Brett in the booth as well if I recall that day correctly.

Can I file my complaint

with the starting lineup now?

How about Ensberg and Duncan at the corners over Gonzalez and Giambi?

I'd go with Gonzalez and Duncan

Hey, it's not like I made out the lineup card

But that grenade might be sitting on Girardi’s desk right now.

Speaking of grenades, I remember reading David Wells’ book and he said Randy Myers used to keep one in his locker.

I did

And I must say, it was hilarious. I read it when it first came out. He was still with the Yanks back then.

I'm reading

Mark Feinstein’s “Living on the Black” about Moose and Glavine last season. I’m going to write a long review of it (I’ve waded through 450 pages already and still have another 60-70 to read).

Breaking news....

Tyler Kepner speculates that Hughes may be dropped from the rotation in favor of Darrell Rasner:

The Yankees appear to be on the verge of removing the struggling Phil Hughes from the starting rotation. Hughes, who lost Tuesday to the Detroit Tigers, falling to 0-4 with a 9.00 earned run average, is expected to be replaced Sunday by Darrell Rasner, who is 4-0 with a 0.87 E.R.A. at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Hughes was not on the field with the rest of the team during batting practice and was not available for comment before the game. It is not known if Hughes would be optioned to Scranton or placed on the disabled list with an injury not believed to be related to his pitching arm.

When asked after batting practice if Hughes was healthy, Manager Joe Girardi said he was. General Manager Brian Cashman said he could not comment on Hughes’s health status, but he said Hughes’s immediate future was being discussed.

by anaconda on Apr 30, 2008 7:10 PM EDT   0 recs

If Hughes

went on the DL, the Yanks could recall Moeller ‘early’ as the injury replacement. Then they could send Stewart down and recall Rasner to take his place. It makes a certain amount of sense. I’d want to see IPK pitch before committing to 2 weeks without Hughes, but I understand why they’d do it.

Re: Hughes

I think part of his problem is that he has a hard time overcoming bad innings. He was so dominant in the minors that he really didn’t have to deal with failure.

Even if he does get sent down or whatever, he’ll be back soon enough.

by anaconda on Apr 30, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree

and he’s so young. He needs to know how to deal with it but it’s tough when you’ve been a success the whole time.

Pete Abe likes Girardi....

Joe Girardi got testy again today when asked about the status of Phil Hughes. How could he not have anticipated that question? Here’s what he said:

"These are internal discussions that are meant to stay internal. Hughes is in the rotation right now." When reporters sought more information, it only got worse.

Right now? What does that mean? Either Hughes is pitching Saturday or he is not. It’s unfair to the player to leave him in limbo like that. And please don’t say maybe they don’t yet. They know. Whoever is pitching Saturday will throw a bullpen tomorrow.

by anaconda on Apr 30, 2008 7:41 PM EDT   0 recs

BTW....

We are introducing a new writer for PA starting tomorrow. His name is Gaz.

Myself included, all the current PA writers/moderators are people who were long time members before we started writing. Not the case with Gaz. He’s brand spanking new.

Should be fun to get a different perspective and another regular contributer to PA to keep the dialog flowing.

I miss Sheffield

the player not the person in the lineup.

by bronxbound on Apr 30, 2008 8:37 PM EDT   0 recs

Not me

I’m not a fan of “situational hitting”- I don’t really buy into clutch, I hate sac bunts, etc.

But I also hate players like Sheffield and Giambi (and Matsui sometimes) who go up to the plate with only one approach- pull the ball and try to hit a homer. Give me a team full of Jeters who can go the other way or pull the pitch, but have less power, any day of the week.
