Game #3 - Toronto Blue Jays @ New York Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays @ New York Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays

David Eckstein,  SS
Matt Stairs,  LF
Álex Ríos,  RF
Vernon Wells,  CF
Frank Thomas,  DH
Lyle Overbay,  1B
Aaron Hill,  2B
Marco Scutaro,  3B
Gregg Zaun,  C

Dustin McGowan,  RHP  (12-10, 4.08 ERA in 2007)

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  DH
Derek Jeter,  SS
Bobby Abreu,  RF
Álex Rodríguez,  3B
Jason Giambi,  1B
Robinson Canó,  2B
Hideki Matsui,  LF
Jose Molina,  C
Melky Cabrera,  CF

Phil Hughes,  RHP  (5-3, 4.46 ERA in 2007)

Jorge Posada remains out of the lineup with a stiff right shoulder.  Hideki Matsui makes his first start in LF while Johnny Damon shifts to DH.

Phil Hughes is already making his fourth career start against the Jays (1-1, 4.70 ERA), which includes his major league debut on May 1st of last season.

Dustin McGowan was 2-2, 5.25 ERA in 4 starts against the Yanks in 2007.

Yankees' career numbers vs. McGowan can be viewed here.  Jays' career numbers vs. Franchise can be viewed here.

Finally, for those Yankee fans who are concerned about the offense the first two games (and you know who you are!), it’s worth mentioning that the Greatest offense in the history of baseball (according to Steve Phillips), the Detroit Tigers, have now scored a grand total of 5 runs in 3 games and opened the 2008 campaign by getting swept at home by the KC Royals.

A sign of things to come?

Not on your life.  The Tigers will mash this season.  And the Yankees will too once the weather begins to warm up and they’re not facing the likes of Halladay and Burnett on a nightly basis.

Anybody else notice...

how rightie that Tigers line-up is? I really hadn't noticed, but with Granderson out, Guillen is their only lefty.

why would anyone be concerned

about the first 2 games?

I've read it on several boards today

And Kat O'Brien of Newsday raised the question today on her blog.

that's ridiculous

I would just shoot myself if I was "concerned" by the second game of the season

Phil

May well be the ace someday soon. That was a nice inning.

I did not realize he was the youngest pitcher in the majors.

McGowan looks tough as well

I read some previews that had him having the best season of any Jays starter.

and in funny news from Boston...

A group of students got more than they bargained for when they went to Fenway Park for a tour: one of them was attacked by a red-tailed hawk...apparantly there's three hawks that live in the park, and two are a nesting pair. The kids got too close and the hawk attacked one, scratching her head.

Sadly, the hawks' nest was removed by the animal rescue league.

I would have paid good money to see that hawk swoop down during a game and carry off Dustin Pedroia...

Gotta love his stuff tonight

And his location/command has been great too.

However, he needs to mix in his other pitches as well, especially the 2nd and 3rd time through the order.

by anaconda on Apr 3, 2008 8:09 PM EDT   0 recs

He needs to throw the changeup more

Too many fastballs and curveballs (good as it is)

For you lovers of prognostication:

That non sports magazine that everyone reads for the articles only came out with their baseball predictions. They picked the Yankees to finish 3rd in the East behind Boston and the Jays.

Maybe they oughta stick to the pictures....

by mrljdavid on Apr 3, 2008 8:11 PM EDT   0 recs

sorry, fill me in

How did Abreu get to third on a flyout to right and ground out to second?

by mrljdavid on Apr 3, 2008 8:15 PM EDT   0 recs

Giambi Shift

No one was covering third, so he just took it. The only one on that side of the infield was the 3rd base coach.

by Jugwine on Apr 3, 2008 8:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Its funny

The catcher went out to make sure someone was covering third before the at bat.

I wish he would hit a couple into left field so they would stop doing that.

I didn't think that at all

it was really civil. Looked like he said was that pitch low or wide and the ump said both.

kidding -

referring to Thomas and his forced exit. I would assume that Hughes, a rookie, would not be stupid enough to get into a beef with an ump - rookies don't get the benefit of the doubt anyway...no sense getting on the bad side.
