PREGAME NOTES:

Initial reports claim that Jorge Posada will not require season-ending surgery on his ailing shoulder, but I'm going to keep holding my breath until there is official confirmation from the organization.

Alex Rodriguez will likely be out of action for the next few days after re-aggravating his quad last night in Cleveland.  Chris Stewart makes his Yankee debut tonight.

Edwar Ramirez has been recalled from Scranton and Chris Britton has been sent back down before he got an opportunity to pitch.  I don't expect Britton to mow down major league hitters but I have no idea why he hasn't been given more of a look to see what he can do.

Phil Hughes is a lifetime 0-1, 7.50 ERA in one start (6 IP, 5 ER) against the Tigers.

Kenny Rogers is a lifetime 5-7, 6.45 ERA in 35 games (14 starts) against the Yanks and 0-7, 9.21 ERA in his last 11 regular-season starts.  He has not beaten the Yanks during the regular season since August 1993.

Yanks career numbers vs. Rogers can be viewed hereTigers career numbers vs. Hughes can be viewed here.

And finally, some good news regarding Harlan Chamberlain - who was released from a Lincoln hospital and is now at home recovering.

I missed it

how’d the Tigers score?

Hughes will be fine

Growing pains are a big part of the developmental process. Unless you’re Doc Gooden, 21 yr old kids usually don’t come out of the shoot and mow down hitters from Day 1.

I missed the first inning

was it good hitting or bad pitching?

A little of both

He walked Granderson to start the game – never a good thing. And his wild pitch was the difference between a 1-0 lead and a 2-0 lead.

fair enough...

2-0 isn’t a terrible hole if he can settle down.

I don't think that would be a terrible

idea with the young kids. With Rasner dealing the way he is now, why not skip IPK once or twice, let him get a few good outings under his belt.

What's the word, tonight?

I’ve never seen so many cross ups between the pitchers and catchers as I’ve seen this season.

Why

is Molina not playing? Is Stewart a better player or are they just resting him?

They are resting Molina

I think they want to be extra careful with him since he’s getting over an injury too (hamstring).

Since he has been

a backup all his life they don’t want to play him over 3 games in a row.

If Jorge's not having surgery

(and he’s getting a second opinion so who knows?) will we still call Moelher back?

He was DFA'd on Friday

so it won’t be until next week.

by anaconda on Apr 29, 2008 7:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

so it's 10 days?

and do we have to wait to see if someone’s going to claim him or can we reclaim him first? I never get this.

by bxgrl1 on Apr 29, 2008 7:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought there

was a 72 hour window where he could be claimed, but we had to wait ten days like we sent him down to the minors if he didn’t get claimed and we wanted him.

I've never heard the 72 hours part

but that doesn’t mean anything.

I still don’t understand how it works.

"The secret of managing is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided." -Casey Stengel

by bxgrl1 on Apr 29, 2008 7:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You are correct

and explained it better than I did.

Here’s how Jennings explained it:

As for Chad Moeller’s situation, I believe this is the way it works: He has 72 hours to clear waivers, but if he clears, the 10-day rule still applies. He’s been sent down, so the Yankees have to wait 10 days to call him up. They can’t claim they’re calling him up because of an injury - thus negating the 10 days - because Stewart went up for the injury. If Moeller goes up, he’ll be taking the place of perfectly healthy Stewart.

by anaconda on Apr 29, 2008 7:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

so

do we get to recall him before anyone else can claim him?

by Edwantsacracker on Apr 29, 2008 7:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah

that was a good pitch and stewart is brandy new. The two of them are out there kinda flapping in the breeze. Good that Moose is talking Ian through it in the dugout. Maybe he’s learning something from all this.

That didn't help

But just watching his reaction after each hit… he’s letting each mistake get to him. He has good stuff, but he needs to get his head straight.

Re:

I don’t think it’s the greatest idea to have Hughes or Kennedy pitch to a guy they’ve never worked with.

I would think the kids would be better served throwing to Molina and Stewart relegated to Wang, Pettitte, or Moose.

by anaconda on Apr 29, 2008 8:01 PM EDT   0 recs

That's a good point

You’d think Girardi of all people would know that.

by Jugwine on Apr 29, 2008 8:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I was thinking the same thing

they’re getting killed by a lot of this catcher business but this was really a tough situation for a rookie pitcher. Hasn’t he pitched with 4 catchers this year?

Ugh

Tough inning.

I agree about not having Stewart out there with Phil – he’s not versed enough in the hitters to call a good game.

by docgonzo on Apr 29, 2008 8:07 PM EDT   0 recs

What I don't get

is how Girardi, as a catcher, knowing that the kids need some confidence, can send Stewart out with Phil?

I know Pete Abe doesn’t like Joe G. and it’s ticked me off to see him deride him all season but if he takes him to task for this one, he’ll have a point.
