Wang, Chamberlain, Rivera
Wang: C+. I know this guy is now 5-0 on the season, he was in the running for the Cy Young and he has more wins over the last 2 seasons than anybody, but I still wouldn't have started him in Game 1 last year. Anyway, I hear he had decent command of his sinker today--I didn't actually see the game--but does he stack up against Santana? Only clowns in Pinstripes would think so. Chamberlain: B-. Overrated. Rivera: F. This guy is hardly Hall of Fame material. I would trade him for Lincecum or Santana in a heartbeat.

Classic
Haha, this made me laugh.
In all reality though, Wang, Joba, and Mo put together one of the best pitched games I’ve seen in a long time. And even Santana can’t say he’s 5-0 or that his team has won all 6 games he’s started. A+’s all around, especially to Wang’s slider.

Let me also add
Wang can’t beat elite teams on the road – especially not at The Jake (it’s real name) or Fenway.

Oh my
I was thinking of doing a very similar post.
Wang: 4 hits F-
HE SUCKS! That moron Cashman could have had the double burger at Big Boy for this washout. What was he THINKING??

C+
That’s pretty generous for Wang. After all, he only won by 1 run. Is that going to cut it in the postseason? No. Santana would have won by ATLEAST 3 runs today.

and lincecum
would have made sure the game was won by a walk off even if it was an away game because Lincecum DELIVERS. He’s totally clutch. Freaking Wang! LOSER!

Easy to talk crap now
especially when I made the call about not starting Wang in games 1 and 5 last year BEFORE the series started. Where the F was your ass and rest of the people here about Torre’s decision….I’ve been negative about Mussina and he’s been better than I thought and have been very negative about Hughes and Kennedy and they’ve been bad. And Cashman is Cashman. Just from the little I’ve seen of Kobayashi, he’s clearly better than Hawkins and Cashman wasn’t even in on this guy and he’s $3.1M per season. And I also said before the season I would’ve signed Mahay and Affeldt. Let’s see how that turns outs. As far as Wang, if he can continue throwing the slider as well as he did today he would establish himself as a true No. 1. As far as Chamberlain, the stupid Yankee organization and the rest of the scouts didn’t even realize that his talent was clearly above Hughes.

You have to agree
c+, B-, F as grades on the pitching in a 1-0 victory is laughable.

Just to humor you?
Who would you have started in Game 1 if not Wang? Pettitte makes sense, but then you’d still have to pitch Wang in Game 2, which was also on the road. Unless of course you wanted to start Clemens, who was on a bum leg and an empty tank.
So if you assume – and I know you do – that Wang would have been bad on the road in game 2, then you are still in the same situation when game 4 comes around – only Pettitte is even less equipped to pitch on 3 days rest than Wang is, and the game was at the Stadium, where Wang usually pitches well.
So as usual, I don’t understand why you keep bringing this up.

Re: Knicks
That’s a really odd and ridiculous thing to say. I happen to respect people who still root for their teams in times of agony like the Knicks. Nothing wrong with a little loyalty.
Hey, I’m a Miami Dolphins fan and they were 1-15 last season. But, I’ve rooted for them for 20 years and I’m not going to jump ship because they haven’t exactly been a model franchise for several years. How stupid is that?
There’s a term for people who drop any affiliation to their teams through the bad times – they’re called “fair weather fans.”

Miami fan since 1971. Gotta’ take the good with the bad, and we’ve had bad for a long, long time.
I wouldn’t do such a disservice to fair weather fans because that connotates that they are indeed fans of some kind. Roth clearly is not a fan.

It's not odd
You continue to support a team that has a complete fool for an owner and has ruined the franchise. You are a typical fanatic.

Re:
I’ve got news for you, the Steinbrenners are not selling the team and Cashman will likely be the GM for another few years.
I’m no fan of Hank Steinbrenner and I’m ambivalent about Cashman. But I’m not going to stop rooting for my team.
If you cannot handle that – sever your ties as a fan of this club and be done with it. It can’t be good for your health to wake up so bitter everyday.

You are supporting the team ...
Because you are still a seaon ticket holder. BTW I need two tickets … Since you don’t go, can I have them? I love my team and would like my daughter to experience the magic that is Yankees Stadium before the final curtain comes down.

Actually yes....
Anytime in the season would be wonderful. Of course I’d prefer Friday-Sunday as it’s easier to travel up on the weekend than during the week. That would be amazing. Keep me posted bxgrl, and thanks!

I'm a season ticket holder in name only
My cousin paid for all four tickets this season. If he has any that he doesn’t plan to use they will go for what the market will bear, meaning best offer gets them. I will not pay to see this team.

If that were the case
I would’ve stopped rooting for the Yankees in the mid to late 60’s or in the 80’s to early 90’s. I’m just not going to continue to root for a team with 3 idiots at the helm.

All joking and grading aside
how about the pitching around the American League yesterday? Wang pitches a beautiful 7 innings, and Sabathia counters with 8 innings of great baseball. Shields shuts downs Boston, and Beckett only lets in one earned run and strikes out 5 batters in the first two innings.
I guess its one of those days that confirms what we already knew, wins for a pitcher don’t mean anything. All four of those guys gave a performance that should line their team up to win the game. Its always impressive to see pitchers shut down the opposing offense but all four of the teams have good to great offenses.
Crowds are won and lost and won again, but our hearts beat for the diehards.

Wins don't mean anything and
I honestly believe we’re on the brink of an era with better starters. The last generation of pitchers had 5 lock for the Hall guys: Maddux, Clemens (now a ?), Pedro, Glavine, and Johnson, a couple of borderline guys and then a big dropoff of mediocre guys who had one or two great seasons.
The new generation has to make good on its potential, of course, but it seems like there are about a dozen guys under 27 who could reach superstardom (if not quite Madduxdom).
Shield and Kazmir in Tampa. Hughes and Joba in NY. Buchholtz and Beckett in Boston. Jesse Litsch in Toronto. John Danks in Chicago. Sabathia and Carmona in Cleveland. Zack Greinke in KC. Liriano in Min. King Felix in Seattle.
Part of the shift is economic; team’s realize the cost and value of good starting pitching, so they’re devoting more resources to drafting and training starters. Plus, medical advances will keep more of those guys on the field than would have been possible 20 years ago.

Easy, kemosabe
I think you may be right about the next era of great arms, but to lump Hughes and Joba in the mix is just alittle premature, in my opinion. But don’t get me wrong. I’d love to see it, and believe it might happen—someday (like when Joba gets out of the pen). Here’s the young guns I see framing the new era: Santana, Beckett, Peavy, Webb, Oswalt, Lincecum, Sabathia, Carmona, Verlander, Bonderman, Olsen, Grienke, Shields, Felix the Cat, Wang, Kazmir…
There’s more, but I contend that between 8-10 of these guys have 200+ seasons.

Hughes and Maddux
That’s your attempt at humor of course. Anybody who wants to mention any of these pitchers in the same breath at Maddux better go back and clearly look at how tremendous he was.
by andyroth on Apr 29, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh yes
He was tremendous at age 21 (Hughes’ age) when he went 6-14 with a 5.61ERA and a 1.64 WHIP, making 27 starts and averaging 5.2 innings per start. It’s his K:BB that really wows me: 101:74.

I disagree about Bonderman
Not after his total collapse last season and he’s still struggling this year. As good as his stuff has been he hasn’t even put one great year together yet.
