First off, congratulations to C-Rod and A-Rod for the birth of their yet-to-be-named baby girl last night.  Hmmm, two girls?  How is A-Rod going to afford those weddings?

As for tonight's game, as expected, A-Rod is out of the lineup and has been replaced by Morgan Ensberg.  Pete Abe speculates that A-Rod could be back in the lineup as early as Thursday.

Jorge Posada gets the start behind the plate tonight for the first time since April 8th and you can bet your @ss that the ChiSox base runners will test his shoulder right away.  I certainly would.

Jose Contreras is a lifetime 2-4, 3.96 ERA ERA in 6 starts against the Yanks, but has lost his last four starts against them (6.08 ERA, 1.35 WHIP).

Chien-Ming Wang is a lifetime 2-0, 2.57 ERA in 3 starts against the White Sox, including a complete game 5-1 victory on June 6th of last season.

Yanks' career numbers vs. Contreras can be viewed here.  White Sox career numbers vs. Wang can be viewed here.

I get to listen to Hawk Harrelson for the next three days. Sigh.

As bad as Michael Kay is, he’s Mel Allen by comparison.

Word

Nice to see Damon lead off with a hit for a change.

by docgonzo on Apr 22, 2008 8:15 PM EDT   0 recs

Hawk just had a Cone moment...

They [Sox] need to make Wang get it up.”

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 8:35 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm only half paying attention

and I feel like I’ve already heard a lot of jibberish. If you let your hitters swing 3-0, you’ll get a lot more walks? The Red Sox won their division in 2004?

by Jugwine on Apr 22, 2008 8:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

See that?

Going to the opposite field can only help Giambi’s hitting.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 8:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Wanger

is getting hit pretty hard.

by seanp23 on Apr 22, 2008 8:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Man, almost anything you say with Wang's name in it

can be interpreted as raunchy.

That said, nice timely K. Now let’s get out of this inning.

by mrljdavid on Apr 22, 2008 9:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Damn...

I’ve never seen that in my life. The bat must’ve had a crack in it and broke in half on the swing.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 9:02 PM EDT   0 recs

did you know

that the nickname “the windy city” has nothing to do with the weather?

by seanp23 on Apr 22, 2008 9:18 PM EDT   0 recs

Legend has it

that the name came from Chicago once holding the world’s fair and there was so much overblown blather from politicians about it that it was called the “Windy City.”

But the name now does refer to the winds off Lake Michigan.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 9:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

+2

but dont you live in chicago? so -1

by seanp23 on Apr 22, 2008 9:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

not for living in chicago

but for having an unfair advantage

hey, you asked

You didn’t say a Chicagoland native can’t answer the question.

Boy

It was nice to see Robbie break through

Again

Would have been nicer to see him cross home plate…

by Jugwine on Apr 22, 2008 9:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm starting to like the O'Neill/Cone tandem

in the broadcast booth. Sans Michael Kay of course.

by bronxbound on Apr 22, 2008 9:55 PM EDT   0 recs

love o'neil

he brings so much more from the batters perspective than Singleton does.

by seanp23 on Apr 22, 2008 10:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I like all of the YES announcers

for the exception of Kay. I thought David Justice sucked, but he’s gone now.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 10:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I dont dislike Singleton

I just think O’neil is better. Probably because he hasnt been in the booth with Kay as long and doesnt seem to want to do play by play as much.

Over 100 pitches

We really need to get the offense going.

Get some pressure off the staff.

Care to summarize

for us out-of-town viewers?

by Jugwine on Apr 22, 2008 10:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oneil

was talking about how frustrating it is to get a borderline call 1-0 to make it 1-1 instead of 2-0 and how it affects the at bat and cone sort of gave the counter point. I Like Oneil because he still shows his frustration even in the booth. It was a borderline pitch (probably a strike anyway) but as a hitter Oneil wants that called a ball and wants the count 2-0 and he talked about how much that changes an at bat.

Abreu

The ball must be really carrying out to LF because I didn’t think there was a chance that ball was going out.

I thought it was a routine fly ball off the bat.

Best part about it

was the dead silence from the Sox announcers.

(Okay, the four runs were the best part about it, shutting those homers up was a close second)

by Jugwine on Apr 22, 2008 10:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Homer announcers don't bother me because every team has homer announcers

It’s just that these guys just flat out suck and have the most annoying schtick in MLB.

  • Grab some bench!
  • You can put it on the BOOOOAAAAAARRRDD…..
  • That’s a can of corn
  • Duck snort
  • That’s a hang whiff ‘em

It goes on and on….

thank your lucky stars

The Radio side

Just got home. Had to listen to Ed Farmer and Steve Stone on the radio. I never really had to listen to them before. I’ve always liked Stoney but Ed Farmer..Wow! What a piss-baby. All he does is cry. “Yankees spend money, wah-wah-wah.” Do you know how much they pay this guy? Wah-wah-wah.” “That looked like a strike. Jeter will always get that call.” Ugh.

Re: Steve Stone

I didn’t know Stone did the ChiSox games. I loved Stone when he was announcing for the Cubs with Harry Caray.

One of the top color men in the business, IMO.

Started this year.

He really does his homework. Excellent analysis. Very weird hearing him do a Sox game though.

I get that with Safari

sometimes, especially on MLB.com’s stat pages. Weird.

Michael kAY:

the yankees have revealed their ultimate plan; Joba Chaberlain is going to become a starter at some point…

Are we the only ones who have been paying attention since last year? How is this news to people?

by seanp23 on Apr 22, 2008 10:48 PM EDT   0 recs

Re: Joba

The media did the same thing in March when Joba was moved back to the pen after making a few starts in ST.

Everyone and their mother knew that was the plan back in November of last season but the media reported the move like it was breaking news or something.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 10:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Its incredible

I dont get it at all. Its like everyone, but those who’s decisions that matter, has this thing up for debate.

Great

The Old Bruney showed up tonight

by docgonzo on Apr 22, 2008 10:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Dear Brian Bruney

Please, let’s have more of 2008 Bruney and less of 2007 Bruney.

by Jugwine on Apr 22, 2008 10:52 PM EDT   0 recs

How pathetic is Ozzie Guillen?

Abreu is much worse against lefties but let’s Dotel pitch to him rather than Thornton?

by andyroth on Apr 22, 2008 10:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Why argue it?

I say let him be pathetic, if that’s the result.

by docgonzo on Apr 22, 2008 10:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

absolutely

what good is he if its 7-6 in the 8th?

by seanp23 on Apr 22, 2008 11:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

My question was geared to

all the people that want him in the rotation. You wouldn’t have this luxury then. I myself am on the fence about the whole situation.

by bronxbound on Apr 22, 2008 11:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

true that

then we go back to whining about the lack of a good set-up man.

by mrljdavid on Apr 22, 2008 11:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

All I know is

if Moose, Hughes, and Kennedy had been better to this point, there would be no debate right now.

by bronxbound on Apr 22, 2008 11:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It would be a debate for me

I’ve been on the Joba in the rotation argument since his major league debut.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 11:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Question

if he gets him swinging on a breaking ball that jorge cant handle, can he just step on home plate rather than throw down to first?

by seanp23 on Apr 22, 2008 11:04 PM EDT   0 recs

No...

the hitter can’t run with a man on 1B.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 11:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

with 2 out he can

Not to be that guy

But here we go again.

The best word to use for Bruney is “unreliable”. I don’t think anyone says “whew” when he enters a game.

Farnsworth stinks most of the time, not that he did anything wrong tonight besides occupy a roster spot.

How does Girardi not know this? Why does he keep trusting these guys? If you believe Hank and Cash he is gonna have one less safety valve later this summer. He really should be using this time to audition new people to get late inning big outs. The Yanks are gonna need another “whew” guy.

I’d like to see him give Ohlendorf a shot in these spots.

cart before the horse

All this is irrelevant if its 10-2 in the 7th because the starter stinks.
