First off, congratulations to C-Rod and A-Rod for the birth of their yet-to-be-named baby girl last night.  Hmmm, two girls?  How is A-Rod going to afford those weddings?

As for tonight's game, as expected, A-Rod is out of the lineup and has been replaced by Morgan Ensberg.  Pete Abe speculates that A-Rod could be back in the lineup as early as Thursday.

Jorge Posada gets the start behind the plate tonight for the first time since April 8th and you can bet your @ss that the ChiSox base runners will test his shoulder right away.  I certainly would.

Jose Contreras is a lifetime 2-4, 3.96 ERA ERA in 6 starts against the Yanks, but has lost his last four starts against them (6.08 ERA, 1.35 WHIP).

Chien-Ming Wang is a lifetime 2-0, 2.57 ERA in 3 starts against the White Sox, including a complete game 5-1 victory on June 6th of last season.

Yanks' career numbers vs. Contreras can be viewed here.  White Sox career numbers vs. Wang can be viewed here.

I get to listen to Hawk Harrelson for the next three days. Sigh.

As bad as Michael Kay is, he’s Mel Allen by comparison.

I'm only half paying attention

and I feel like I’ve already heard a lot of jibberish. If you let your hitters swing 3-0, you’ll get a lot more walks? The Red Sox won their division in 2004?

Going to the opposite field can only help Giambi’s hitting.

Legend has it

that the name came from Chicago once holding the world’s fair and there was so much overblown blather from politicians about it that it was called the “Windy City.”

But the name now does refer to the winds off Lake Michigan.

Oneil

was talking about how frustrating it is to get a borderline call 1-0 to make it 1-1 instead of 2-0 and how it affects the at bat and cone sort of gave the counter point. I Like Oneil because he still shows his frustration even in the booth. It was a borderline pitch (probably a strike anyway) but as a hitter Oneil wants that called a ball and wants the count 2-0 and he talked about how much that changes an at bat.

Just got home. Had to listen to Ed Farmer and Steve Stone on the radio. I never really had to listen to them before. I’ve always liked Stoney but Ed Farmer..Wow! What a piss-baby. Not to be that guy

But here we go again.

The best word to use for Bruney is “unreliable”. I don’t think anyone says “whew” when he enters a game.

Farnsworth stinks most of the time, not that he did anything wrong tonight besides occupy a roster spot.

How does Girardi not know this? Why does he keep trusting these guys? If you believe Hank and Cash he is gonna have one less safety valve later this summer. He really should be using this time to audition new people to get late inning big outs. The Yanks are gonna need another “whew” guy.

I’d like to see him give Ohlendorf a shot in these spots.

by mrljdavid on Apr 22, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're missing the point.

There are going to be games like this when Joba leaves the bullpen.

Bruney has pretty much proven he cannot be trusted. Ditto Farnsworth.

While he does have the big safety valve in Joba, Girardi should be trying out other people for the role.

Bruney and Farns have more than proven they cannot handle the job on anything close to a consistent basis. Can we all agree on this?

I just don’t think losing 20 lbs is going to change his track record of unreliability.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

He’s skinnier and has longer hair, but when there’s the slightest hint of pressure he’s the same dude: he loses the strike zone completely.

And he got very lucky against Dye. O’Neill was salivating at the hanger he threw him on the first pitch.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who is?

In the major leagues, there are maybe ten high quality arms not closing games- and that’s if you count the injured guys like Zumaya. It’s a matter of the manager being on top of his team enough to know who is the hot hand, rather than trying to establish roles for the relievers.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

Good point

I’d have more faith in Bruney if he just threw more strikes. The walks just drive me nuts.

by anaconda on Apr 22, 2008 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Relievers need roles

I think they need to have some general of idea of when they will pitch during the game.

There is a mental aspect to relief pitching – especially toward the end of the game – that needs to be accounted for.

Going with the hot hand is the surest way to blow a game, Ozzie Guillen did it tonight as a matter of fact.

Maybe

it’s cause I’m not a world class athlete (hell, I’m not a varsity athlete), but “going with the hot hand is the surest way to blow a game” makes no sense to me.

I understand the guys want to know how they’re likely to be used, but they prepare to face the same hitters, and they go out there to succeed no matter what inning it is.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Apr 22, 2008 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

Farnsworth could get the next 40 hitters out, I would still have no confidence in his ability to get the 41st out.

Scott Proctor was by most accounts an effective reliever while he was here. There were several occasions however, when for whatever reason he was called upon in the 9th inning to close out a game, and he pooped all over himself every time. He just couldn’t handle it.

Bruney has shown that he stinks if the game or the situation is remotely important. He can get out all the hitters he wants to in the 5th or 6th inning. I’d still rather not see him in the 8th inning with the game on the line.

-- Phil Rizzuto after hearing about the Pope's death

by matthaggs on Apr 23, 2008 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In the later innings

I believe a pitcher can let it creep into his head that if he throws a bad pitch the game could be over.

The successful relievers feed off this. The not so successful ones grip the ball a little tighter, can’t throw a quality strike, and give up big walks and big hits.

In the fifth or sixth inning if you give up a run or two, there’s still time to overcome it on the offensive side. A lot less pressure.

seems to have found that guy in Ohlendorf. If/when he gets tired out, Bruney and Farnsworth will have to be those guys. Since they wont be relied on day in and day out, hopefully they can pull it together.
