Game #16 - Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees
Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees, Apr 16, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Boston Red Sox

Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
David Ortiz, DH
Manny Ramirez, LF
Kevin Youkilis, 3B
J.D. Drew, RF
Jason Varitek, C
Sean Casey, 1B
Julio Lugo, SS
Clay Buchholz, RHP (0-1, 3.27 ERA)
New
York Yankees

Melky Cabrera, LF
Derek Jeter, SS
Bobby Abreu, RF
Álex Rodríguez, 3B
Hideki Matsui, LF
Jorge Posada, DH
Jason Giambi, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Chad Moeller, C
Chien-Ming Wang, RHP (3-0, 1.23 ERA)
An interesting note through the first 15 games; Yanks are 8-0 when their starters pitch at least 6 innings and 0-7 when they do not.
Damon gets the night off tonight against his former idiots and Posada has DH duties once again. According to Ed Price, Posada thinks he'll be able to start behind the plate tomorrow, which would be just the sixth time this season.
Tonight's pitching matchup is a rematch of Game #11 just last Friday when Wang tossed a masterpiece in a complete game 4-1 victory over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Clay Buchholz makes his second career start against the Yanks and was very good in his own right last Friday (6 IP, 1 ER, 3 H).
Chien-Ming
Wang has pitched well against the Red Sox throughout his career at Yankee Stadium (3-2, 3.00 ERA in 6 starts).
Yanks career numbers vs. Buchholz can be viewed here. Red Sox career numbers vs. Wang can be
viewed here.
Finally, here's some good news regarding Harlan Chamberlain. Pete Abe reports that he is doing "significantly better" and is now sitting up in bed. Good to hear.

Put the shirt back, just to be safe
But 3 hits in 10 ABs, isn’t really coming around just yet. It’s also worth noting that he hasn’t walked since the Detroit series- I suspect teams are going to pitch to him more aggressively (I know the Yanks did).

Anybody else

Until Posada can catch
this is going to happen for another several games.
I wouldn’t sit Matsui because he’s the only Yankee who has hit from the start. Posada had the night off last night.
Now Ed Price says....
that Posada is unlikely to start behind the plate tomorrow:
After making 40 throws of about 150 feet during batting practice, Jorge Posada was ruled out for tomorrow night.“He’s not there yet,” manager Joe Girardi said.
Wow
Anybody see the picture of Buchholtz on MLB.com’s frontpage? He’s looking far to his left, and it looks like he has not pupil or iris in his eyes. Demonic.

Update from Pete Abe from Paul O'Neill
"What can I say? The fans have always been unbelievable to me there. I don’t really know how to explain it. It makes you feel good that the fans still think of you as wearing that number."
Sounds like O’Neill was very Jeter-esque with his approach and didn’t want to “tell the fans what to do.”
I've got steak,
all I need are some strikes from Wang to make this a perfect night.

This sucks
Wang’s like Superman to me, so it’s weird to see him not pitch well, no matter who he’s pitching against.
Nice play

Wang got out of that inning well btw. He’s a star.
Question from a Sox fan
I’m going to the game tomorrow, sitting in the bleachers. It’s my first time since I was about 12. If I wear my Sox hat, will someone start a fight with me?
I mean, I’d like to wear my colors, but not if it’s going to cause me problems. I’m pretty easygoing, and I’m not about to start a fight, but if someone dumps beer on me or my wife for wearing a hat I’ll break their nose. I’d rather not spend the night in the Tombs.
Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Manny ain't the only bad man.
No beer in the bleachers
You’ll get booed as you walk in, but other than that you should be fine. I sat next to a BoSox fan in the CF bleachers in 2004, and everything was fine.

Wang got away with that
in more ways than one.
That location is not usually called a strike and he hung it as well. The only reason that ball wasn’t hit a mile is because Manny must’ve been looking for the fastball.
Was it hung?
Gameday says it was 87 MPH, 7” break, which lines up with his other sliders.

To my thinking
going from Wang to Ohley is the wrong move because there’s not enough change in the “look.”
Course, strikes would be a change tonight, so here’s hoping.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Albaladejo should be pitching right now
A contrast to Wang as you said and Ohlendorf is most effective in one or two inning stints. He’s more of a set-up guy than a long reliever.
You think he'll be used for more than an inning or two?
I’ll just be happy if he can get out of this inning without further damage.
No, he'll go 2 innings max
But I guess the good thing is that if he keeps getting the job done in these situations, he’ll earn Girardi’s trust for pressure situations.
It's not the pen
that’s struggled, it was the starter (again).
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Alright
Time to get ‘em back. Is Tavarez coming back out? That was a ridiculously long inning.
28 pitches for Ohlendorf- I bet he’s done.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Waldman just did too
And I can’t believe O’Neill didn’t say “It’s no slight to me” even if he does want his number retired.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
The only part of the story I hadn’t heard was that both Jeter and Posada told him that it doesn’t make sense to antagonize the fans. That’s why Hawkins ultimately gave it up.
Sounds like Posada, Jeter, and O’Neill all took the same class on how to deal with the fans.
The class was titled
“Win and don’t say anything stupid”
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I don't want to open a can of worms
but Jeter could have helped out A-Rod more than once in recent years. He just chose not to.
Im still not sure how I feel about it
But I think Pete Abe was a bit sanctimonious about the whole ordeal.
I don't mind Varitek
Since Posada has been the superior catcher their entire careers- that’s always been an easy argument to win with my BoSox friends.
Youkilis, on the other hand, I despise.

by detroit yankee on Apr 16, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
If ESPN and FOX had their way....
It would be Yanks/Red Sox in the ALCS every season. They like ratings more than anything else.
I think
what most people found troubling was who it was. Most likely Hawkins will not be with the team next year. Of all the numbers he could take, why 21? If it was one of the young guns, as many here suggested, it wouldnt have been nearly as big a deal.
