Game #13 - New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox, Apr 13, 2008 8:05 PM EDT

New York Yankees

Johnny Damon,  CF
Robinson Cano,  2B
Bobby Abreu,  RF

Álex Rodríguez,  3B
Hideki Matsui,  LF
Jorge Posada,  DH
Jason Giambi,  1B
Jose Molina,  C
Alberto Gonzalez,  SS

Phil Hughes,  RHP  (0-1,  5.00 ERA)

Boston Red Sox

Jacoby Ellsbury,  LF
Dustin Pedroia,  2B
J.D. Drew,  RF
Manny Ramirez,  DH
Kevin Youkilis,  3B
Sean Casey,  1B
Jason Varitek,  C
Coco Crisp,  CF
Julio Lugo,  SS

Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP  (2-0,  1.47 ERA)

Pete Abe reports that Derek Jeter felt no discomfort after fielding grounders and running several 50-yard sprints in the outfield.  He could return to action as early as Tuesday night in Tampa.

Melky Cabrera (0-7 vs. Matsuzaka) is out of the lineup tonight, so Johnny Damon will start in CF and Jason Giambi is moved down to the #7 slot.

Mired in a horrific slump, David Ortiz is out of the lineup for the Red Sox and Manny Ramirez moves over to DH.  Kat O'Brien of Newsday says Jonathon Papelbon is "absolutely not available" tonight and Hideki Okajima is probably unavailable as well.

As you all know, Phil Hughes makes his first career start against the hated Red Sox.  Peter Pascarelli of ESPN wrote a preview for tonight's game and expects big things out of Hughes before his career is all said and done.

Matsuzaka did have a winning record against the Yanks in 2007, but they knocked him around pretty hard (2-1,  6.12 ERA in 4 starts).  Yanks career numbers vs. Matsuzaka can be viewed here

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Yanks are now 0-6 on the young season when they have given up more than two runs.

By the way, the dark shade of gray on the blockquotes/FanShots has now been changed to a lighter shade of gray.  It was a necessary fix because normal text was rather difficult to read.

Hello Everyone

Padres fan here from San Diego, but most of the family lives in NY and the Bombers are definetly my second team. I also hate the red socks with the red hot intensity of one thousand suns. Padres already took two of three from the Brooklyn Bums this afternoon, so I thought I'd cruise over here for some Sunday Night Baseball. Go Yanks!

Oh my god. Oh my god, what's happening to me? I'm like that Texas woman who gave her son brain damage by holding him under water. (gasps) I'm just like Barbara Bush! - Lois Griffin

They need to make Matsuzaka work

The Yanks knocked him around last year and he will throw 100 pitches pretty quickly if they let him.

Now that Papelbon and Okajima are unavailable, I like Yanks' chances in a battle of the bullpens with Ohlendorf, Joba, and Mo all well rested.

Take some pitches, A-Rod! You let Dice-K off the hook with one swing!

Hey, Jscape

Hughes was much better than his box score. I was impressed.

His velocity was higher than I expected, his location was away from the middle, and that was a nasty hook. Most impressively, he kept his cool. Did not give in.

He got sqeezed on a couple calls, and some of the hits were bleeders. Manny did not cruch that curbe ball over second base.

The catcher didn't help either.

Got home just in time for Giambi's homer. Good to see the Yanks get caught up on those walks.

And Molina just singled, I don't like losing the DH, but I guess they figure the bench is deep enough...

The DH hits for the pitcher

if you make what amounts to a double switch putting the DH in the field, then the pitcher has to bat in the spot of whomever the DH replaces in the field.

It's not something you see every day, since most DHs can't play the field very well.

Stupid move

First of all Betemit isn't exactly Dave Roberts.

Molina isn't the tying run.

The Red Sox have their fast guys coming up next inning.

Doesn't make any sense.

He probably figures he's putting Betemit in anyway because he batted for Gonzalez, but you don't want to lose Molina behind the plate - and the DH.
