Sabathia in 09?

http://www.bugsandcranks.com/new-york-yankees/johan-who-lets-talk-about-cc

Just a nice little article which suggests our boys are in the driver's seat in the 09 "who gets Sabathia?" scramble.

Seriously, I really like this.  Granted, it's a long season ahead and lots can happen, but this bodes well.  The fact that we didn't sell off the future and overpay for Santana might hurt a little now, but next year we'll have the cash and room for Sabathia, who despite being a bit hefty, would be a great pickup - eats innings, stud pitcher.

Anyway, check out the article.

I would be a lot more
nervous about giving CC a long expensive contract than I would be about Johan.

His innings have just been so high, and he isn't in great shape. All these pitchers contracts are so long.

Think what the Andy Pettitte
workout would do for him.

Besides sign him, it's only money, a good gamble.  He 5 to 1 to be better than Carl Pavano.  He could be much better.  He could be good.

Even if all of the trinity grow this year toward being top pitchers, with Mussina and Andy coming toward the finish line we have room for him.

if the trinity look good the Red Sox will work hard to keep him from the Yanks.

Premature, but ...
He's young, big, and dominant, but I don't know that I would drop a long-term contract on him. With pitchers, I'm thinking 3 years.

In general
I agree with Ron and Ed.

But Cash showed some creativity with the A-Rod deal, front loading it, so that if he stays healthy it will be a reasonable FA contract at the end of his career.

If Sabathia buys into the same concept, he could sign his age 28-33 years for (speculating) 21, 22, 24, 23, 23, 20. He'd receive more total dollars than Santana over the same years (age wise). He'd also be the highest paid pitcher in the game until 2013 (when Santana jumps to 25).

I don't think Sabathia's work load is a great concern. Last year was the only time he's crossed 210IP, and we'll be watching him very carefully for signs of fatigue and lost velocity.

Contract lenghth is market driven
The clubs want shorter, generally.  Players want longer.  I hope the clubs learned their lesson on opt outs and we do not continue to see them.

But, when several teams compete for a player he tries to play them against each other and get his length.  If clubs want them enough they give in.

I wouldn't be surprised to see CC get a long contart IF he gets to the FA market.

Also, I will bet anyone who wants a quarter that he never actually gets to the market.  The Indians will try to "Santana" deal him and get something out of him.  So, someone will give some players or prospects contingent on him signing an extension.

I know, they said they wouldn't.  Talk is cheap.

what if
we shoot for 4-5 years and blow away other teams in avg annual value?

Not a bad idea
We'd learn a lot about Sabathia if he had to choose between 20/6 or 24/4.

probably yes
if it's only money involved the risk isn't terrible. the durabilities are worrisome, but it's not like he's in David Well's shape.. and David Wells lasted forever.

Sabathia
The Yankees are in the market for every top player.    This is no exception.   He is really good, but not sure if he is as great as everyone makes him out to be.   Let's see this year.
