Kei Igawa to start Opening Day....
...for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Go get 'em, Kei!
Thanks to Chad Jennings for the laugh on an otherwise dreary and disappointing day for Yankee fans.

You Bastard!
I read your post and nearly puked up my Honey & Nuts cereal. Then I realized it was for Scranton. His line:

I'm not the only bastard
Mike A. from RAB did the same thing - about 15 minutes after I posted this thread last night.

...and let's
...and let's not forget the obligatory: "He had good movement...blah, blah, blah..." Let's send this one packing back to where he came from! This has been an unmitigated disaster from the start and it serves no one to pretend this guy will ever be useful in any way, shape, or form...
For cryin' out loud: Neither side of the equation here even understands what's expected from the other! If I have to hear one more time about his "special workout" protocol I'm goin' to upchuck all over my Nikes... Correct me if I'm wrong but when you're cashing your paycheck doesn't that make you an employee? If the Yankees have a preference for how he prepares himself to pitch FOR THEM, shouldn't he abide by THOSE RULES...?
Let's write this off for what it was: An ill-advised knee jerk reaction to Bosox & Dice-K and be done with it...Maybe we can still get a credit for the $20 mil rights payment we made and get a barge full of sushi!
(Yet another reason why Cashman needs to exit stage left ASAP!)

For the first time ever...
we agree on an issue. It was an ill-advised knee jerk reaction by Cashman because of RSN signing Matsuzaka.
Here was my commentary on Nov 29th, 2006 - the day ofter the Yanks "won" the bid for Igawa. Ray Charles could have seen this one coming a mile away:
"I really don't get this move at all by Cashman and I'm wondering if he's been taking his medication. $26M for his rights plus the cost of his actual deal is an awful lot of cabbage to fork over for a guy that doesn't appear to be an upgrade over anyone else on the current market. They seemed to want to rid themselves of the Jaret Wright option because he sucks and they would save a few million on top of it. For reasons I supported, Cashman scoffed at the idea of paying the ludicrous salaries and commitment to guys like Lilly, Meche, and Zito, but then turn around and make a ridiculous bid on a guy that has not exactly set the world on fire in Japanese baseball? Doesn't make sense. I simply don't understand it and I'm hoping a deal doesn't get worked out for one reason or another."

This is exactly
This is exactly what troubles me about Brian Cashman -- for every positive there's always been a Kei Igawa. Sorry, but Cashman was at this time "in control" -- he had been "annointed" as The Man. It simply baffles the mind that he took this guy on at such an outrageous expense. I can't even figure out the $20 million in salary let alone the utterly outrageous $26 mil posting fee! (Sorry I actually misspoke in previous post above: It was in fact a $26 mil POSTING fee to Hanshin rather than $20! -- The front office of Hanshin must have thought they'd won Powerball!)
Oh my: I Googled Kei Igawa+fee and actually found a scouting report at "detect-o-vision" dated 11-10-06 that said Igawa had actually LOST his fastball a few years previous! At another site it said the M's were considering Igawa at a $10 mil posting fee!!! Sweet Lou Piniella: If Cashman had just used Google he might have noticed the guy might have already been headed south! Not only that but the Yankees might have avoided paying a $16 million premium?!?!? Cashman talks the $$$ talk about getting younger and cheaper but push comes to shove the guy never flinches at paying the ol' "Yankee Premium"! And don't even get me started on A-Rod: Zero market for the guy at the outrageous amounts he's asking so what do we do: We give him a RAISE!!!
P.S. -- Anaconda: We agree far more than you think!
P.S. #2: Who the ^$%^& is John Amato?!?

Amato
is the founder of PA and also the founder of CrooksAndLiars.com, a politics blog. He's something of a mythical figure, drops in every now and then, says a few pithy things and then vanishes with the full moon.

Not sure about that
We haven't agreed on anything until the subject of Igawa came up. For all his faults, and there are several, it is Cashman who took control of the farm and installed an aggressive approach on the draft and player development. He does deserve a lot of credit for that.
I think that huge shift in philosophy is going to save this franchise from a few years of relative mediocrity and keeps this team a perennial playoff contender while rebuilding the nucleus, especially the rotation, with a lot of young talent.
Let's face it, Yankee fans are spoiled rotten - there's no question about it. And many fans don't appreciate what this team has accomplished in recent years. Do you realize how difficult it is to rebuild your entire rotation and core of the team while contending for a World Championship at the same time? Very few teams have been able to do that.
And before you respond with the "200M+ payroll argument," the Yanks have always cornered the market on talent and cold hard cash - dating back to the glory years when they had free reign to sign any kid they wanted because there was no draft. Mickey Mantle was signed the day of his high school graduation and he wasn't the only one.

200M Payroll
And before you respond with the "200M+ payroll argument
Oh hey Anaconda -- don't worry: I could care less about payroll - ain't MY money! I don't think the Yankees charge any more outrageous prices than anyone else when it comes to a visit to the ballpark and I've ALWAYS respected the fact that Steinbrenner always spent money in pursuit of excellence, so you'll never get an argument from me on that score. That being said, my post about Igawa is that it's indicative of moves made by Cashman that I think just weren't particulary savvy and not befitting a guy who's charged with the responsibility of running the greatest franchise in all of sports. Sorry: Not a Cashman fan nor will I ever be.
Do you realize how difficult it is to rebuild your entire rotation and core of the team while contending for a World Championship at the same time? Very few teams have been able to do that.
Uhh, you know, I'm going to propose a rather radical notion here, Anaconda: I'm not so sure it's a particulary good idea to believe you MUST contend for a World Series every year. There's something to be said for having to take stock of where you are, and where you want to go with your franchise in respect to factors such as age, core strengths, core weaknesses, payroll $$$, and creating a strategy that builds your club for the long haul. The strength of this club over the past decade has been its core: Jeter, Posada, Rivera. We had to go through a fallow period to get that core in place and I fear a determination to be World Series viable each and every year is what gets you the Kei Igawas of this world. BTW: I think Cashman "stumbled" into Cano, Melky, and Wang --

That's what this team is doing...
building a core of young players for years to come. Hughes, Kennedy, and Joba were no accident. They've got a lot of great young talent on the farm right now. Damon Oppenheimer has done an outstanding job as Scouting Director.
I'm ambivalent on Cashman. As long as they continue the current strategy of aggressive spending on drafts and player development, it hardly matters to me whether Cashman returns next season or not.
This team needs to get younger and that's the direction they're going.

Oh yeah...
Hey BTW I was watching ESPN when trying to watch the now aborted Yankee home-opener and spied Andy warming up...? Guess that means for the first time in my recollection a Yankee who went on the DL actually came off of it and played in short order....Good gravy, maybe that's a VERY positive sign for this year!

I saw Andy long tossing
at the Stadium yesterday. He played catch with Mussina for a few minutes, signed some autographs, then went inside.
