You've been DUPED

Star-divide

Tom McDonald of NY1 news told me last night that Hank told him they didn't deal for Santana in the end (even though the Twins final proposal didn't include Hughes, Joba or Kennedy) because they didn't want to add his big contract to the budget. This is a disgrace and a major slap in the face to the fans that made this the richest franchise in sports. But this is the idiotic thinking you get when you have "Clowns in Pinstripes" (Cashman, Hank, and Hal) running the show. They'll pay dearly for this decision for years to come.....Now for the 2008 prediction. It will take key injuries from contending teams for this team to win the World Series. This starting staff isn't good enough to win a championship. Wang is not a number one, not just for the fact he's a one-pitch pitcher but for the fact he's yet to prove he can be a consistently high quality pitcher on the road, especially coming off a season when his ERA was a shade below 5.00 and he got bombed in Cleveland in game one. Hughes has to show a much better fastball than we saw last season, otherwise he won't be a big time pitcher. Kennedy looks like a 4 or a 5, which was David Cone's take on him too. The Moose says he was nicked up a good part of last season and that's why his stuff was so bad. We'll know from the get go if that was the case, because if he's still throwing 85-86 he will continue to get whacked around. As far as the bullpen, let's see if there's a third quality pitcher there. It usually takes a bullpen that is more than two-deep to win a championship. Even in '96, as great as Wetteland and Rivera were, Weathers and Lloyd played major roles in the postseason.

Well...

I think the team is in better shape due to Girardis regimen. that could do well for the long term health of the team for the year. But I agree they should have gotten the Santana deal done if they wanted to compete for a title this year. Its possible Hughes and IPK could be a major factor this year but we know that Santana would have been awesome. Saying that I pick the Yanks to win 88-90 games just short of the playoffs. I hope I am wrong and these pitchers light it up but thats what I believe.

Man

I feel like an idiot now that I have been shown the light. I was fired up for opening day but now I don't think I'll watch. I might not watch any games this season now that Tom McDonald of NY1 and Andyroth have illustrated how foolish I am. If the Village Voice corroborates I may not watch the Yanks again ever.

By the way, doing a sports report for NY1 is like doing a sports report in front of your bathroom mirror. The same amount of people give a shit about what comes out of your mouth.

It's Opening Day bro - can it.

Roddy Piper

Not too many pro wrestlers get quoted on a baseball blog. Funny stuff.

Piper and Ric Fair were my all-time favorite wrestlers as a kid. Ah, the memories.

It really

doesn't get more entertaining than "Piper's Pit". I've seen a few on Youtube recently and they still hold up. Especially this one:

Besides, I think that quote perfectly sums up what a pain in the ass I can be when debating something.

That's hilarious

Damn, I haven't seen that interview in over 20 years and it's still hilarious. That piece exemplifies what I loved about him as a kid. He and Flair were the best interviews/entertainers in the business.

Wow, I feel like I'm 12 years old again.

I met Roddy in a bar in Scottsdale, Arizona back in 1990 or 91. Great guy. He bought a bunch of us beers and then sat around shooting the breeze with us.

Bibbity Bobbity Boo!

Mr Cashman
Andy Roth has his eye on YOU!

Seriously dude, do you even pay attention to what you write?

Let's tick off a few winners from your (thanks for BOLD TYPE) post...

"no team has ever advanced to the World Series..."
No team had come back from being down 3-0 in the ALCS until Boston did it.

So, because no other team has ever done it, means it simply cannot be done? Excellent logic and persuasion there. Bravo.

"They'll pay dearly for this decision for years to come"
Actually of all the top teams in baseball, I believe it has been widely reported that the farm-based turnaround on the pitching front has front offices league-wide drooling for trades. The Yankees are prospect rich for pitching for the first time in over 10 years -- with legitimate prospects, too. So, no, I don't think ONE pitcher that the Yankees did NOT trade for is going to be a decision they will rue for the next decade.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

"You've been DUPED"

I haven't. Please do not ascribe hyped words without any facts to back them up. I'm not duped. In fact, I'm excited to see this team play because we don't have GARBAGE on the mound. We have POTENTIAL.

Didn't have that in the last few years that I recall. No need for Roger to delay retirement this year; no need for scrambling at all trade deadlines to find pitching.

All any fan can ask is that their team IMPROVE year to year. And, have an OPPORTUNITY to make the postseason.

So, I'm not duped. I believe this team is an improvement over last year's team on the mound. And they certainly have the opportunity to make the postseason.

"It will take key injuries from contending teams for this team to win the World Series."

If the only way the Yankees win is by other teams suffering injuries, then count me out. I want my Yankees to win because they were the best team...funnily enough, I think we'll see that THAT will be what it takes for this team to reach, much less win, the World Series.

"Wang is not a number one, not just for the fact he's a one-pitch pitcher"

Well-documented during spring training that he's working on another pitch. Is he an "ace" -- Nope. Does he need to be? Nope. But if he continues to win 16-19 games per year, is he a solid pitcher? (Someday he'll pitch well on the road).

"Hughes has to show a much better fastball than we saw last season, "

How often can you write this line? Well documented that Hughes took 3 months to recover from his hamstring and ankle injuries. His shutdown of Cleveland in relief of Wang pretty much showed his recovery was completed. (He should have started that game). His outings have been inconsistent in spring - but not due to clocking.

"Kennedy looks like a 3 or 4,"
When have the Yankees ever sold him as anything BUT a 3,4,5 pitcher? Never. Oddly, of the trinity, Kennedy had the most consistent spring, and, I would not be surprised if he had the best regular season of the three.

Put him down for 15-6, 3.20. You heard it here first.

"Weathers and Lloyd played major roles in the postseason"
Jeff Nelson, I would argue played a larger role in '96 than David Weathers. G. Lloyd had the wetdream of a postseason.

Oddly it was the development (cohesion) of Stanton, Nelson, Mendoza and Rivera that would lock down games from the 7th inning on. Looks like more than a two-deep bullpen there.

As to this season's bullpen -- it is improved. It is more than two deep. And it has "alternatives" waiting in the wings in Scranton (I'm looking at you Patterson!!!)

I'm happy as a Yankee fan that they did not take the Twins first offer, second offer, third offer, or their ding dong last minute offer. Let these kids earn the right to represent the Yankees; they deserve.

What's the worst that can happen? We lose a few ballgames? Meh. I can deal with that.

As to the money issue -- you're not thinking down the road: by freeing up cash next season the team has flexibility to make roster decisions.

And, as to the money issue: I think we've all seen what happens when high-priced free agents come to NY for $100 million or more and don't produce results. Now, we have kids who WANT to be Yankees. Who WANT to win a championship.

Anything said now is pure conjecture and guesswork -- but I'll show you the path to the AL East title:

It lies in May-July; over the course of almost 80 games, the team is home for 50 of them. A decent April, hot streaks in May/June/July and average in August/September (that's my prediction).

Call it, 94-68. The Yankees win the AL East by 2 over Boston, which storms back in a reversal of fortune to nearly catch the Yankees at the finish with a 16-2 stretch run record. Sadly, the 2 losses are to the Yankees.

See...I'm not duped. Maybe delusional. But not duped.

Kennedy would be the unanimous ROY

if he comes close to your bold prediction of 15-6, 3.20 ERA.

My outlook on him this season isn't quite so rosy, but I do think he's better than the naysayers give him credit for.

by anaconda on Apr 1, 2008 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Hang on, big boy

Kennedy is my man. I actually like him long-term better than Hughes. I know that opens me up to alot of criticism, but IPK may well turn out to be the next Greg Maddux. I love his head, his makeup ... dang, that makes me sound gay--not that there's anything wrong with that. I digress. Seriously, IPK has the moxie to win big on the MLB level. It may take a couple of seasons for him, but if the braintrust has patience, they will be rewarded. Trust me.

We don't disagree

As I said, I think he's better than a lot of naysayers do. But 15-6, 3.20 ERA in 2008 is an extremely tall order.

Living in the Chicagoland area all my life and unable to watch many Yankee games throughout the 1980s, I basically grew up watching Cubs games and Greg Maddux early in his career. There are several similarities. But even Maddux got knocked around pretty good back then.

That said, the one thing that really favors Kennedy in this comparison is that he's on a far better team. He's going to be able to overcome obstacles that Maddux couldn't because of the tremendous run support he's going to get.

Not ripping Kennedy at all. I think he'll do a pretty good job this season.

Love that improved bullpen

Especially Farnsworth and Hawkins. Let's see if Girardi has the balls or is smart enough to use Ohlendorf or Albaladejo ahead of these two bums. Once Pettite comes off the DL they're supposed to send Albaladejo down. Let's see how the great Cash handles this one.

by andyroth on Apr 4, 2008 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No chance

He logs 15-6 and a 3.20. We all just need look at the source. Barring injury, I see him cracking double figures, maybe 10, 12 wins, but your point is well taken. Finite control guys like Maddux, Glavine, Moyer pitch to contact, and as a result surrender low era's. If IPK can register 4.50 I'll have a tingle running up my leg.

by Ronster22 on Apr 1, 2008 9:45 AM EDT reply actions

Control doesn't always mean contact

Vintage Maddux kept his K/9 around 7.
PECOTA's 50 percentile forecast for IPK has a K/9 of 6.9. That forecast has some issues in it (mainly the IP), but they're the most reliable program out there.

Coming up through the system IPK had 72K in 63 IP at A, 57 in 48.2 at AA, 34 in 34.2 at AAA, and 15K in 19 at MLB. He might decide to pitch to contact so he can be more efficient , but for the moment he looks like a strikeout pitcher to me.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Apr 1, 2008 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

You are right ... sort of ...

Maddux is the example I chose because so much of IPK reminds me of him--especially between the ears. The difference that I can see between the two (Maddux's 350 wins notwithstanding), is the fact that Maddux had several put you away pitches in his prime. At this point IPK doesn't have that. I probably could have said it better but I didn't have enough caffiene coursing through my veins.

Given time, I think IPK may develop into more of a strikeout pitcher, but frankly I don't see him ever matching Maddux on that stage.

One pitcher I'm surprised doesn't strikeout more batters is Wang. He's got 95mph stuff, but no true "out" pitch. I really believe that hurts him and keeps his era inflated. I'm hoping with the addition of Eiland, we'll see Wang feature his trademark hard sinker, augmenting it with a nifty tight slider, or a cutter that runs away from enemy bats.
