I think
they took Bruney instead because he's been in the majors longer, came to camp sporting a new look and (supposedly) a new attitude. I think Joe. G. thinks it's only right to give him a go-round though that is pure speculation. I don't expect all of these guys to last in the bullpen and I believe that Scottie will be called up the minute someone falters.
We all agreed that Girardi had tough decisions to make and except for the exclusion of Patterson, I think he made the right ones. I would like two more guys, Patterson and Britton, to get up here during the season but it's nice to know they're there if we need them. It could all work out yet.
I'm just happy Igawa and Rasner are not on the list.

In a word
"experience" at the ML level...I would agree with the assumption that bxgirl makes -- Bruney over Patterson because Bruney has been at the ML and Patterson has not.
Of all the pitchers in ST (relievers, anyway), Patterson absolutely "earned" the right in my mind to make the team; however, with the triumvirate of young starters, having experienced relievers backing them up may have been the thinking of the day.
It's all conjecture of course, but I expect we'll see Patterson this season. He deserves it.
All in all, it's hard to fault the pen selections. No Rasner, No Igawa...those were the best decisions made.

I absolutely agree
it's all about what's on the back of the baseball card.
Patterson spent all of 2006 and all but one game of 2007 in AA. There must be something the Yanks don't like about his pitches, his mechanics, something that means he has to earn every inch. Hopefully he gets a shot at some point- he's on the 40 man now, so he should be on the short list of call-ups (the other options include, Chase Wright, Chris Britton, Jeff Marquez, Steve White, Jose Veras and Edwar).
I'd pick Britton then Patterson from that group- but they sent Britton down several days ago.

Smart decision
I like Patterson as well. What's not to like. I don't think he gave up a run. My thoughts are similar to jscape and suspect his move to SWB is for seasoning, and to make certain he's the real deal. When I played, we had a guy who threw 11 innings of no-hit, no run baseball one spring. He was absolutely lights out. While everyone raved, no one bothered to notice that he'd been very mediocre his previous season. He was so dominating that he broke with the club. His first MLB game lasted .1 inning in which he gave up three hits, a walk and a homer. He was never seen again.
Patterson may have the goods, but he's going to have to prove it in SWB where the stakes aren't quite so high. I suspect we'll see him as early as May/June if he continues to dominate.

Not only experience
But I think the fact that Bruney only has one minor league option left had something to do with that decision as well.
It just goes to show you that players who can throw the ball 95+ MPH with regularity are given every chance in the world to succeed at the major league level - even if they haven't always deserved it.
That's not to take anything away from Bruney's ST (and losing 20 LBS over the offseason), but it's just a matter of time before the real Bruney resurfaces and walks the ballpark as his track record clearly shows.
I don't think losing weight is going to change the inevitable, but I hope I'm wrong.

I don't think so either
I think the old Bruney will resurface and I think Girardi thinks so too. I think they just want Bruney to dig his own hole and let him toss himself into it. I would LOVE to see a new and improved Bruney but I have doubts that is what we're going to see. I'd be more than happy to be wrong.

Patterson
I loved him. Funky delivery and all. By mid season we might see him yet...

Not to mention
It's always good to have somebody "new" to throw at hitters in mid season. A little unfamiliarity can go a long way (see: Small, Aaron)
