PA Book Club?

Are we reading Summer of '49 or no?

We were voting and discussing and then nothing.

The minimum for a PA diary is 300 characters but I can't think of anything else to say.

Sorry
I thought the vote was unanimous by roll call. We'll be discussing Summer of '49 on the 30th.

The La's
Weren't they a band in the mid-to-late 90s?

Anyway, the book is great. I'll be in New Jersey all next week with the family--taking a break from the political realm. Hope to take in the Statue of Liberty, Central Park...

Anyone have any cool ideas and places to go with three kids (7, 9, 12)?

I'm a big dork
But I still love going to the Museum of Natural History to see the dinosaur skeletons. I could spend a full day in there.

Yeah
Same with the (parts of) the Met. Looking at only paintings and sculptures might get boring eventually (as they did when I was younger), but the Egyptian part is always worth looking at. Another place I almost feel ashamed mentioning is Madame Toussaude's Wax Museum in Times Square. Good for anyone to go through once, and it might blow the minds of younger kids. Bring a camera though, because the kids will want pictures with all the wax Yankees.

The Met
has become a zoo. I remember when it seemed like an actual museum.  Now it's like the great unwashed (or loud unwashed) have taken over.

Baseball cards at the Met?
Does the Met still have those old baseball cards up?  Just around the corner from the Temple of Dendur (sp?).  By the American crafty stuff, Lloyd Wright et al.

I still love that place
it seems like when I was in grade school we went there every year on a field trip.  It has not changed at all.  I love that place.

I had friends visit a few months ago with 3 kids and I told them that it would take them a few hours.  I guess I fly through there since I know it so well.  They were there the whole day.

Times Square is a circus but kids like ESPN Zone and the wax museum.  There is a ferris wheel inside the Times Square Toys R Us and if you go to the Lego section there is a lego Empire State and Chrysler Building that is pretty cool.  They used to have a roaring dinosaur right near there (life size) but I haven't been in there in a couple of years so I can't vouch that he is still there but kids like that place.

The Cloisters "might" be fun...that was another field trip place.  I think all the schools in NYC go to the same 3 places for all field trips (statute of liberty being the other one).

If you want to do high sightseeing I would go Top of the Rock over the Empire State.  NBC tours might be fun (I've never been).

And go to FAO Schwartz.  It's not what it used to be but it's kinda fun if you've never been.  Their "soda counter" is exceedingly overpriced but you can get a NY eggcream there if you really need one.  You can also get one at any Juniors.  There is a new one near the Marriott Marquis and one in Grand Central.

I don't know if they would enjoy a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.  Can be fun/scary but you can have Brooklyn pizza (the real deal) and take the subway back.

If I think of anything else, I will let you know!

I've heard...
that this is pretty cool. My nephew (he's 7) and his father went and it was hard to figure out who had a better time.

oh and hey Ronster
I can't be responsible for ruining our love affair when you're dragging 3 kids around Manhattan.  Kills the whole concept.  :)  Oh well, we shared a moment.  We'll always have froth ;).

Do they like pizza?
If it's not too cold why not try Coney Island and Totonno's, the world's greatest pizza?

by costa on Mar 19, 2008 3:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Already ..
Have Totonno's penciled in. I really appreciate all the help. My guys are up for anything and really enjoy puttering around the city. I'm thinking a museum--maybe even the broadcast museum.

Thanks guys.

Cool
I'm almost finished with the book (MUCH better read than the Ty/Babe book), so I'll start reading more slowly. Maybe read each sentence twice? Don't want to forget it all by the 30th.
