Out of Options

MLBTR just took a lot of the fun out of Spring Training for me.

Both Wilson Betemit and Sean Henn are out of options, meaning they'd have to clear waivers before they could be sent down. I don't think either of them could clear, and hopefully they'll both shine in ST so that it won't matter either way.

So if they don't make the team
they're gone? Is it being considered sent down if they don't make the team in the first place or does it mean we can't assign them to the big club and then send them down later?

I see Wilson B either in the mess for 1st base or as the backup infielder so I think he makes the club either way. Sean Henn... I am not so sure about.

I think you're right Ed
WB makes the team.  Henn does not.  Hopefully he does well enoug in ST that we can trade him for somebody or something instead of waiving him.

Waivers
They have to clear waivers before they can accept assignment to AAA at any time. That means any team can take them from us (I believe for a fee).

I think you're both right
Betemit will be very useful; no question about it.  I don't think anyone will cry tears over Henn's almost inevitable release.

Agreed, unless ....
Henn gets dumped somewhere and he wins 17 games. That would suck, and would cause many to cry real tears.

I know everyone here loves Betemit, and that he's been somewhat of an enigma since breaking onto the scene with the Braves. Last season, while he did show flashes of power, and a good glove, he only hit .220-something.

Sure he's young, but is he the best option as a roll player? I'm really just asking to get some additional thoughts on him.

Well if Gonzalez
shows that he can hit as well as WB I think the scouting reports say he would be a better option because of his incredible fielding.

We have a luxury when we are discussing backup players because we don't really need pinch hitters in the Yankees. We have good hitters at every position and no huge holes in the lineup. For that reason I would value defense more than offense when selecting backups.

So for the backup infielder job I might be more prone to selecting Albert Gonzalez over Wilson Betemit.

On the other hand if we are talkign about an everyday player, or even a platoon player he better be able to hit at least a little. Thats why I think Betemit would be the better option for 1st base because he has a decent balance of fielding and hitting. Of course the best case senerio for me is that Jason Giambi is in good enough shape to play the position we signed him for...

That would be a stretch...
No pun intended on that one. Can you imagine if the Giambino stretched? Dear God, grab the women and children and cover their eyes.

Agreed that would be the best option. I like Gonzalez. Just don't know that he can hit better than .229
