Vladimir Guerrero
I was doing some research and correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that Vladimir Guerrero's contract with the Angels is up after next season. Anyone have any thoughts on the possibilities of where Vlad will go after the 2009 season? Will he stay in Los Angeles or could you see teams like the Yankees or Red Sox going after him?
I realize he's on the older side, but I wonder if he would be any help for the Yankees? What do you guys think?

Pass
He’ll be 34 at the beginning of his next contract, and his fielding skills are dwindling. He’s still a great hitter who swats at everything his bat can reach, but he’s also showing some signs of offensive decline. To us, he’d mostly be a DH, so it wouldn’t be worth committing a huge contract to him. I’m sure he’ll either stay as LA’s DH or go somewhere else where they need a DH and part-time RF. The Angels are already gradually shifting him out of RF in favor of younger and better defensive OFs, which they’re stocked with.
Also, if you want a list of all the potential free agents in 2010 (barring extensions, options being picked up, players being non-tendered, etc.), go here.

Victor Martinez looks real nice hanging out there in 2010.

He's also starting to play a lot of 1B and DH
And he’ll start the 2010 season at age 31, and he had a real off year offensively in 2008, so people are wondering if he’ll be able to keep up his monster production of past seasons. So he wouldn’t really be a fit for us. We need a true, young catcher. Now, if Jorge has another bad year this year while VMart rebounds, and we could sign him to a 4- or 5-year deal for no more than $12 million per so he can overlap the Jorge and Jesus Montero eras, maybe.

Martinez
2010 is an option year for V-Mart. If he has a good year the option will certainly be exercized. If a bad year, then will the Yankees still want him even if the option is declined? If he contiues to be the player he’s usually been, Yanks fans can forget about him till 2011.

Vlad and V-Mart
I wouldn’t want Vlad. He’s old, has had some injury-problems, and doesn’t really fit in. Not when Matt Holliday, and possibly Carl Crawford are out there. Younger options. Vlad will probably go to another team with money, but not Ca$hman’s noggin. Mets? I hope not the Red Sox, as he’s still a dangerous hitter and Ortiz/Guerrero is a frightening combo.
I’m not sure the yankees should get V-Mart either. He’s 30 now, and will be 32 by 2011. A 4-5 year deal will take him to 37. I doubt he’ll age as well as Jorge, as he’s already the same problems Posada is now with injuries, not-so-stellar defense, and talk of a move to 1B. They do have similar skillsets, though, it’s a blessing and a curse. Rather wait for a young guy to come up. Of Higashioka, Montero, Romine, and Cervelli, at least one has to turn okay?
