Who's our no. 2 starter?

We know CC Sabathia will be our number one starter in 2009, but with the signing of Burnett, who becomes the number two?

I say Burnett. Assuming Joba is the fourth starter right now (to limit his innings), it would be best to break up two similar style pitchers (Burnett and Joba) in the rotation. Both are right-handed power pitchers, primarily utilizing a devastating breaking ball as their out-pitch. You don't want the opposition to see that in consecutive games, so putting Wang between them (with his contact/ground-ball repertoire) would probably benefit Joba more than if he pitched after Burnett.

What's your say?

(Of course if Pettitte returns, Joba probably gets pushed to the five spot, rendering this point moot...)

number 2

I know the Yankees are giving AJ a load of money, but you gotta stay loyal to Wanger. Loyality still should mean something in sports now adays. Isn’t that why Cashman went to Texas to talk to Andy face to face. awful

Depends

If we sign Pettitte, our rotation should be Sabathia-Wang-Burnett-Pettitte-Chamberlain. If we don’t sign Pettitte and Hughes pr Kennedy joins the rotation out of spring training, it should be Sabathia-Burnett-Wang-Chamberlain-Hughes/Kennedy. If Aceves joins the rotation, he should be the fourth starter, and put Chamberlain in the fifth spot to stretch out his innings over more of the season.

so in this scenario-

Joba pitches two innings?

unless something crazy happens, Joba stays in the rotation.

did Joba's 7-inning

shutout in Boston last year do nothing to convince you he should be a starter?

what’s more valuable, 80 innings or 200? it’s as simple as that. the reason for success of the 96-2001 Yankees was not the above average bullpen, but the incredible starting rotation, which gave a lead to that bullpen nearly every game.

not as much

as hughes no hitter in texas did until he got hurt 2 yrs ago.. I still like Hughes in the rotation and Joba in the pen… sign pettite as the 5

and you

cant be serious that our bullpen wasnt incredible 96-01.

by Soriano NY 12 on Dec 16, 2008 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

The bullpen

was incredible because we had awesome starters giving them the ball with a lead all the time. You’re putting the cart before the horse dude.

by CasanovaWong on Dec 16, 2008 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

we

had incredible hitters to get us a lead. and incredible bullpen to hold it. dont get me wrong i think the starters were amazing however you are giving them too much credit.

it was the whole team. hitters, bullpen, defense and starters. Which is why i support he fact that Joba should be in the pen, to bolster that aspect of the team, we already have a great rotation with or without him, and we can still fill his spot on the FA market or within the organization.

Plus, Mo has been the single handed most important part of the Yankee dynasty, and who better but Joba to step into his shoes in the future.

by Soriano NY 12 on Dec 16, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

We already have an incredible pen

It was great last year without Joba, and it’ll be even better this year. We have plenty of good arms to put in the pen. Not all of them are able to be starters as good as Joba. Until Joba shows he just can’t go 200 innings, which we won’t know for a few years (but I’m pretty confident he could be a durable Roger Clemens-type ace), he should be in the rotation.

The Regulaer Season v.s. Post Season

the point of the regular season is to win games. Wang has deffinitly proven he can wn games. hes won 8 games in less than half a season last year, and he lead the AL in wins in 06+07, with 37 wins. I say plug him into the second hole, make it CC,Wang,Aj,Andy,Joba. it just breaks every1 up better. u have power(cc),finesse(Wang)power(AJ)Finesse(Andy),power(Joba).

the rotation usually changes over the course of a full season, but in the playoffs its all about dominating the other team with overpowering stuff. so if possible the rotation in the postseason should be, CC,Aj,Joba,Wang. Andy in the pen as a long man.

If we get Pettitte...

…there would be no reason to not start him in a 7-game postseason series. The reason we’d re-sign him is that he’s always a reliable 200IP+ man during the regular season, giving regular quality starts (until this past season), and that he’s always been at his best in big games, especially in October. He outpitched Sabathia in the 2007 ALDS, giving up 0 ER to CC’s 1 in the infamous bug game in Cleveland.

Umm...

That was actually Fausto Carmona in the infamous bug game. important distinction.

by rory_sayer on Dec 16, 2008 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

Oh yeah

You’re right. Still, Carmona had a dominant 19-win season. In some ways, he was even better than Sabathia, though he returned back to Earth this season.

Your No, 2 starter is supposed to be

your second best pitcher regardless of his style compared to any other starter. I guess Drysdale shouldn’t have followed Koufax since they were both power pitchers.

thanks...

… for not answering the question i posed.

by Travis G on Dec 15, 2008 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

guess not

he can’t dominate as much as Burnett and is coming off a serious injury.

they’re FIPs the last 3 years are nearly identical, with Burnett having higher K and BB rates. K rate is one of the best indicators of future success. and Burnett, despite his and Wang’s MOs, has pitched more innings the last 3 years.

by Travis G on Dec 16, 2008 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Burnett has dominated his

way to one 18-game season with a 4.07 ERA in his walk year and those impressive 12 win seasons, while Wang only won 19 two straight seasons.

by RealityCheck09 on Dec 16, 2008 6:11 PM EST up reply actions

please

don’t ever, ever use a pitcher’s w-l record to indicate his quality. a SP is probably 40-45% responsible for the outcome of a game. the offense, bullpen and defense have quite a bit to say.

Wang

When I put together my AAU staffs, I look for several things—lefties vs. righties, 3/4 throwers to sidearm, to over-the-top, hard throwers vs. soft, fastballs away vs. fastballs in. My goal in looking at these different things is to present two radically different pitchers from game to game.

CC is obviously the number one. He’s big. He’s a lefty. So we essentially have a clean slate for the number two. However, I’d slide Wang into the 2 slot. He’s a radically different pitcher than CC—relying more on contact. For the three slot I’d pencil in Burnett for no other reason that he’d matchup favorably to just about any other team’s number 3. Arguably a number 1, Burnett will benefit from not being the staff ace and will likely relish in the 3 slot—not feeling the pressure of NY as much and facing off against lesser talent.

Oh maybe I misunderstood the question.

Burnett should be the two

The reason, is because you need to split up Burnett and Joba in the rotation, and not specifically because of their style, but because of their potential affect on the bullpen. You can feel comfortable that the bullpen will have a short night when Sabathia and Wang are on the mound, but you can’t feel so secure with Chamberlain and Burnett. Both are injury prone, and they don’t go as deep into games. If they both happen to be injured, then you certainly don’t want their replacements pitching in back to back games, either. Of course, if the Yankees do sign Pettitte, it changes everything for me. In that case, I would put Joba fifth, Burnett third, and move Wang into the number two slot. This would keep Joba and Burnett split up, and would be remaining loyal to Wang, as well as keeping the two groundball pitchers, in Wang and Pettitte split up.

by rory_sayer on Dec 16, 2008 9:12 PM EST reply actions

good point

and no doubt, if Pettitte returns, Joba goes to #5, Wang to #2. i’m hoping…
