Pat Burrell

Now that the Phillies aquired Raul Ibanez, Pat Burrell will not return to the Phillies.

Is there any chance the Yankees turn around, and instead of signing Manny for tons of money, they sign Burrell to play some OF/DH.

Here was his stat line from last season(.250-33-86-74) also avged 108 walks in the last 2 seasons. Then agian, the struck out 136 times last season...

They guy isn't a great defender either.

Yes except

Burrell isn’t someone you want with the glove on, an Matsui isn’t either (he’s not as bad as Burrell but his knee is breaking down) if you do this, your going to have a epicly bad OF with some combo of Burrell / Matsui / Damon /Nady out there.

While Hitting >>> defending, this is one OF I’m not willing to do unless the LF hits like Babe Ruth.

We don't need any more corner outfielders

End of story.

actually

we do, but he has to be able to catch the ball at a mildly acceptable rate on top of being a above average hitter to be worth it.

We have one of those guys, unfortunately we seem to be inclined to put in at first.

Our corner OFs

Matsui, Damon, Nady, and Swisher. Matsui will spend almost all his time at DH, and Swisher at 1B, so Damon will play mostly in LF and Nady in RF. We don’t need another corner OF who will expect to start unless we trade one of these players.

Burrrrr on Burrell

I’m cold to the idea of Burrell. Sure he’s got the “Pat the Bat” tag from college, but he’s really a .260-.270 hitter, tops who strikes out far too much given his talent. As mentioned earlier, he’s also a poor defender—perhaps even worse than Matsui.

I’m one who doesn’t think we need to field an all-star team to win. Burrell certainly isn’t a superstar, but he’d be paid like one. Our return on investment with a guy like him may lead us to Capitol Hill in search of a bailout … Take a pass on “Pat the Bat”.
