Pavano coming back??

I read the worst news of the off-season today so far in my mind concerning our beloved Yankees.  I read that Cashman is leaving the door open concerning the possiblity of bringing Pavano back to fill the back end fo the rotation out.  I think this shows the utter idiocy of Cashman and his certain ineptness to turn this team around.  We wasted 40 MILLION dollars on Pavano over the last 4 years with seemingly nothing in return.  Not only did Pavano suck as a player, but from what I've read he was looked down upon in the clubhouse and many players thought he nursed his injuries way too much.  I'm interested in your reaction to this "possibility".

Hold on ...

If we can’t land any of the top FA pitchers, what other recourse does Cashman have—give two starting slots to Hughes and Kennedy and use Igawa as a swing guy? C’mon, man, there simply aren’t many quality arms out there, and despite not having the arm strength, Pavano didn’t pitch poorly.

Believe me, I wish we never saw the guy again, either. But the truth is, he might be our best option for 2009. And frankly, if it comes down to Hughes, Kennedy, or Pavano … based on what I’ve seen in 2008, my choice is Pavano.

Sad

But true

Peavy adds Yankees to his list

I just heard this on SportsCenter, Jake Peavy will accept a trade to NY. I don’t know what if anything will come of this, but I think he’s definately a viable option to CC and Burnett. This is good news.

Pavano over hughes???

My friend Ronster, please re-consider your point. Hughes is still very young and he had some injury issues last year but he’s still part of the future of the Yankees. Pavano is an injury waiting to happen and the worst free agent signing in the history of the Yankees in my humble opinion. I still believe Hughes can be a middle of the rotation starter but he needs to pick up the slack.

My knock on Hughes has been

his ball lacks movement. I believe mechanically it can be fixed (by raising his elbow), but I’m not seeing any real improvement—even after two years, and that concerns me. Pavano comes cheap. If he works hard, I’ll cheer for him.

PAVANO PITCHED WELL

…at the end of the season. If he was cheap….why not? We have this image in our mind of everyone snapping towels at pavano’s butt in the clubhouse. Let’s be real. If the guy comes back in and works hard like it looks like he was doing, and gets results, all will be forgiven.

Its about having a Plan C, Plan D, Plan E, etc.

I’m pretty confident our 2009 rotation will look something like:

1 – Free agent pitcher – CC Sabatthia, AJ Burnett, or Derek Lowe
2 – Chien Ming Wang
3 – pick one – Andy Pettitte or Mike Mussina
4 – Joba Chamberlain
5 – everyone else

Hughes, Kennedy, Giese, and Aceves will compete for the #5 spot, and if Pavano is willing to sign a team friendly contract to compete as well, I’m fine with that. Having a live arm/warm body like Pavano around just pushes guys like Darrell Rasner and Sidney Ponson further down on the depth chart, which is exactly what we want to see.

all good points but.....

I just think keeping Pavano around is bad charma and bad for the team chemistry. Let him go back to the NL where he might actually be decent again.

Not a good enough plan for October ...

Plan A is obviously landing CC and Burnett
Plan B is landing CC or Burnett
Plan C is trading for and signing Peavy
Plan D is grabbing an innings eater in decline out of desperation—including Pavano
Plan E is canceling my MLB package in March because the Yankees are talking about Igawa making the rotation.

Cashman isn't stupid

and he knows that making it the postseason isn’t about who brings in the sexiest names during December.

Plan A is resigning one of Mike Mussina or Andy Pettitte for 2009.
Plan B is to sign CC Sabatthia.

Mark my words, if the Yankees sign AJ Burnett, we will be bashing him no this board in no time at all. The repuation is NOT warranted.

burnett is damaged goods

he’s all about the next big contract if you ask me and the yankees need to stay far away from him.

He's a Yankee killer

That’s what makes him attractive. He’s a risk and will come at a steep price. If we can’t land a frontline starter either through FA or by trade, Burnett will be targeted.

Pavano

If he was any kind of man, he’d come back at a huge discount. Sign a 1 year deal for 2 million dollars. Use the season to show if he has anything in the tank. Pitch for a contract while earning some of the money he stole from New York.

No GM in his right mind would sign this guy to any kind of multi year deal

contrary to popular belief

Pavano did NOT pitch well this year: 5.77 ERA, 34.3 ip, 41 h, 10 bb, 15 k.

thank you trav g

I think the numbers once again alleviate any misconceptions. Most people think Pavano was decent just because he actually pitched some this year….. He’s not what the Yankees need at this point.

Injuries ...

I’m not a Pavano apologist. In fact, I kinda’ hate the guy. However, he pitched last season without arm strength, and without having pitched in the MLB for what—two years. The numbers may not look that good, but given the circumstances, he wasn’t as bad as it suggests.

Carl Pavano

He shouldn’t come back. He just signed thaqt 40 Million dollar contract, made sure it was garunteed and then just sucked. I don’t see him comeing back. He is kind of like Shawn Chacon, except without the actual helping the team part.
